Sections are given(1) to the extension of skills of auditory and listening and observing,(3) to the extension of literary appreciation and reading experiences, and(4) to speech in action, written expression, and learning about language. An appendix provides background information in language and literature, recommended books for grades five and six, recommendedpoems for grades five and six, a basic list in spelling, sounds of English,and selected teacher references. FOREWORD Since language is the medium for the development and communication of ideas, understanding the nature of language and acquiring skill in its daily use are basic to the individual's ability to live in this expanding world. A cumulative sequential program in language arts has been developed for pupils in all grades prekindergarten through twelve. The Handbook for Language Arts: Grades Five and Six is the third in a series of publications directed to teachers and supervisors in elementary schools. (The Handbook for Language Arts:Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grades One and Two and The Handbook for Language Arts:Grades Three and Four are now in the schools.) The material in the present publication reflects new developments in the language arts field and provides the teacher with specific suggestions for organizingeffectivelearning experiences.Instructionto sharpenbasic reading skills and to guide pupils in using reading as a tool for critical thinkingisamajor objective. Through a comprehensive program in literature, pupils discover the distant past and extend their understanding of the present. In writing, they are encouraged to express their reactions and to experiment with creative uses of language. Provision is also made for pupils to participate in the oral program El nd to enjoy the satisfaction of having their ideas worthy of discussion. This varied exposure, which gives pupils fresh insights into human behavior, helps them to understand and accept themselves and others, both within and outside of the group with which they identify. Teachers and supervisors in every district and in a variety of classroom situations have contributed to the bulletin. It encourages teachers and pupils to add their own creative approaches and activities in implementing the language arts program in grades five and six. These curriculum bulletins were developed under the general supervision of Seelig Lester, Deputy Superintendent of Schools. David A. Abramson, Acting Director of the Bureau of Curriculum Development, directed the work of staff members and consultants involved with the publication. Marguerite T. Driscoll, Language Arts Curriculum Specialist, Bureau of Curriculum Development, was chairman of the Materials Production Committee and principal researcher. She wrote materials and reviewed and edited the sections written by staff personnel: Etta S. Ress, Helen Shubik, Sibyl Wolfe. Edna Bernstein, librarian of the Bureau of Curriculum Development, reviewed the section on literature and checked the bibliography. The Bureau of English, Jerome Carlin, Director, collaborated in the development of this publication. Rosemary E. Wagner, Acting Assistant Director, served as consultant to the project and participated in the planning, writing, and reviewing of materials. Helen NI.Feulner, Acting Assistant Superintendent, then Director, and Sheila Woods, Assistant Director, Bureau for Speech Improvement, provided guidance and reviewed the speech material. Don Eisenberg, Supervisor of Speech Improvement, wrote the sections on creative dramatics, choral speaking, and speech production. Helen R. Sattley, Director, and Lucia Engle, Assistant Director, Bureau of Libraries, with the cooperation of the district librarians, assisted in the selection of prose and poetry for classroom use and reviewed the section on literature. Edward G. Bernard, Director, and Paula Silberstein, Teacher Assigned, Bureau of Audio-Visual Instruction, gave assistance in the listing of audio-visual materials. Specialists in the field of language arts who, through consultation and review of materials, assisted the production staff include: Louise Matteoni, Brooklyn College; Beatrice Cullinan, New York University; Beryl Bailey, Yeshiva University; William Labov, Columbia University; Ernest Horn, University of Texas. v The community superitendents in each district and the supervisors and teachers in pilot schools made possible the field study and tryout of the program. The curriculum assistants in each district gathered data and material from the pilot schools, introduced and implemented experimental materials, and returned critiques of the material to the Curriculum Bureau staff. Tne interest, cooperation, and experience of all these persons were invaluable in the development of the program. LauraEads, School Research associate, Bureau of Curriculum Development, reviewed the manuscript and made numerous suggestions. I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

At Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum, from September 16 to December 16, 2012, these questions were addressed in an exhibition of work celebrating the centenary of Gordon Parks’s 1912 birth. Titled “The Hard Kind of Courage: Gordon Parks and the Photography of the Civil Rights Era,” this series of deeply profound images offered visual testimony to the heart-rending but courageous sacrifices made by Freedom Riders, the bombing victims Wat the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, the energized protesters at the Great March on Washington, and other participants in the movement. “Photographers of the era,” the exhibition demonstrated, “were integral to advancing the movement by documenting the public and private acts of racial discrimination.”1 Their images succeeded in capturing the strength, fortitude, resiliency, determination, and, most of all, the love of those who dared to step out on faith and stare down physical abuse and death. It is no small thing that all this was done amidst the challenges of being a black artist or writer seeking self-actualization in a racially charged era.

MASS MEDIA AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF AMERICAN POLITICS I. INTRODUCTION The importance of the mass media1 in today's society cannot be over- estimated. Especially in the arena of policy-making, the media's influ- ence has helped shape the development of American government. To more fully understand the political decision-making process in this coun- try it is necessary to understand the media's role in the performance of political officials and institutions. The significance of the media's influ- ence was expressed by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: "The Press has become the greatest power within Western countries, more powerful than the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. One would then like to ask: '2 By what law has it been elected and to whom is it responsible?" The importance of the media's power and influence can only be fully appreciated through a complete understanding of who or what the media are.

    Written evidence submitted by the BBC The DCMS Sub-committee on Online Harms and Disinformation Covid-19 Inquiry April 2020 Executive summary 1. The BBC is the leading public service broadcaster in the UK, with a mission to inform, educate and entertain. Our first public purpose is to provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them, and we deliver this across national, local and global news services.1 2. The Editorial Guidelines are the standards that underpin all our journalism, at all times, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. They apply to all our content, wherever and however it is received. Producing and upholding these Editorial Guidelines is an obligation across the BBC and all output made in accordance with these Editorial Guidelines fulfills our public purposes and meets and goes beyond the requirements of our regulator, Ofcom. 3. Coverage of Covid-19 is dominating the UK news across all platforms. And with a plethora of cross platform content, people are most likely to turn to the BBC’s TV, radio and online services for the latest news on the pandemic (82%)2, significantly more than any other source. 4. BBC News has attracted record audiences across platforms with our nations and regions, UK wide and international coverage highlighting the importance of impartial and accurate news at this time. 5. The BBC remains the UK’s primary source for news. In a world of fake news and disinformation online, audiences said they turn to the BBC for a reliable take on events and this reputation for accuracy and trust sends audiences to the BBC during breaking news and to verify facts.3 During the Covid-19 pandemic 83% of people trust coverage on BBC TV4; and audiences from the UK and around the world have come to BBC News in their millions to stay informed and seek trusted advice on how they can protect themselves and those most at risk.
