NEW CHEVY MODELS AND ENGINE. The GM board has approved a next-generation compact Chevrolet for US and global markets, a next generation of the popular Chevy Aveo, and GM’s turbocharged 1.4- liter four-cylinder engine for the US. The Chevy Volt concept new compact aims to set equipment, quality and safety benchmarks for the size class. The new Chevy Aveo is also expect- ed to have class-leading fuel economy when it goes on sale in the US in late 2010. CHEVY VOLT IS A GO. The Chevy Volt took a major step toward the showroom with board approval for funding produc- tion development and tooling. Technol- ogies for this extended-range electric vehi- cle, including its lithium-ion batteries, should be ready for volume production on schedule. GM plans to produce the Volt at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, subject to government deals. CAPACITY ADJUSTMENTS. GM will also quickly increase production of small and midsize cars, while reducing production of pickups and truck- based SUVs. Arizona’s Midwest transplants will want to know about plants. GM plans to add a third shift in September at the Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which builds the hot-selling Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6, and a third shift at Lordstown Car Assemb- ly in Ohio, which builds the Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5. On the other side of the equation, GM will cease production at four truck plants. Oshawa Truck Assembly in Canada, which builds the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, will likely cease production in 2009, Chevy Aveo while Moraine, Ohio, which builds the Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7x, will end production at the end of the 2010 model run, or sooner. Janesville, Wisconsin, will cease production of medium-duty trucks by the end of 2009, and of the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon in 2010, or sooner, if market demand dictates. Chevrolet Kodiak medium- duty truck production will also end in Toluca, Mexico, by the end of this year. STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT FOR HUMMER BRAND. GM is undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer brand to determine its fit within the GM portfolio. The company is considering all options, from a complete revamp of the product lineup to a partial or complete sale of the brand. The big automakers have long made most of their profit from trucks and SUVs. GM is now counting on beating others to growth in the compact and fuel-efficient markets. We’ll stand by to see what others do. “These higher gasoline prices are changing consumer behavior and rapidly,” said Wagoner. “We don't think this is a temporary spike or shift. We think it is permanent.” ■ 6 • July-August 2008 • ARIZONADRIVER DESTINATION DIRECTORY Arizona California Colorado NATIONAL PARK SERVICE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE TOURISM - ATTRACTIONS - EVENTS National Park Service - Arizona National Park Service - California Colorado Activity Centers, Inc. http://www.nps.gov/state/az http://www.nps.gov/state/ca PO Box 129 • Frisco CO 80443 800-777-8642 • www.coloradoinfo.com Grand Canyon National Park TOURISM - ATTRACTIONS - EVENTS PO Box 129 • Grand Canyon AZ 86023 Disneyland AUTOMOTIVE 923-638-7888 Visitor Info Recorded Message Anaheim • 714-781-4565 • www.disneyland.com Shelby American Collection Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Palm Desert Visitor Information Center 5020 Chaparral Court • Boulder CO 80308 10 Organ Pipe Drive • Ajo AZ 85321-9626 72-567 Highway 111 • Palm Desert CA 92260 303-516-9565 • .shelbyamericancollection.org 520-387-6849 Visitor Information 800-873-2428 • www.palm-desert.org Petrified Forest National Park San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau Mexico PO Box 2217 • Petrified Forest Natl Park AZ 86028 2215 India Street • San Diego CA 92101 928-524-66228 Visitor Information RESORTS AND LODGING 800-359-6205 • www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors Saguaro National Park Puerto Peñasco Mexico Online AUTOMOTIVE 3693 South Old Spanish Trail Beachfront home

The most powerful factory-built Ford Mustang in history takes to the street next year, following a unique collaboration between performance car legend Carroll Shelby and the Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT). Ford took the wraps off the 450-plus-horsepower Ford Shelby Cobra GT500 show car at the New York International Auto Show March 23. Designed in the unmistakable image of Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s, the Shelby Cobra GT500 melds SVT's modern engineering with the big-block performance that made the original GT500 the king of the road. "The all-new 2005 Ford Mustang is one of the hottest cars in many years," says Phil Martens, Ford group vice president, Product Creation. "Its chassis was engineered from the beginning to be the basis of a high-performance, world-class sports car from SVT, and the Shelby Cobra GT500 is it." Carroll Shelby lends his support to SVT, adapting his earlier role as a senior advisor on the "Dream Team" that was assembled to develop and build the 2005 Ford GT.

  • The Legend of Ford and Carroll Shelby, Changing the Course of Automotive History
The Legend of Ford and Carroll Shelby, Changing the Course of Automotive History In the early 1960s, the advent of the American muscle car era would mean high-power V8 engines, quicker-shifting four-on-the-floor transmissions, bigger tires and improved suspensions for faster elapsed times as drag strips popped up across the country. This fierce competition for bragging rights on the weekends would lead to an increase in vehicle sales on showroom floors come Monday. With Henry Ford II determined his company could compete with the best and fastest in the world, a boisterous young man from Texas with a reputation for building winning race chassis powered by Ford engines came to the attention of executives in Dearborn. Soon a collaboration formed between Carroll Shelby and his Shelby America and Ford Motor Company – one that would change the course of automotive history. 1965 Shelby GT350 Shelby GT350, the first high-performance Mustang While Ford engineers worked in secret to develop the revolutionary Mustang pony car, Shelby was already hard at work building Ford-powered cars to take on the world at Le Mans. As the very first 1965 Mustangs came off the line, several were quietly shipped to Shelby America in California for engineering of the first high-performance Mustang – the Shelby GT350. Less than a year after Mustang began production, Ford and Shelby pounced with the first high- performance model, Shelby GT350. Powered by a Shelby-modified Ford 289 high-performance V8 churning out 306 horsepower, the 1965 Mustang Shelby GT350 competition models were built and homologated for SCCA competition, quickly winning the first race on February 14, 1965.

To: The Captain of the Shonan Maru From: Pete Bethune – Captain of Ady Gil Dear Sir. Opinions from Maritime experts agree that in the ramming of the Ady Gil, which occurred on 6th January 2010, that you were responsible for the event. Below is their opinion: 1. You approached from my port side, so I had right of way 2. You were the overtaking vessel so you had an obligation to keep well clear of me 3. Your water canons impeded yours and our view leading up to the ramming, which may have exacerbated the situation 4. You fired LRADs at us, adding to the general state of confusion 5. You turned hard to starboard at the last moment, deliberately ramming my vessel and endangering my crew. 6. The Ady Gil sank as a result of your actions in ramming it. I am here to arrest you. I am requesting that you transfer now to the Steve Irwin, where we will take you into custody, and we will deliver you to the Maritime Safety Authority and the New Zealand Police once we reach Wellington (New Zealand). If you refuse to be arrested, then I am requesting that you deliver me to Wellington (New Zealand). Having sunk my vessel, and with our issuing of a mayday call, you have an obligation under maritime law to provide me with safe passage back to land. I will refuse to be handed over to any Sea Shepherd vessel. I will also refuse to be handed over to any New Zealand or Australian Coastguard, Customs or Naval vessel.
