Religious Education Congress +Archdiocese of Los Angeles + February 11-13, 1977 in Appreciation RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS +ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES + FEBRUARY 11-13, 1977 IN APPRECIATION ... •.. to the hundreds of dedicated women and men who lend their hands and hearts and thousands of volunteer working hours - both before and during Congress - to help make this event a success ... AND IN REMEMBRANCE ... ... To Felix and Dorothy Giroux, two volunteers who truly knew the meaning of following Christ. They spent myriads of hours at many tasks, but especially processing Congress registration forms - a job they perfected. Their inner joy and Christian love spread to all who knew them. Both Dorothy and Felix died this past year. We salute them, love them, and miss them. But we know they are with us in spirit. May their rewards in heaven be great, for their devotion to God's work here on earth. 1 contents ASSEMBLIES, GENERAL .......•........... 12 EXHIBITORS (LISTING) ..•............... 14 FOOD .......•.......................... 11 HOSPITALITY ROOM INFORMATION .......... 10 INFORMATION •....•.....•........•••....• 8 LITURGIES F.tvi_da.y. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • . • • • • • • • • • • 2 8 Sa.tuJtda..y • ••••••••••••••••••••.••••• 28 Su.nda.y. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • . • • • • . 2 9 MAPS Convention Ce.n-teJt . •••••.•..••..••.•. 5 Exhibito~ Booth6 .................. 13 MESSAGE CENTER .......•.......•...•..... 9 MUSICIANS .••................•...•..... 27 TAPING INFORMATION .................... 10 WORKSHOPS F.ll..i_da.y • •.•••••.••••••••••••••••••. • 18 Sa.tu!tday. 21 Sun.da.y . 2 4 PLEASE WEAR YOUR IDENTIFICATION BADGE AT ALL TIMES DURING THE CONGRESS! 2 HIS EMINENCE. CARDINAL TIMOTHY MANNING Archbishop of Los Angeles ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES 1531 WEST NINTH STREET LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90015 388-8101 February 11th, 1977 Dear friends: The annual Religious Education Congress is an event dear to the heart. It is a time of spiritual significance: laity and priests and religious - the Church itself - coming to gether to share in learning pro~esses, more fervent prayer experiences, and that indescribable inner peace and joy wherein we are called to dwell by the Spirit of the Lord. It is an all too brief three days in which to refresh the soul before returning to our homes, our offices, our classrooms. It is a moment of time, focusing on a love so great that we are awed by its beauty and humbled by its message. It is a time when dedicated people renew their determination to pursue Jesus' command, "COME, FOLLOW ME". Our congratulations and prayerful blessings to all those whose work has made this Congress possible, and to all the delegates who attend. SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 Fr John E Boll, Diocesan Archivist No 50 CARDINAL JAMES FRANCIS McINTYRE, THE WEST’S FIRST CARDINAL ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT Printed in the January 22, 1970 issue of the Catholic Herald Photo by Corbis.com Cardinal James McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, archbishop of Los Angeles since 1948, who is known as the archconservative of the American hierarchy, has retired according to an announcement made by the Vatican on Wednesday. Pope Paul VI accepted the resignation of the 83 year-old cardinal for reasons of age. The cardinal had served his archdiocese for eight years longer than the recommended retirement age of 75 which had been fixed by Pope Paul VI. Vatican sources announced that automatically succeeding Cardinal McIntyre as archbishop of Los Angeles, one of the largest jurisdictions in the United States, is Archbishop Timothy Manning, formerly bishop of Fresno and now coadjutor bishop in Los Angeles with the right of succession. Frequently involved in headline making disputes with clergy and religious of a liberal bent, the cardinal is praised by Catholics of many viewpoints for his consistent endeavors to raise the standard of Catholic education in his archdiocese. A native of New York, Cardinal McIntyre, who will remain a member of the College of Cardinals, will be 84 on June 25. He was named archbishop of Los Angeles in 1948 and was made a cardinal by Pope Pius XII in 1953. Cardinal McIntyre has been one of the leading conservatives in the American church, a stance which often led to controversy with liberal elements of his archdiocese.

He knows me by my name! I am not just one out of a million, I am unique and special to Him.” Throughout her life this was the vision and conviction that she wanted to convey to others. It is our hope that you will take time to read and pray with these simple yet profound insights from Servant of God Sister Ida Peterfy. As you do so, may God touch your heart as He did hers, to realize that God loves you personally and intimately. He is inviting you to a deeper friendship and relationship with Him.
