02 MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 Message from the Director General

I. MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL “Alleluia… Alleluia… Christ has risen indeed… Alleluia.” Warm and prayerful greetings of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! Easter is a season of happiness and joy. It is the time of a new beginning – a new life. Easter brings freshness to our mission work, our community life and our personal spiritual life- rejuvenated with the power and strength of the Risen Lord. As missionaries this Easter has a very special significance for our lives since the Society has begun to celebrate her Golden Jubilee year. Easter announces to each one of us our obligation to be filled with and be refreshed by the missionary zeal of Christ. The resurrection of our Lord is preceded by His passion and death. The gospel according to Luke presents in 9:51 “he set his face towards Jerusalem”. This clearly shows the determination of Jesus to embrace the cross at Jerusalem and thereby becoming glorified by God. Through his death on the cross Jesus affirmed his mission of redeeming the world for God. His resurrection from such a humiliating death is an affirmation of this mission by God the Father. The event of Easter transforms the humanity and the entire world. The disciples become apostles of a new era, new vision and a new way of life. They become His messengers to the ends of the earth (cf. Acts 1:08), because Easter ensured His continued presence with them for the mission of witnessing (Mat 28: 18-20) Becoming missionary is a challenge. Forfeiting ourselves in spite of the current attacks and accusations on the church and the priesthood, living a selfless life for the people of God is essentially radical. Our life is challenged to be persecuted and crucified. Our life is a challenge when we become His witnesses. This Easter season should be a time of renewal for the Society and for each one of us. As Jesus found time to be with the Father,

MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 03 Message from the Director General

to be “alone” with Him, to be strengthened to accept the challenges awaiting him in Jerusalem, we too should be finding time to be “alone” with Christ in our prayers. Resurrected Jesus found it a challenge to gather the dispersed, cold-hearted disciples, and strengthen them with the power of the Holy Spirit. So too we should be able to join ourselves with the fellow missionaries and be strengthened mutually through prayers and selfless services. Let us be ready to accept the challenge of accepting the mission in a more profound manner which cardinal Mar George Alencherry has put forward before us in his inaugural address on the occasion of the inauguration of our Jubilee Year. Dear fellow missionaries, in the season of Easter let us accept this challenge and let our lives be guided by his Spirit so that our hearts may be burning with the zeal for mission. Let this Easter prompt us to celebrate the Golden Jubilee Year with more commitment and enthusiasm. For this, the source and power comes from our celebration of the Holy Qurbana and meditation upon the Word of God. Let us be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to give Christ whom we have “tasted” in the Holy Qurbana and the Word to the people who are thirsting for HIM. Let our Blessed Mother and St Thomas, our patron, help and guide us in accepting our challenges. Let us be rooted in the mission of proclaiming the good news to the whole creation (cf. Mk 16:15).

II. MST GOLDEN JUBILEE PROGRAMMES 1. MST Golden Jubilee Inauguration [Reported by Fr Thomas Chenganariparampil] The Missionary Society of St. Thomas the Apostle (MST) entered into the Golden Jubilee year on 22nd February 2017. The inauguration of the Golden Jubilee of MST was a simple but historical event. It took place on Wednesday 22nd February 2017 at Deepti Bhavan on the 50th Foundation day of MST. 49 years ago, exactly on this day MST was formally inaugurated by its founder Mar Sebastian Vayalil in the presence of the prefect of the Oriental Congregation, His Eminence Cardinal Fürstenberg, and most of the bishops of the Syro Malabar Hierarchy. a. Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Heavenly Patron As a spiritual preparation for starting the Jubilee Year, the MST organized a pilgrimage to the tomb of the heavenly patron of MST, situated at St. Thomas Basilica, Mylapore. Considering the past fifty years of our Society, 50 MST priests—representing the 44 batches—

under the leadership of the Director General visited the tomb of St. Thomas, offered Holy Qurbana and prayed the Novena prayer and sought the intercession of the saint for all the members of MST and all their activities on 20th February 2017. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakel gave a touching homily on this occasion. After the Holy Mass very Rev. Fr. Director General lighted the lamp from the tomb of St.

