CLARK OF FIRST UMC FRANKLIN NAMED CHAIR OF THE UMPH BOARD NASHVILLE, TN – The Board of The United Methodist Publishing House (Cokesbury and Abingdon Press) met at its new Nashville headquarters building October 10-12 to organize for the 2017- 2020 quadrennium. The Reverend Brian K. Milford was elected as the President & Publisher (CEO) and the new board began its work by selecting Justice Cornelia Clark as Chair, Reverend Thomas Salsgiver as Vice Chair, Reverend Sunyoung Lee as Secretary and Tammy Gaines as Treasurer. Justice Clark is a member of First UMC in Franklin, TN in the Tennessee Annual Justice Cornelia A. Clark Conference. The board heard reports including learning about a successful year with sales of $61,828 million, and with a favorable net revenue to invest in infrastructure, pension funding and to meet other ministry needs. The gathering also marked the retirement of Neil Alexander who has served as President and Publisher since 1996. The newly constituted board made up of 25 members (down from the previous 43 members by action of the General Conference to achieve a more workable size and reduce costs) worshipped, reviewed priorities including new initiatives for building digital capabilities for serving now and in the future, affirmed the next year’s budget and celebrated Milford’s inauguration and Alexander’s 28 years of service. In a special evening dedicated to the theme of “Building Loving and Just Communities,” the board heard from keynote speaker the Reverend F. Willis Johnson who challenged all to take responsibility for tackling the consequences of failed systems and broken relationships; reminding that God calls us to enlist wherever we are in the struggle for human justice and reconciliation. Willis’ new book Holding Up Your Corner; Talking About Race in Your Community, authored in the aftermath of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, where Rev. Willis is senior minister at Wellspring Church, will be published in December by Abingdon Press. Board Chair, Tennessee State Supreme Court Justice Cornelia A. Clark, urged the members to work earnestly to extend the publishing ministry reminding all, “From the first book steward in 1789, John Dickins, to the most recent Publishers, Neil Alexander and Brian Milford, ‘spreading the books’ has been our holy calling as we provide quality resources to help more people in more places come to know and deepen their love of God through Jesus Christ, learn to love God, and choose to serve God and neighbor.” # # # The United Methodist Publishing House is a publisher and distributor to Christian clergy and laity, with primary responsibilities for the publishing and distribution for The United Methodist Church.     Methodist History, 48:1 (October 2009) “AND ARE WE YET ALIVE”: REFLECTIONS ON THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CHARLES YRIGOYEN, JR. In 1749, Charles Wesley published a poem in a collection titled, Hymns and Sacred Poems. The poem was located in the section of the book desig- nated “Hymns for Christian Friends.” Since the time of the Wesleys, Charles’ poem has been the opening hymn of the British Methodist Conference and has often opened many other annual conferences of world Methodism. Some of its words, but not all, are especially appropriate for the celebration of the first twenty years of our Historical Society. Many of you know the hymn, #553 in The United Methodist Hymnal: “And are we yet alive, and see each other’s face? Glory and praise to Jesus give for his redeeming grace.” Just twenty years ago this week our Society was born here at Lake Junaluska. Three hundred fifty people were present for the launching. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Albert C. Outler, world renowned scholar of the Wesleys, outstanding theologian, and leading ecumenist. At the time we did not know it would be Outler’s last public address, the con- summation of a brilliant career. Some of those present this evening attended that event and became charter members of the Society. Others attending that evening have crossed the threshold from this life to the next. The organization of the denomination’s Historical Society was an indi- cation of United Methodist interest in our church’s history.

    Two Separate Unions Formed One United Church by David Oberlin, 1979 The United Methodist Church is the product of two recent church mergers – one in 1946, which brought the Evangelical and United Brethren in Christ denominations together to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church (hereafter called the EUB Church); and one in 1968, which combined the EUB and Methodist denominations to form the United Methodist Church. Each merger created a new denomination, altered church organization, and had an impact on its membership. This paper examines these two mergers and their impact on members of affected congregations in Union County, Pennsylvania. Located in a rural setting in central Pennsylvania, Union County includes many small communities and two major towns – Lewisburg with almost 9,000 residents, and Mifflinburg with a population close to 7,000. Within the county are 17 United Methodist churches – three of which are former Methodist, and fourteen of which are former EUB. While the United Brethren in Christ Church was active in central Pennsylvania, all of the former EUB congregations in Union County were originally Evangelical. Each of the former Methodist congregations has its own pastor, and ten of the fourteen former EUB congregations make up three circuits within the county. Because there were no United Brethren in Christ churches in Union County, the 1946 merger did not have much of an impact on the congregations of the county. The 1968 merger, on the other hand, had a large impact in Union County because EUB and Methodist churches were located throughout the county. In Mifflinburg and Lewisburg, for example, the 1968 merger resulted in two United Methodist churches located within a block of each other.

Your pain and struggle over whether to stay together, as you consider the One Church Model, or the Connexional Conference Model, or to separate as you consider the Traditional Model, is why I am writing this paper. The purpose of this paper is to offer a particular framework for thinking about these particular models. Specifically, this paper intends to argue for the “One Church Model” by showcasing Wesley’s trinitarian vision of unitive love that follows the “first principles” of the Gospel to unite us in God’s mission to reconcile all things in creation. If we look through the aperture of the Methodist Practice of Connexion, we will see stunning and spectacular images of the future glory of God already at work in the making of a New Creation through the Church as an icon of the glory of God. Look through the aperture of the Methodist Practice of Connexion and you will see some of the most stunning pictures of the flame and the Cross connecting with the poorest of the poor, with the broken and wounded places of creation, and giving to us a way of peeking around the corner, to see some of the most stunning images of the future glory of New Creation.
