Background of the Project In the Republic of Honduras (hereinafter referred to as Honduras), 39% of the total population is under 15 years of age (World Health Organization: WHO, 2006), and the pregnancy in adolescence has been increasing, given the high proportion of the population of teenagers. Under the circumstance, deliveries at health facilities by women in adolescent years reached to 35% (Ministry of Health of Honduras, 2001) and the maternal mortality of young women has risen, as high as 391 out of 100,000 for the age group of 12-14 and 160 for the age group of 15-19. It is considered that the pregnancy in adolescence increases the risks of maternal and perinatal mortality, and it is a social issue associated with poverty, which can result in not only the unintended pregnancy but also the Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and HIV/AIDS. It also has negative influences on the growing up process and the issues related to school attendance and education. -

Yet, it was still too early to experience the real explosion of bird song, which usually happens after dawn. Then, after 05:30 AM, the chorus started when a vocal Great Kiskadee broke the morning silence, followed by the scratchy notes of two Hoffmann´s Woodpeckers, a nesting pair of Inca Doves, the ascending and monotonous song of the Yellow-bellied Elaenia, and the cacophony of an (apparently!) engaged pair of Rufous-naped Wrens. This was indeed a warm welcome to magical Costa Rica! To complement the first morning of birding, two boreal migrants, Baltimore Orioles and a Tennessee Warbler, joined the bird feast just outside the hotel area. Broad-billed Motmot . Photo: D. Circling the slope of Poas volcano, we eventually reached the inspiring Bosque de Paz. With its hummingbird feeders and trails transecting a beautiful moss-covered forest, this lodge offered us the opportunity to see one of Costa Rica´s most difficult-to-see Grallaridae, the Scaled Antpitta. -

Do Sympatric Heliconias Attract the Same Species of Hummingbird? Observations on the Pollination Ecology of Heliconia beckneri and H. tortuosa at Cloudbridge Nature Reserve Joseph Taylor University of Glasgow The Hummingbird-Heliconia Project The hummingbird family (Trochilidae), endemic to the Neotropics, is remarkable not only for its beauty but also because of its ability to hover over a flower while feeding, its wing movements a blur. These lively birds require frequent, nutritious feeding to sustain their expenditure of energy, and some plants have evolved to attract and feed them in exchange for pollination services. Prominent among such plants are most species in the genus Heliconia (Heliconiaceae), which are medium to large clone-forming herbs with banana-like leaves (Stiles, 1975). The hummingbird-Heliconia interdependence is a good example of co- evolution, and this study is concerned with one aspect of this relationship. Since several species of hummingbird and Heliconia exist at Cloudbridge, a middle-elevation nature reserve in Costa Rica, we wondered whether particular species of Heliconia had evolved an attraction for particular hummingbird species, which might reduce the chances of hybridisation and pollen loss; or whether the plants compete for a variety of hummingbirds. At Cloudbridge, on the Pacific slope of southern Costa Rica’s Talamanca mountain range, Heliconia beckneri , an endangered species (website 1) restricted to this area and thought to be of hybrid origin (Daniels and Stiles, 1979; website 2), and H. tortuosa occur together. Stiles (1979) names the Green Hermit ( Phaethornis guy ) as the primary pollinator of both species and the Violet Sabrewing ( Campylopterus hemileucurus ) as the secondary pollinator of H. -

SLADE Division of Biological Sciences, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045 In several recent studies the branching system of trees was assumed to constitute a geometric series with constant branching ratio indicative of the adaptive geometry of a species. However, in a population of young Cottonwood trees {Populus deltoides), branching ratios varied significantly within the crown of individual trees and among experimental groups of different growth vigor. With a simple mathematical model, based on the symmetric branch system of the tropical tree Tabebuia rosea, we showed that, with increasing size of a tree, the geometric (exponential) increase in branch number per order must be reduced, if a physiologically optimum leaf area per terminal branch is to be maintained. Also, branching ratios based on centripetal branch ordering are not predictive of tree development and ignore information essential to characterize the architectural model of a tree. Bifurcation ratios thus appear to be unsuited as indicators of the adaptive geometry of trees. The present study has been performed experimentally by in vitro method to examine the anti cancer activity of flowers of Tabebuia rosea. The report on to the research reveals a significant anti cancer activity at different concentrations of the sample solution. The flowers of Tabebuia rosea was tested for its anti cancer activity against liver cancer HePG2 cell line by MTT assay. The CTC50 value of the sample was 205.3µg/ml against liver cancer HePG2 cell lines. Significant results were observed thereby explaining the use of this plant in the traditional system of medicine. Traditional herbal medicines have a long history of use and are generally considered to be safer than artificial drugs. Over 50% of all modern scientific drugs are natural products that play an important role in drug development in pharmaceutical industries. Smith ABSTRACT. Recent molecular studies have shown Tabebuia to be polyphyletic, thus necessitating taxonomic revision. These revisions are made here by resurrecting two genera to contain segregate clades of Tabebuia. Roseodendron Miranda consists of the two species with spathaceous calices of similar texture to the corolla. Handroanthus Mattos comprises the principally yellow flowered species with an indumentum of hairs covering the leaves and calyx. The species of Handroanthus are also characterized by having extremely dense wood containing copious quantities of lapachol. Tabebuia is restricted to those species with white to red or rarely yellow flowers and having an indumentum of stalked or sessile lepidote scales.
