And have a wonderful time at our 18th Annual Summergrass San Diego Oh Brother, That’s Good Bluegrass! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Memory of Dick Pierle Sadly, in 2020 Dick Pierle, owner of the iconic Old Blue Sound, passed away. He was a stalwart supporter of the music, the fans, and he was filled with that spirit of camaraderie that bluegrass music brings to so many. many. He loved it all! And he was so grateful to see his dream come true — to see bluegrass music come to the western United States through the many bluegrass festivals and events now prospering here. Dick was a “one of a kind” who knew sound engineering bluegrass music like no other. He loved Summergrass and looked forward to providing sound here each year. Summergrass entertainers always breathed a “Yes!” with a thumbs up on know- ing Old Blue Sound was doing our stage sound. He also had a passion for bluegrass music education for all ages. It was his wish to gift Summergrass for everything our music festival had given to him over the years. His estate has graciously donated funds to support all of our various music in- struction along with support for backstage. This gift from Dick is given “in gratitude for everything that bluegrass music gave to him and for him.” We thank you, Dick, for your support, your friendship, and your dedication throughout the years. You did the Dick Pierle of music proud! . “The ES8 is so versatile, across the board.” some of those same guys. So when the time came for Keith to add keys, they hired me. I didn’t have to audition or anything. I just knew the right people at the right time.” Steve uses several Yamaha keyboards, including the compact S03 synthesizer, the 88-key S80 synthesizer, the Motif ES8, and the P250 digital piano. “I’ve tried out a lot of other keyboards, and they just don’t compare to Yamaha’s stuff,” he says. “I keep buying them, so they must be doing something right! The S03 is great for traveling, being able to practice in hotel rooms and air - ports and stuff. And I’ve had an S80 for several years. It’s small, and very mobile, so I keep that one at home and use it to play around town.” Onstage with Keith Urban, King plays the Motif ES8 and the P250. “There really isn’t a better piano sound out there than the P250—it’s the best,” Steve says. “And I use the Motif for strings, pads, leads, ethnic sounds, all that kind of stuff. The ES8 is so versatile, across the board. And the sounds are fat! They don’t sound cheap or cheesy. That keyboard allows for any situation. It has a lot of meat-and-potatoes sounds—nothing I’m not going to use! A lot of cool textures, a lot of ethereal sounds that can really sparkle. It has a much fatter tone than a lot of other synths.” In a town full of great players, King says, sometimes success comes down to factors other than pure talent.

  • Dynamics of Musical Success: a Bayesian Nonparametric Approach
Dynamics of Musical Success: A Bayesian Nonparametric Approach Khaled Boughanmi1 Asim Ansari Rajeev Kohli (Preliminary Draft) October 01, 2018 1This paper is based on the first essay of Khaled Boughnami's dissertation. Khaled Boughanmi is a PhD candidate in Marketing, Columbia Business School. Asim Ansari is the William T. Dillard Professor of Marketing, Columbia Business School. Rajeev Kohli is the Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Business, Columbia Business School. We thank Prof. Michael Mauskapf for his insightful suggestions about the music industry. We also thank the Deming Center, Columbia University, for generous funding to support this research. Abstract We model the dynamics of musical success of albums over the last half century with a view towards constructing musically well-balanced playlists. We develop a novel nonparametric Bayesian modeling framework that combines data of different modalities (e.g. metadata, acoustic and textual data) to infer the correlates of album success. We then show how artists, music platforms, and label houses can use the model estimates to compile new albums and playlists. Our empirical investigation uses a unique dataset which we collected using different online sources. The modeling framework integrates different types of nonparametrics. One component uses a supervised hierarchical Dirichlet process to summarize the perceptual information in crowd-sourced textual tags and another time-varying component uses dynamic penalized splines to capture how different acoustical features of music have shaped album success over the years. Our results illuminate the broad patterns in the rise and decline of different musical genres, and in the emergence of new forms of music. They also characterize how various subjective and objective acoustic measures have waxed and waned in importance over the years.
