The thesis argues that analysis of these practices shows how this culture is consumption oriented, event-driven and media obsessed. Initially, this argument is developed from a critical, hermeneutic, relativist and interpretive assessment that draws upon the works of authors such as Baudrillard and De Bord and other critiques of contemporary ‘digital culture’. The empirical part of the thesis then examines the array of popular search terms used on the World Wide Web over a period of 16 months from September 2001 to February 2003. Taxanomic classification of these search terms reveals the limited range of virtual and physical artefacts that are sought by the users of Web search engines. While nineteen hundred individual artefacts occur in the array of search terms, these can classified into a relatively small group of higher order categories. Critical analysis of these higher order categories reveals six cultural traits that predominant in the apparently wide array of search terms; freeness, participation, do-it-yourself/customisation, anonymity/privacy, perversion and information richness.

  • A Measurement Study of Web Redirections in the Internet By
A Measurement Study of Web Redirections in the Internet by Krishna B. Vangapandu (Under the direction of Kang Li) Abstract The use of URL redirections has been recently studied to filter spam as email and web spammers use redirection to camouflage their web pages. However, many web sites employ redirection for legitimate reasons such as logging, load-balancing and security. While a majority of the studies on URL redirection focused on spam redirection we provide a holistic view of the use of URL redirections in the Internet. We performed a redirection study on various sets of URLs that includes known legitimate and spam websites. We observed that URL redirections are widely used in today's Internet with more than 40% of URLs in the top websites redirecting for various reasons. It was observed that redirections occur in chains whose length on an average was close to 1.4. We also observed that server-side redirection is prominent in both legitimate and spam redirections. Spam redirections employed JavaScript redirections more often and a very high percentage of spam redirections lead to an external domain. Apart from providing a quantitative view of URL redirections, we also provide a further classification of legitimate redirections based on the reason of redirection. We expect that our measurement results and classifications to provide a better understanding of the usage of URL redirection, which could help improve the spam filtering and other applications that rely on URLs as the web identifiers. • The Mainstreaming of the Hard-Core Pornographic Film Industry, 1969-1990
ABSTRACT Title of Document: STAYING POWER: THE MAINSTREAMING OF THE HARD-CORE PORNOGRAPHIC FILM INDUSTRY, 1969-1990 Stephen Patrick Johnson, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor James B. Gilbert, Department of History When publicly screened hard-core pornographic films first appeared in theatres, in 1969, they generated less than $1 million in annual revenue. By 1990, revenue approached $600 million. By 2000, estimates placed U.S. revenue between $5 and $15 billion. This dissertation examines the hard-core industry’s growth by concentrating on changes in the mode of consumption as well as noting changes in the films themselves. And it ties the story of the industry and its customers to the intersecting narratives of the Supreme Court, anti-pornography activism, and the Federal government. The industry provided a product desired by a large and growing number of Americans. Videotape technology moved hard-core film from the highly contested public space of the motion picture theatre to the more easily defended private space of the home. The more effective the films were in arousing viewers and the more secret their consumption, the more the industry grew. The nature of the debate over hard- core pornography favored those defending consumption. While opponents of hard- core emphasized pornography’s putative harm, evidence for these claims never rose above the anecdotal level. Finally, successful prosecution of hard-core films became increasingly untenable. Even when Federal and state prosecutions increased during the 1980s, a grudging cultural toleration of hard-core films meant prosecutors could no longer rely upon juries to return guilty verdicts.
