  • Kansas Legislators Message of Support and “Call to Action”
Kansas Legislators Message of Support and “Call to Action” We come together united as state legislators, republicans and democrats, state senators, and state representatives with this important message. We have reached a tipping point in the battle with COVID-19. If widespread community transmission continues to increase, our hospitals will be unable to meet the health care needs of Kansans across the state. We need people to change their behaviors and act fast to curb the spread because our status quo is not working and the implications are dire. This is not a COVID-19 crisis. This is a health care crisis. This holiday season, the greatest kindness you can give to your loved ones is doing your part to preserve their health. Wear your mask; wash your hands; stay home as much as possible; and keep your distance. Lives depend on it. As we enter the winter months, cases continue to rise and without action, this will continue. It is critical we reignite a sense of duty and ownership to do all we can to slow the spread of this virus to protect the health and safety of individuals and their loved ones. While we cannot change the hearts and minds of everyone, we each can take personal responsibility to make changes that will ultimately be lifesaving. We are united in our message: • While the news about vaccines gives us all hope, we must take steps NOW to bend the curve, curtail widespread community transmission and ultimately decrease hospitalizations so that care is available for all • We support the efforts across our region and Kansas to take additional steps to practice the pillars of infection prevention.

SOULES, AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS— NEW MEXICO, ALBUQUERQUE FEDERATION OF TEACHERS, JOLENE BEGAY, DANA ALLEN, NAOMI DANIEL, RON LAVANDOSKI, TRACEY BRUMLIK, CRYSTAL HERRERA, and ALLISON HAWKS, Plaintiffs, v. No. ____________________ NEW MEXICO PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT and SECRETARY-DESIGNEE HANNA SKANDERA in her official capacity, Defendants. COMPLAINT FOR DECLARATORY JUDGMENT AND PRELIMINARY AND PERMANENT INJUNCTIVE RELIEF COME NOW, Plaintiffs, by and through the undersigned, and for their Complaint against Defendants state as follows: I. INTRODUCTION 1. Plaintiffs bring this action against the Public Education Department and its Secretary-Designee, in her official capacity only, because Defendants have implemented a fundamental change in the manner in which teachers are evaluated in New Mexico. As detailed in this Complaint, that change is based on a fundamentally, and irreparably, flawed methodology which is further plagued by consistent and appalling data errors. As a result, teachers are being evaluated, and employment decisions made, based on a process that is, at best, arbitrary and capricious. 2. Due to the problems with the evaluation methodology detailed herein, Defendants have or are about to violate Plaintiffs’ constitutional rights, violate the statutory authority under which they operate, and violate other provisions of law. Plaintiffs seek declaratory and injunctive relief. II. PARTIES, JURISDICTION, AND VENUE 3. Plaintiff the Honorable Senator Mimi Stewart is the elected Senator from District 17 (Bernalillo County).

  • Weekly Legislative Digest
Louisiana Federation of Teachers Weekly Legislative Digest May 1, 2015 Steve Monaghan, President * Les Landon, Editor 2015 Regular Legislative Session Now available on the Web at http://la.aft.org Panel votes to silence public employees Despite the best arguments of teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public servants, the House Labor and Industrial Relations Committee approved a bill that will make it inconvenient for employees to join and maintain membership in the union or association of their choice. The purpose of HB 418 by Rep. Stuart Bishop (R-Lafayette) is to weaken unions like the Louisiana Federation of Teachers and Louisiana Association of Educators. These are the groups that have raised questions about, and led the opposition to, so-called “reforms” backed by big business that all too often result in the privatization of education and diminution of the teaching profession. HB 418 would revoke the right of public employees to pay their union or association dues through payroll deduction. Since local governments currently have the authority to grant payroll deduction, the bill is seen by school boards and others as legislative meddling in their prerogatives. The bill is the brainchild of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, which has been twisting the arms of lawmakers to force its passage. The big business lobby recruited the Koch brothers backed Americans for Prosperity to publicly promote the bill. It is an example of what columnist Stephanie Grace, in another context, called “an ugly yet ascendant strain in American politics, a willingness to use any means necessary, no matter what chaos ensues or who gets hurt.” The vitriol motivating the bill’s supporters was on full display when an amendment was proposed to exempt the teacher unions from its prohibitions.
