Project #3: Inspired by… - Description Critique Date - 3/29/19 (Fri) "The world is filled to suffocating. Man has placed his token on every stone. Every word, every image, is leased and mortgaged. We know that a picture is but a space in which a variety of images, none of them original, blend and clash." – Sherrie Levine Conceptual Requirements: In this project, you will do your best to interpret the style of a particular photographer who interests you. You will research them as well as their work in order to make photographs that have a signature aesthetic or approach that is specific to them, and also contribute your ideas. Technical Requirements: 1. Start with the list on the back of this page (the Project Description sheet), and start web searches for these photographers. All the ones listed are masters in their own right and a good starting point for you to begin your search. Select one and confirm your choice with me by the due date (see the syllabus). 2. After choosing a photographer, go on the web and to the library to check out books on them, read interviews, and look at every image you can that is made by them. Learn as much as you can and take notes on your sources. 3. Type your name, date, and “Project 3: Inspired by...” at the top of a Letter sized page. Then write a 2 page research paper on your chosen photographer. Be sure to include information such as where and when they were born, where it is that they did their work, what kind of camera and film formats they used, their own personal history, etc. -

The work was xxxIa response to September the 11th and sprung from the artist’s experience of the city as a visitor. -

The interview was conducted at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York by Joseph Trovato for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview JOSEPH TROVATO: This interview with Mr. Beaumont Newhall is taking place at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, January 23, 1965. Mr. Newhall, your name has been associated with the best in the field of photography for many years, or just about as long as I can remember, from the early days of the Museum of Modern Art, your writings on photography, such as The History of Photography, which has gone through several editions, I think, and on through to your present directorship here at Eastman House. How long have you held your present post here? BEAUMONT NEWHALL: Actually my present post as director I assumed the first of Sept. 1958. Previous to that I held the title of curator and worked as the associate and assistant to the first director, General Oscar N. Solbert. I came to Rochester for the specific purpose of setting up Eastman House as a museum, bringing to it my knowledge of museum practice, as well as photography. We opened as a museum to the public on the 7th of November, 1949. JOSEPH TROVATO: Well I was about to ask you in addition to my question regarding your career and while we’re on the subject of your career – I think you have already begun to touch upon – we would like to have you give us a sort of resume of your background, education, various positions that you have held, and so forth. -

Everything from racehorses to rap artists to bars, bracelets, and yachts have taken the name. “It has an ultra-cool, hip and happening feel to it,” said a Los Angeles designer about his new necklace, the Tribeca. Actually, no it doesn’t. Not to those who know the neighborhood. The Tribeca Show undertakes a de-branding of Tribeca through the perspectives of five Tribeca-based photographers and one local poet. Their work, each in a different way, counters the area’s over-hyped reputation for trendiness and glamour. The show is curated by April Koral and Carl Glassman, whose publication, The Tribeca Trib, has been chronicling Tribeca in news, features, and photography for 25 years. Photos by Glassman, a photojournalist and documentary photographer, along with images by photographers Donna Ferrato, Marc Kaczmarek, Susan Rosenberg Jones, and Allan Tannenbaum, along with a new poetry installation by Max Blagg, present a nuanced portrait of the neighborhood across decades that defies the media’s insistent focus on celebrity and wealth. Far more than its famous-but-rarely-seen residents such as Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake, or its annual film festival, the neighborhood—one of the city’s oldest—prizes its rich history and preserved 19th-century streetscape. -
