PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA charlie parker with strings series autumn in new york (1952) Background: When Billie Holiday signed a new recording contract with Decca Records in 1944, she told producer Milt Gabler she wanted to record with strings. Anxious to establish Holiday as a pop singer, Gabler hired six string players for her fi rst session, and the fi rst song recorded was Lover Man, one of her biggest hits. Several years later, when Charlie Parker signed with impresario/manager Norman Granz’ label Clef, Parker asked for strings as well. Granz was obviously keeping costs down, as only fi ve string players were hired for the fi rst session (1949), but these were the very top New York session players; some were members of the NBC symphony conducted by Arturo Toscanini. As much as he’d dreamed of playing with strings, report- edly Parker walked out of a few sessions without playing a note (the number has never been authenticated). -

Our Fall 2011 Catalog Brings Exciting News for Jazz History Fans! We are especially pleased to announce the publication of some of the 20th Century’s most important jazz arrangements. Included at the top of the list of our new releases is the complete set of Oliver Nelson arrangements from the 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth. This album is widely considered to be one of the most infl uential in the history of jazz. The charts are also available individually. We are also excited to announce the release of the complete arrangements from Stan Getz’s Focus Suite (string arrangements by Eddie Sauter), Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite, and Benny Carter’s Central City Sketches. All of these are important, groundbreaking works that would make wonderful and challenging concert pieces. In addition, we have also added a new Tadd Dameron series. Tadd Dameron was one of the most original, yet unsung, innovators in jazz composing. In our Frank Sinatra series we have several new releases including arrangements from Nelson Riddle, Billy May, and Billy Byers. We have also added new titles to our Supersax, Terry Gibbs Dream Band, Gil Evans, Mary Lou Williams, and Benny Carter series. While we value our role in keeping jazz history alive, you, the band director or musician, are the most important person. By performing historic jazz music you expose students and concert-goers to this timeless music and thereby ensure that the past is not forgotten.