Thomas to be brought to Deepti Bhavan to light the jubilee lamp. b. The Jubilee Inaugural Mass In the morning on 22nd February a solemn Holy Qurbana was celebrated at Deepti Bhavan with Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakel as the main celebrant and concelebrated by a good number of MST priests from across the world. A good number of neighbours also

came to participate in this historic event. Our Director General, Very Rev. Fr. Kurian Ammanathukunnel, preached homily during the Holy Mass. He emphasised the importance and relevance of MST in the present missionary context of . He also highlighted the contributions of MST and remembered the contributions of the members both for the mission of the Church and for the growth of the MST. c. Formal Inauguration of the Golden Jubilee The formal inauguration of the Golden Jubilee of the MST was done at 5:30 p.m. on 22nd February. His Eminence Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church, formally inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Year. In the beginning the lamp brought from the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, the patron of MST, was solemnly received at

the Generalate. The reception was solemnised by the beautiful rhythmic Chendamelam by the students of Angel Home, Kadanad. Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, the bishop of Palai, presided over the inaugural function. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakel and Dr. Babu Sebastian, the Vice Chancellor of M.G. University, Kottayam were guests of honour. Very Rev. Fr. Director General welcomed all the dignitaries and the guests for the function. The Major Archbishop unveiled the new painting of St. Thomas (painted by Mr. Jinu George). He also lighted the Jubilee Lamp from the lamp brought from Mylapore. In his inaugural address he highlighted the contributions of MST for the growth of the mission of the Syro-Malabar Church and how it helped to develop the missionary consciousness in the mother church. Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt said that the diocese of Pala is proud of the Missionary Society founded by its first Bishop and most of its first members and a good number of its total members are from this diocese. The missionaries of MST are doing pioneer work in several areas, paving way for the future.

Dr. Babu Sebastian, the Vice-Chancellor of M.G. University, Kottayam appreciated the missionary initiatives of MST and its missionaries. Rev. Fr. Kurian Valiamangalam, one of the pioneer members and two-term Director General of MST, spoke on the missionary aspirations of MST. Sr. Lissa DST, the Superior General of DST Congregation, spoke of the achievements of the MST and thanked for its support for the DST congregation in the missions. Sr. Lissa said that she is proud of being a witness to the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Year of MST, as she was present also on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of MST and, in 1968 as a child, on occasion of the inauguration of the MST. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakel released two books on this occasion. The first one was a booklet in on MST, explaining its origin, growth and its present activities prepared by Fr. James Kurukilamkatt MST. The second book was a devotional book on St. Thomas, with incidents from the life of St. Thomas the Apostle,

taken from different sources, reflections and prayers. This book is prepared by Fr. James Kurukilamkatt and Fr. Paul Painadath in such a way that it can be prayed for 31 days in the month of July as a devotion to St. Thomas, the father of our church. Jubilee Year flag, candles and a foundation stone for the proposed jubilee memorial shrine were blessed by the Major Archbishop on this day.Fr. Daey Kunnath presented a beautiful skit on the missionary preaching of St. Thomas, the founding of MST in Kerala and the

present activities of MST. The song on MST prepared by Fr. Ashok Kollamkudy and sung by his team was really touching and meaningful. Fr. Roby Adappoor anchored the programme and Fr. Jose Palakeel proposed the vote of thanks. The whole jubilee inauguration programme was very simple but elegant. A good number of priests and sisters from neighbouring communities and parishes, neighbours, benefactors, Santhome Fellowship members and well- wishers witnessed to this historic celebration. 2. Inaugural Address of the Major Archbishop Missionary Society of St Thomas (MST) is one of the most cherished pastoral projects of Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the first Bishop of Palai. Though there may be several founding members, there is only one founder: Mar Sebastian Vayalil of happy memory, a great visionary who accomplished a historical mission. He was well aware of the missionary character that the Syro-Malabar Church had ever maintained and which flourished during the latter half of the twentieth century. This Church during nineteen fifties, sixties and seventies sent a number of missionaries to the Latin dioceses outside Kerala. The eparchy of Palai was one of the eparchies that sent the most number of missionaries. Having reflected this overflow of missionaries from the Syro- Malabar Church, the question arose why this church cannot have its own missionary activities. As a result of this reflection the MST was born. Ever since its inception, the Society has contributed a lot to

MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 09 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes

the growth of the missionary vision in the Syro-Malabar Church. Not only the activities of the MST but also the missionary witness of the Eparchy of Ujjain are worthy of mention in this context. I am glad to say that the MST, through its three mission regions, St. Paul’s Region in Ujjain, St. Thomas Region in Mandya, St. Alphonsa Region in Sangli and one delegation in Delhi, has contributed considerably in the fields of evangelization, pastoral care, general education, special education, health care, empowerment of the differently abled, rehabilitation and so on. MST carries out its mission through these various apostolic activities in view of creating a harmonious, value based society, transforming the society to establish the Kingdom of God. By sending so many missionaries to different parts of India and abroad, the Missionary Society has always been and is still in the forefront by providing pastoral care to the Syro-Malabar migrant communities. I gratefully acknowledge the effective and active leadership that Bishop Sebastian Vadakel MST is giving to the Commission for Evangelization and Pastoral Care of the Migrants, as its present Chairman. MST collaborates very actively also with the various eparchies in and outside Kerala by lending services of its priests. Furthermore, the Major Archiepiscopal Curia too gets the service of the MST fathers in different ways. Presently Fr Joseph Pulavelil is serving as Secretary to Bishop Raphael Thattil, the Apostolic Visitator for India and in this capacity he is also coordinating

10 MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes the Syro-Malabar mission activities. In this context we must be aware that our Church is not yet fully granted with the rightful provisions the Second Vatican Council had envisaged fifty three years ago. Even though the Council Fathers taught, “Means should be taken therefore in every part of the world for the protection and advancement of all the individual Churches and, to this end, there should be established parishes and a special hierarchy where the spiritual good of the faithful demands it” (OE, 4), we know well that there are still a number of places in various parts of India and in the Gulf Countries, where our migrant faithful are not well provided with the pastoral care with proper jurisdiction of our own Church sui iuris. Right from the very beginning MST missionaries, by giving due priority, had been actively engaged in the field of school education. A good number of the schools in the Eparchy of Ujjain were started by the MST priests who were also instrumental in starting schools in many other dioceses. Now the Society has its own educational institutions as well as many non- formal education centres in the missions. MST’s educational apostolate is now active in the African country of Tanzania too. The contributions of this Society of priests in the social field are praiseworthy. Care and rehabilitation of the differently abled persons, rehabilitation of the HIV/AIDS affected and infected people and their families, medical and psychological support to the mentally ill, family counselling, child centred activities, old age homes, providing food to the needy, shelter to the homeless are some of the important ministries that the MST carries out in view of creating a harmonious and value based society. I now recollect my visit to the Sangli Mission in the month of February 2015, on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee. The missionary zeal of the priests, sisters and lay people who work there with one heart and mind still remains live in my memory. It was a unique experience for me to be an eye witness of the wonderful missionary apostolate that the MST priests undertake also in other parts of our country. The Communication ministry of the MST also deserves special mention. The Society does a lot of effective service in this filed. The

MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 11 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes

IMPACT (Initiatives for Missionary Pastoral Animation and Communication Theology) functioning at Thevackal, Ernakulam, is doing a lot by organizing workshops and seminars on mission and pastoral communication for children and adults. I am glad to acknowledge the pioneering leadership given by Fr Jose Palakeel MST, the present assistant Director General, to start the Syro- Malabar Church Internet Mission. The SMCIM is now running very well under the efficient leadership of Fr Joby Maprakavil MST.

The Society has contributed to create a mission culture in the Syro-Malabar Church. The Ruhalaya Seminary in Ujjain is forming priests with special missionary outlook. There have been studies on Mission theology and many of the MST fathers have written research papers on mission. Now it is up to all concerned to accept and foster the Society as a missionary power house for the Syro-Malabar Church as a whole. I do appreciate and congratulate the Directors General, presently Fr Kurian Ammanathukunnel, and the priests who have given effective leadership to the Society in the past 50 years. The Society has also produced two missionaries in the Episcopal Service: Late Bishop Mar John Perumattam, the first Director General and the first Bishop of Ujjain and Mar Sebastian Vadakel, the present Bishop of Ujjain. The name of Fr Joseph Maliparampil, one of the founding members of MST, is to be specially mentioned in an occasion like

