And he’d be among the coolest cats there in his Ohio home, fronting a bluegrass band and owning AM radio stations. Which is what he does now. And that voice! Whether speaking or singing, it’s arresting and comforting at the same time. The band was awesome, with speed or tenderness where called for, in the vein of Doyle Lawson and J.D. Crowe. Their take on a Grandpa Jones song called “Fallen Leaves” was just vocally stunning. This is the true sound of bluegrass renown. A brilliant band.” - Craig Havinghurst of Music City Roots. BLUEGRASS ETC. No other band says “Summergrass” like Bluegrass Etc. and we proudly welcome them back for 2018! Bluegrass Etc., is known worldwide for their stellar music and stage antics. They are both entertaining and masters of their instruments. • Dave and Maggie Hunt
Citation for Dave and Maggie Hunt It is unlikely that the people assembled here in Abbots Bromley will not know of Dave and Maggie Hunt and have some appreciation of their status not only in the folk world but also on its fringes. This Gold Badge Award gives us the opportunity to look back on two varied careers that have, separately and together, brought richness to folk music and community arts over many years. It also provides the opportunity to learn things about the two of them that perhaps were not apparent because you’ve only came across them in one of their guises. In the words of a non-folk song, ‘Let’s start at the very beginning – a very good place to start!’ Like many of us, Dave came to folk music in the 50s via Skiffle, and given its relationship to American folk music there was a natural progression to English folk music and that of its neighbours. The CND marches of his youth also provided a basic repertoire, but early exposure, via work at the Edinburgh Festival, to the likes of Rae and Archie Fisher, Bobby Campbell and Gordie McCulloch, Hamish Imlach, Norman Kennedy, and more started to broaden his knowledge. As an early attendee in 1963 of Wolverhampton’s Giffard Folk Club (he went to its second meeting for the princely entrance donation of 6d – six old pence) he soon graduated to resident status and then on to the committee of a club that was the starting point for all manner of folk activity, as we will see.

  • Roland White Band
The Roland White Band Roland White Bluegrass mandolin master Roland White has played in some of the most influential and popular groups in the music's history, and has played a notable part in creating that history. Springing from a large family of musicians, Roland and his younger brothers Eric and Clarence first played together as youngsters in their native Maine. Moving to southern California in 1955, The Country Boys (later to become The Kentucky Colonels) won talent contests, appeared on local television shows and even landed appearances on The Andy Griffith Show. They toured the country during the folk music boom of the early 60's, creating a sensation among coffeehouse, festival and college audiences with their instrumental virtuosity, traditional brother vocal harmonies and rhythmic innovations. The Kentucky Colonels' influence far exceeded the band's short tenure as an active band. Their "Appalachian Swing" album remains one of the most important albums of that era, a landmark in the history of bluegrass. Moving from The Kentucky Colonels into a position as guitarist for Bill Monroe in the late 60's, Roland absorbed the traditional feel and repertoire from his mentor, the Father Of Bluegrass, which remains a strong element in his music today. From Monroe's band, Roland joined that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973. In 1973 a short-lived reunion of The White Brothers was brought to an untimely end due to Clarence White's tragic death. Of this brief reunion came two concert recordings that capture the excitement of the White Brothers' sound fully matured, after Clarence's excursions in country rock with the Byrds and Roland's studies with the Monroe and Flatt.
