With the number of world championships between them, it is a great honor to be flying the flag from Great Britain again. With hard work, the support of the team and determination, I hope to fill those shoes.” When you started to learn to fly as a teenager, did you ever dream you would be where you are today? “Not at all – but flying through the clouds, and breaking through to see the sun is such a magical feeling. I’m extremely lucky to have this opportunity to fly in the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, and I am going to give it the best of my abilities. I thought I had reached the pinnacle when I was selected to join the RAFAT The Red Arrows! But now, flying an Edge 540 through race track at such low levels, at such high speeds has to be the ultimate.” How do you mentally and physically prepare for each race? “The physical preparation is continuous, and I enjoy running and walking in the mountains with my wife and family, but the mental preparation is more specific to the race weekend. Kirsty says that nothing appears to stress me, and I suppose I am good at compartmentalizing, and therefore being able to prepare and focus my mind quite specifically. The support of the team is paramount in helping me prepare mentally, by taking away much of the stresses.” How important is track analysis in helping you prepare for each race, and how do you collate it? “Part of the team includes a Race Team Tactician – Neil is an analytical genius who previously worked with Nigel Lamb and Team Breitling. His calculations factor in many elements – such as raceplane capabilities, track design, G force, altitude and weather. Neil will be working extremely closely with me, and it is then up to me to translate his analytics into reality on the race track.“ Which aircraft have you enjoyed flying the most during your career? “Comparing the RAF fast jets to the Extra or the Edge 540 is very tricky, because they are for very different purposes. But I suppose with regards to being a challenge, it has to be the new race aircraft – the Edge 540. It is a thoroughbred, with a huge performance jump from the Extra, and is a different level of aircraft all together.” 6 [email protected] +44 (0)1604 671309 Newcastle University Air Squadron 1988 Joined the RAF Completed RAF 1993 Training 1997 RAF Air Cadets 2000 24 1992 1975 Private Pilot Born in Licence before he could drive Leader of The Blades Amersham, UK 2007 2016-2017 RAFAT ‘The Red Arrows’ Leader 2000- Synchro Pair 2005 Harrier GR7 2018 Awarded prizes in aerobatic and ‘Guest’ Pilot formation flying for the Blades Qualified Weapons 2016-2017 Instructor Red Bull Air Race Challenger Class 2015 2009 Joined ‘The RAFAT ‘The Red Arrows’ Blades Aerobatic Commanding Officer and 2018 Display Team’ Team Leader Red Bull Air Race Master Class flying the Edge 540 2013 2019 Left the 2013 24 2nd season in the Red Bull Air RAF Joined Race Master Class Lockheed Martin Display flying 1950s Hawker Hunter ‘Miss Demeanour’ 7 [email protected] +44 (0)1604 671309 THE RACE TEAM TEAM PRINCIPAL TEAM MANAGER TEAM TECHNICIAN ANDY OFFER OBE REBECCA ALLEN ANDREAS KAUFFMAN Andy will primarily be taking the decisive lead to steer Rebecca will provide an experienced oversight for the Andreas will take on anything and everything the ‘Best of British’ Blades Racing Team to fulfil its race team, and ensure the Blades Race Team can technical, along with ensuring that the safety of the true potential. Sport Tim Barnes-Clay gets our engines revving with a Red Bull look at the most thrilling World air race in the world Air Race reated in 2003, and officially the World Championship of air racing since 2005, the Red Bull Air Race is followed by Championship millions of fans across the globe. The fastest motorsport series in the world Cfeatures 14 of the best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, pilots navigate a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons 25 meters high. New since 2014 is the Challenger Cup, a competition which enables young talented pilots to work towards gaining entry into the Master Class of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship. When the 2015 Red Bull Air Race World Championship kicked off in Abu Dhabi on 13th/14th February, defending champion Nigel Lamb had his work cut out for him. The Brit was pushed to the limits by the 2008 world champion Hannes Arch who finished second overall last year – and the two-time world champion Paul Bonhomme, who won last year’s season opener in Abu Dhabi and was third overall in 2014. 1 waterfrontmagazines.co.uk 2 Sport In what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive fields in the history of the world’s fastest motorsports series, Lamb will also be trying to stay on top of the expanded roster of 14 pilots in the high-speed, low-altitude sport. “Those sudden changes make the track even more difficult for the pilots when they’re flying through it at 370 km/h.” There were five different winners in the eight races last season as the gaps between victory and defeat dwindled to their closest ever, just a mere thousandth of a second separating some heats, and nine of the 12 pilots made it onto the podium at least once.

Red Bull Air Race World Championship returns in 2014 The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be back in the skies in February 2014 with a full seven-race World Championship staged in 6 countries on 3 continents including the UK. The return of the world’s fastest motorsport series was announced at a news conference at the Putrajaya Maritime Centre in Malaysia today. PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), October 8th 2013. “We’re delighted to announce that the new Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be launched on February 28th in Abu Dhabi (UAE),” said Erich Wolf, CEO Red Bull Air Race GmbH. “We’ve all worked very hard over the last three years fine-tuning some of the safety aspects to bring the sport to a new level. We never took our eye off the target and neither have these fantastic pilots or the great fans around the world. Their interest in the sport remained unbelievably high during these past few years. We can’t wait to get back in the air in February 2014.” The fourth stop on the 2014 calendar brings the Championship to Ascot Racecourse (UK). Charles Barnett, CEO Ascot said, “The Red Bull Air Race World Championship, like Ascot, is a respected global brand and showcases elite pilots to a worldwide audience. This is a tremendously important announcement for us as this is by far the most significant event outside Horse Racing that we have staged at the racecourse. The UK has a reputation as a leader in staging major sports events – the recent Olympic Games, of course, and high profile annual events such as Wimbledon, The Open Championship and, of course, Royal Ascot.

  • The 2014 Air Race Season So
WHEL – Aerospace Resources & more (www.whel.de) The 2014 air race season so far Now that the spectacular first-ever Red Bull Air Race in Putrajaya, Malaysia, has come to a close it’s probably the right time for an early review. Following a three year break, the return of the air race in 2014 was desperately sought after by pilots and fans alike. Expectations were certainly high, but also clearly some things had to be changed. Now, have these changes paid off? Here’s the lowdown fol- lowing three exiting races with three different winners on three fairly different race tracks. Standardised engines, propellers and exhaust systems This has probably been the most important move to re-establish the Red Bull Air Race as a competi- tion among the best, most skilful aerobatic pilots in the world. Rather than allowing it to further evolve into a “who will spend the most on tuning his engine”-game, Formula 1-style. At the end of the 2010 season the final race at EuroSpeedway Lausitz made clear the airplanes apparently weren’t on level playing ground. There was said to be an advantage of around 20% in power from the strongest over fairly stock engines on some airplanes. We are talking some extra 50 horse powers here. At the same time lightweight props were adding performance but also safety risks. Now the standardised Lycoming Thunderbolt AEIO-540-EXP engines are quoted to be within 2% of each other. That translates to around 5 horse powers margin; something that may not make all the difference in the world.
