It is multi-vallate with an enclosed area of c.10ha and lies just within Surrey, close to the present county boundary with Kent, and with that of East Sussex about 1 mile to the south (figure 1). The hill is at the end of a ridge of Ardingley Sandstone with Grinstead Clay to the north-west and Wadhurst Clay to the south-east. Grinstead, Wadhurst and Weald Clay all contain bands of clay ironstone potentially available for iron production. Also found in Weald Clay are thin (5cm) bands of ‘Cyrena’ limestone, a fossiliferous stone formed and deposited in deep-water conditions during the Cretaceous period. -

Geology of the London Basin
Geology of the London Basin - 100 Million Years in the Making on 16 November 2018 Mr Philip Laurie first showed a geological map of London produced in 1848 by Stanford – the first of its kind. The Earth is 46,000 million years old, so much had happened before the London area made an appearance. The geological history of London started a hundred million years ago. For 60% of that time it has been under ice, causing sea levels to fall. He lives near the Ravensbourne, which rises south of the North Downs, runs through them and north to the Thames, emerging at Deptford Creek. How did it, and other rivers such as the Wandle, Darent and Medway, come to flow through the North Downs? At one time it was thought that there were faults in the chalk which gave them a way through, but this has been discounted. The Weald is now low lying, but when tectonic plate movement, mainly caused by Africa colliding with Europe, raised not only the Alps but buckled strata in northern Europe, a Wealden ridge was formed. An underlying chalk stratum buckled with high ridges at the South and North Downs and a dip under the Weald, squeezing up the soft sedimentary rocks between them to form the Ridge. Fast flowing streams from the ridge soon eroded channels in the chalk on their way to the sea. The ridge has since been eroding away (reducing river flows). They are ancient rivers. London is over a layer of cretaceous chalk about 40m down, which in turn is over gault clay. -

Planning application TM/10/2029 Proposed westerly extension to Hermitage Quarry, Hermitage Lane, Aylesford, Kent (MR. 717 556) Recommendation: Permission be granted subject to conditions. The existing Hermitage Quarry lies within the strategic gap between Allington, to the east, the village of Aylesford, to the north and Barming Heath to the south. It forms part of 230ha of the Hermitage Farm Estate which comprises agricultural land and woodland as well as the quarry itself. The existing quarry has a purpose built access onto Hermitage Lane (B2246), leading to the A20 and M20 at junction 5. 2. Operational since 1990, the quarry is currently operating within an eastern extension area permitted under planning permission reference TM/05/2784. As part of the overall working plan, the consented phased working and restoration scheme requires the operator to work the site in an east to south direction, with final permitted reserves being worked in the permitted western extension (reference TM/02/2782) before infilling and restoration of the final phase which is currently occupied by the plant site area. -

Executive summary Background 1.1 The current Commons management plan was adopted in 2005. At the Conservators’ December 2015 meeting it was agreed that the Freehold Tenants should work with the Warden toward a new ten- year management plan, beginning by commissioning expert advice on: habitats and species conservation; ponds and wetlands; rock outcrops; and trees and woodland preservation and management. A series of expert reviews was carried out over the summer of 2016, as follows: • Habitat management, focusing on grassland and heathland – the Kent High Weald Partnership • Trees - The Living Forest • Rocks – Freehold Tenants with guidance from Natural England • Ponds – Calumma Ecological Services 1.2 The experts commented favourably from a conservation/ecological perspective on the Commons management regime, and did not suggest any radical change to current practice. They offered several improvement recommendations for consideration, most of which have resource implications. These were summarised in an interim report to the Conservators in September and a draft final report in December 2016 together with a summary of the projects to be funded by the Freehold Tenants and the Friends in 2017. -

WORSSAM and TIM TATTON-BROWN The name Kentish Rag, or Ragstone, suggests a building stone suitable only for rough walling purposes, a view expressed, for example, by Howe (1910, 264), who wrote of Kentish Rag: 'It has been extensively used in churches in the Home Counties in the form of random and coursed work; it cannot be dressed . .' From earlier periods than Howe's time of writing there are, however, many examples of dressed stonework as well as of ashlar and window tracery in Kentish Rag. It is one purpose of this paper to draw attention to the varied ways in which the stone has been used from time to time. Kentish Rag varies in lithology along its outcrop, such that it is possible in the case of many buildings to deduce the location from which their stone has been derived. Certain Middlesex churches (Robinson and Worssam 1990) provide instances. The paper, therefore, starts with an account of the geology of Kentish Rag. Descriptions are also included of three types of stone with some resemblance to Kentish Rag: the well-known Reigate stone, from Surrey; Folkestone stone, which is rarely recognised as a building stone; and Thanet Beds sandstone from east Kent, so little regarded that it has no familiar local name. THE GEOLOGY OF KENTISH BUILDING STONES Kentish Rag occurs in the Hythe Beds formation, which is part of the Lower Greensand, a group of formations of Lower Cretaceous age (see Table 1). -
