I had the chance to ask actor Michael Sheard some questions. He was the U-Boat captain in ' Raiders of the Lost Ark ' and Adolf Hitler in ' Last Crusade '. He also played with Harrison Ford in ' The Empire Strikes Back ' and ' Force Ten From Navarone '. Michael was born in the Scottish city of Aberdeen, the son of a minister of the kirk, Donald Marriot Perkins (Sheard was his mother's maiden name). He attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, leaving to do two years National Service in The Royal Air Force as an Aircraftsman. He has appeared on stage and screen, most notably in BBC Television's Grange Hill and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back as Mr. Maurice Bronson and Admiral Ozzel respectively. He has worked with some very famous actors and actresses such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir David Niven, Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Elliot Gould, Roger Moore, Jeremy Bullock, Stefanie Powers, Susan Tully, John Wayne, Todd Carty, Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Glenda Jackson MP, Sir Sean Connery and Harrison Ford. Michael is married to Ros Sheard whom he calls 'Dearly Beloved' and has three children. Ferbruary 04, 2003. 1. How did you get the parts in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and what do you think about your characters? -Question by Peter99- 2. A scene with you in Raiders of the Lost Ark was deleted. Why, and what exactly was it about? -Question by Peter99- 5. How would you compare the directing technique of Irvin Kershner, with whom you worked on The Empire Strikes Back, to that of Steven Spielberg? -Question by Toht- 6. Did you meet George Lucas and how much involved was he on set on the Empire Strikes Back and also on the Indy films? -Question by Toht- 7. What do you think about a fourth Indiana Jones movie and would you like to be in it again? -Question by Willie- 8. You also played with Harrison Ford in Force Ten From Navarone. So you did four movies with him (Indy1+3, Star Wars 5). Did you develop a certain friendship or something like that and are you still in contact with him, or the others. -Question by MolaRam- Many thanks for answering these questions. The entire Indiana Jones fan community and I thank you very much for your co-operation. Not everybody takes so much time to please his / her fans. It's a pleasure. By the way, I hate the word fan - it stands for fanatic and none of my many convention friends are fanatics. I call them Apps in my books - Appreciators! My sympathies to his family and friends. Simon Holden, Brierley Hill. I met Michael Sheard a couple of times here in Glasgow. He had more energy and spirit than most people half his age! His coffee mornings were legendary (with not much coffee present). Always had a wicked twinkle in his eye, a laugh and a kind word for his fans. One of the best Doctor Who guest actors - the new series won't be the same without him. He will be sorely missed. Alan Collinson, Glasgow. I met Michael about 6 years ago at a book signing in Fareham in WH Smiths. We had a very long chat about his career, life on Grange Hill and of course George Lucas. Simon McCombe, Bristol, England. Having met Michael twice, while working in his agent's office, I can honestly say he was a polite and jovial character who worked hard and enjoyed everything he did. Stephen Brennan, Lincoln. Michael Sheard was a fantastic man. Sci-fi conventions shall never be the same again. He will be sorely missed by everyone. Maria Larkin, Bridgend, South Wales. The force will be with you. Always. Michael Griffin, Cambridge, UK. I had the pleasure of meeting Michael at a Dr Who event several years ago. He was a terrific fellow. Grange Hill will never be the same without him. We'll miss the always comical toupee! Darren Ewen, Swindon, England. This article examines the reasons behind a Heroin policy shift that led to the introduction of mass media drug education in the mid 1980s. It focuses on two Drug education campaigns. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ ran in England, and ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ ran in Scotland. The campaigns Health education were different in tone, with ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ making use of fear and ‘shock horror’ tactics, whereas History of drug use ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ attempted to deliver a more positive health message. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ was criticised by many experts for its stigmatising approach. ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ was more favourably received, but both campaigns ran into difficulties with the wider public. The messages of these campaigns were appro priated and deliberately subverted by some audiences. This historical policy analysis points towards a complex and nuanced relationship between drug education campaigns and their audiences, which raises wider questions about health education and its ‘publics’. In April 1986, the cast of teen TV soap, Grange Hill, released a song wanted to be seen to take action on drugs, leading to the introduction of titled ‘Just say no’.