12 MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes this for the missionary zeal with which he has worked for the founding of Cherupushpa Mission League and the promotion of so many vocations to priesthood and religious life. I also specially acknowledge the person of Fr Sebastian Thuruthel MST, who was my teacher in the Major Seminary. The Syro-Malabar Church has recently honoured him with the title Vaidikaratnam. The Vatican Council II, in its decree on the mission activity of the church teaches, “The pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature, since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit that she draws her origin, in accordance with the decree of God the Father” (AG, n. 2). Christ “founded His Church as the sacrament of salvation and sent His Apostles into all the world just as He Himself had been sent by His Father” (AG, n.5). Blessed Pope Paul VI, in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, wrote: “Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize, that is to say,

in order to preach and teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God, and to perpetuate Christ’s sacrifice in the Mass, which is the memorial of His death and glorious resurrection” (EN, n. 14). The Pope continues, “Evangelization is for no one, an individual and isolated act; it is one that is deeply ecclesial. When the most obscure preacher, catechist or pastor in the most distant land preaches the Gospel, gathers his little community together or administers a sacrament, even alone, he is carrying out an ecclesial act, and his action is certainly attached to the evangelizing activity of the whole Church by institutional relationships, but also

MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 13 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes

by profound invisible links in the order of grace. This presupposes that he acts not in virtue of a mission which he attributes to himself or by a personal inspiration, but in union with the mission of the Church and in her name” (EN 60). Thinking in this line we have to say that the individual missionary preaches in the name of the Church, not in his or her name. Let us continue to exercise all our ministries in the Church as ecclesial acts which build up the church. Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium says, “Though it is true that this mission demands great generosity on our part, it would be wrong to see it as a heroic individual undertaking, for it is first and foremost the Lord’s work, surpassing anything which we can see and understand. Jesus is “the first and greatest evangelizer”. In every activity of evangelization, the primacy always belongs to God, who has called us to cooperate with him and who leads us on by the power of his Spirit. (n. 12) Regarding new Evangelization also Pope Francis has his appeal: “we cannot forget that evangelization is first and foremost about preaching the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus Christ or who

have always rejected him. Many of them are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning to see his face, even in countries of ancient Christian tradition. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel. Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone. Instead of seeming to impose new obligations, they should appear as people who wish to share their joy, who point to a horizon of beauty and who invite others to a delicious banquet. It is not by proselytizing that the Church grows, but “by attraction” (ibid n. 13).

14 MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes

Evangelization of the poor is another important emphasis in the teaching of Pope Francis. “Evangelize the poor: this is the mission of Jesus; this is also the mission of the Church and of all the baptized in the Church. To be a Christian and to be a missionary is the same thing,” the Pope said on Jan. 24, 2016 to the people gathered in Saint Peter’s Square. In the same speech the Pope continued: “What does it mean to evangelize the poor? It means to be close to them, to serve them, to free them from oppression, and all this in the name and with the Spirit of Christ, because he is the Gospel of God, he is the mercy of God, and he is the liberation of God.” The Pope also says that everyone needs to be evangelized, both the evangelizer and the one who hears him. In his angelus address on January 26, 2014, the Pope said, “Jesus teaches us that the Good News, which he brings, is not reserved to one part of humanity, it is to be communicated to everyone”. With the new emphases in the vision of evangelization proposed by the magisterium, the Church has taken equally new approaches in the mission of evangelization and I appeal to the Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle to embark on this new challenge and give the Syro-Malabar Church and the Church in India a new missionary orientation. You have to take up researches and studies in your houses of academics and practical approaches in your mission fields. This is a great challenge, but you can do it. May God give you through His Spirit all the strength you need for this purpose! With these words let me declare the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Missionary Society of St Thomas inaugurated. 3. Golden Jubilee Thanksgiving Mass and Celebration in Mumbai [Reported by Fr Rony Alencherry] A day to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Missionary Society of Saint Thomas the Apostle in Mumbai was solemnised on 23rd March 2017 at Santhome Public School, Mira Road. The presence of the MSTs in this ancient geographical region of the Indian Christianity (Kalyana and the surrounding areas) has been there since 1976, well before the inception of the Diocese of Kalyan (in 1988), when the

MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 15 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes

then Syro-Malabar Hierarchy had sent Fr Sebastian Thuruthel to Mumbai for migrants’ pastoral care, and he was in Mumbai for three years. Subsequently in 1984 Fr George Kavukatt was sent to Pune by the then Syro-Malabar Hierarchy for the pastoral care of the migrants. Ever since, there has been an unbroken presence of the MSTs in this part of India. There have been some 30 MSTs who have given a share of their sweat of the toil and moil. Currently there are seven MSTs in Mumbai area: Frs Paul Painadath, C. D. Sebastian, Ashok Kollamkudy, Mathew Anithanam, Joby Pandampadathil (in Vadodara), Bibin Veranakunnel, and Rony Alencherry. We were blessed to have Mar Thomas Elavanal MCBS, Bishop of Kalyan, as the principal celebrant and Very Rev. Fr Kurian Ammanathukunnel, Director General of the MST, and Rev. Fr Jose Cheriampanatt, Local Regional Director of MST, as the main concelebrants in the Holy Qurbana. Other dignitaries present were Msgr. Emmanuel Kadankavil, V.G., Kalyan Diocese, Rev. Fr. Jose Kondoor and Rev. Fr Francis Kureeckal, Regional Directors of Ujjain and Mandya respectively, Rev. Sr Agnet Kizkakkel, SABS Provincial

of Ujjain, Fr Justin Kallely, Chancellor of Kalyan Diocese, Fr James Athikalam, Former Director General of MST, Fr George Kavukatt and Fr Mathew Moothasseril, Former Regional Directors of Sangli, Fr Jose Ayyankanal, Coordinator of MST Golden Jubilee Programmes, and Fr Davis Tharakan, Forane Vicar. Fr Paul Painadath prayerfully prepared the Eucharistic community with his words by giving an

16 MST WorldWorldWorld  Easter 2017 MST Golden Jubilee Programmes introduction to the Mass. This simple, homely and spiritual gathering witnessed the presence of a good number of priests of Kalyan Diocese, the MSTs who worked in Kalyan, Rev. Sisters who are associated with MSTs in Mumbai, and a good number of friends and well-wishers of MSTs here in Mumbai amounting to some three hundred in all.

After the solemn celebration of Holy Mass we had a formal gathering of an hour duration where Very Rev. Fr Director General, Bishop and Vicar General of Kalyan Diocese, and Provincial Superior of the SABS addressed the gathering highlighting the contribution of the MSTs in Kalyan Diocese. These addresses were sandwiched by MST Jubilee Anthem sung by Fr Ashok Kollamkudy and Margam Kali dance and songs of the students and teachers of Santhome School. Fr C. D. Sebastian, MST Coordinator in Mumbai, welcomed the dignitaries and friends of the MST, and Fr Mathew Anithanam gave the vote of thanks. This was followed by a very delicious lunch. The Jubilee Koinonia began at 11.00 a.m. with the Holy Mass and came to an end with the lunch by 2.00 p.m. Thus, the entire Jubilee gathering was short and sweet, simple but very elegant. Laus Deo!

Terrace Hall Due to shortage of space in our small hall for conducting any public meeting, we have made a terrace hall which can seat 330 people. The Central Council has helped us in the roofing of the terrace. It was done so mainly to protect the building from leaking.

Thank you, dear DG and Councillors! With the generous help of some of our fathers its floor has been tiled, a good stage has been made, and the hall has been electrified with good lighting and installation of fans. Hereafter all common celebrations will take place in the newly made terrace hall. Very many thanks to our generous fathers! c. Dormitory Becomes Small Rooms We had a real problem of shortage of rooms for accommodating our priests, scholars and guests in our house. Hence with the permission of the Central Council and with the generosity of one our friends the existing dormitory has been converted into small rooms. We have now six more rooms where eleven persons can be accommodated. Heartfelt thanks to our benefactors!

Ammanathukunnel, received official documents and renamed the centre into Karunyashram. The following developments took place ever since: During the four months period, 96 patients were treated at Karunyashram. Acute traumatic diseases like psoriasis, autism, hearing-impaired were among the major cases treated. The complete satisfaction of the treated people is actually the reward for the people who are behind. The patients who go back with optimism and

satisfaction turn to be the propagandists for the centre. Without any media advertisement the centre is known far and wide through the personal communication by the people who took the advantage of the treatment at our centre. The duration of treatment varies from 9 or more days depending on the gravity of the diseases. Under the guidance of Kunjettan, the chief consultant, two ayurvedic doctors, six therapists and several helpers are working hard for the centre. Ever since its inception the centre is known as an ashram because of the spiritual atmosphere. Kunjettan himself being a charismatic preacher carried out reflections, spiritual talks and meditations. Karunyashram continues the spiritual heritage. The cordial interactions among the inmates make the centre a family. The centre has a plot of 6.50 acres of land. It has a beautiful chapel, staying facilities for 18 people; still few more rooms are under construction and the construction of the new treatment centre will be over within a short period. Renovation of the priests’ quarters