THE rCOLFOAlSf f I folk «r 1 No 57 October 1988 AD ASTRA PER ASPERA October 1988 COLFEIAN the Chronicles of Colfe's School and of the Old Colfeians' Association The Master, Richard Scriven, planting a tree on the occasion of the Leathersellers' cricket match, 26th June, 1988 following the opening of the new Preparatory School on 23rd June. Mr Scriven's father laid the Foundation Stone for the Main School Building in 1964. ISSN 0010-0670 COVER DESIGN With a change in the format of the Colfeian, it was felt appropriate to change also the design of the cover.'The design chosen for this year at least, emphasises continuity. It is the design used on every issue from vol.1 no.l in December 1900 until vol.17 no. 67 in December 1939. In those days the Colfeian was the magazine of the Old Colfeians, while from 1902 the school had its own magazine, Colfensia. In 1951 the two magazines combined, thus beginning the present sequence of the Colfeian. The original cover, now being re-used, was designed by Charles J. Folkard whose signature it bears. More on this eminent Old Colfeian appears on another page. For his design, Folkard drew the heraldic stone which hung over the entrance to Colfe's Almshouses in Lewisham, depicting the arms of Abraham Colfe and the Leathersellers' Company. As a result of the school's celebration of Folkard this year, which accompanied the acquisition of some of his original drawings, the stone itself has been re-discovered. Since the demolition of the almshouses, it has lain, albeit somewhat damaged and begrimed in the vaults of Manor House, Lee.

  • 1 an AGE of KINGS (BBC TV, 1960) Things Have Moved on in Fifty Years
1 AN AGE OF KINGS (BBC TV, 1960) BBC VIDEO 5 disc set; ISBN 1-4198-7901-4, Region 1 only Tom Fleming, Robert Hardy Things have moved on in fifty years. In 1960 (I was sixteen), we didn’t have a television, and I had to prevail upon my school-friends to let me cycle round to their houses every alternate Thursday to watch this series. 1 Now, I can sit in my armchair and watch it straight through on my computer on DVD, with sound coming through the headphones. I count An Age of Kings as the single most important cultural event in my entire life, more important even than being in Trevor Nunn’s first-ever Shakespeare production ( Hamlet ) the previous year. It taught me what Shakespeare was about, and I’ve never forgotten it. Over ten years ago, seeing that it was on at the NFT, I went down to see some odd bits. Approaching Michael Hayes, the director, I said, “What you did here provided me with the single most important cultural event of my life”. He looked at me suspiciously: “You seem a bit young to say that”, he said, and turned away. I went up to Peter Dews, the producer: “What you did here provided me with the single most important cultural event of my life” – “Good!” he grunted, and turned away. So much for the creative team. Were they really as boring as that in 1960? (In fact Dews died shortly after our brief chat.) Paul Daneman said in an accompanying NFT lecture that the cast spent every morning talking, and didn’t start rehearsals till after lunch.

  • Skins and the Impossibility of Youth Television
Skins and the impossibility of youth television David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays, can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. In 2007, the UK media regulator Ofcom published an extensive report entitled The Future of Children’s Television Programming. The report was partly a response to growing concerns about the threats to specialized children’s programming posed by the advent of a more commercialized and globalised media environment. However, it argued that the impact of these developments was crucially dependent upon the age group. Programming for pre-schoolers and younger children was found to be faring fairly well, although there were concerns about the range and diversity of programming, and the fate of UK domestic production in particular. Nevertheless, the impact was more significant for older children, and particularly for teenagers. The report was not optimistic about the future provision of specialist programming for these age groups, particularly in the case of factual programmes and UK- produced original drama. The problems here were partly a consequence of the changing economy of the television industry, and partly of the changing behaviour of young people themselves. As the report suggested, there has always been less specialized television provided for younger teenagers, who tend to watch what it called ‘aspirational’ programming aimed at adults. Particularly in a globalised media market, there may be little money to be made in targeting this age group specifically.
