Roe Jan Brown-released to fight another day. Trout Fishing in Hillsdale July, 2012 Guy Winig, member Hillsdale Conservation Advisory Council Trout are our canaries in a coalmine. They are an excellent indicator of stream health, requiring clean, cold, well-oxygenated water to thrive. Without very high quality surface waters, trout just cannot survive. Hillsdale is fortunate to have several miles of trout streams including the Roeliff Jansen Kill, Taconic Creek, Agawamuck Creek and Green River with numerous smaller and unnamed tributaries contributing to them. Our streams and their residents endure many perils including natural flood and drought cycles as well as man made impacts like pollution, invasive species, barriers and over –fishing. Erosion adds silt that smothers aquatic food sources and gravel spawning beds. Introduced Didymo algae (a.k.a. ‘Rock Snot’) now found in the Green River, also chokes the streambed. Loss of vegetation exposes water to heating and eliminates important breeding, feeding and cover areas for trout. Readers may recall the massive fish kill that resulted from the release of manure into the Roe Jan in the 90’s or tales of unscrupulous ‘sportsmen’ using small explosives and chlorine to kill all the fish in a segment of stream. Maybe the most harmful and insidious are non-point sources of pollution such as chemicals, fertilizers and heated runoff from parking lots, roads, roofs, crop fields and lawns. In 2009 and 2010, members of the community with help from the Columbia-Greene chapter of Trout Unlimited and the N.Y.S.D.E.C. Trees for Tributaries program planted several hundred small trees and shrubs on the banks and flood plain of the Roe Jan Kill through the Roe Jan Park in an effort to stabilize banks, introduce vegetative cover and provide shade to maintain cool stream temperatures. -

Oyster kills from “poison water” draining off of marshes are said to be caused by plankton bloom. Small “jubilees” are said to be caused by localized blooms and one of these is described as it occurred. In November 1938, Dr. Margaretha Brongersma-Sanders of billions of Chaetoceras sp., a common open sea diatom. -

Our objective is to highlight the fundamentally speaker-hearer-oriented nature of many of these elements, and to offer a formal perspective on their use. We also aim to highlight the value of pursuing more detailed investigations of these and other perspectival elements employed in SAE and other languages spoken in South Africa. E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] 2Corresponding author Abstract Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), a widespread tropical echinoid and key herbivore in shallow water environments is cur- rently expanding in the Mediterranean Sea. It was introduced by unknown means and first observed in southern Turkey in 2006. From there it spread eastwards to Lebanon (2009) and westwards to the Aegean Sea (2014). Since late 2016 spo- radic sightings of black, long-spined sea urchins were reported by recreational divers from rock reefs off the Israeli coast. Numerous attempts to verify these records failed; neither did the BioBlitz Israel task force encounter any D. setosum in their campaigns. Finally, a single adult specimen was observed on June 17, 2017 in a deep rock crevice at 3.5 m depth at Gordon Beach, Tel Aviv. Although the specimen could not be recovered, spine fragments sampled were enough to genet- ically verify the visual underwater identification based on morphology. Sequences of COI, ATP8-Lysine, and the mito- chondrial Control Region of the Israel specimen are identical to those of the specimen collected in 2006 in Turkey, unambiguously assigning the specimen to D. -

An environmentally literate public results in increased stewardship of the natural environment. Many organizations are working to increase the understanding of students, teachers, and the general public about the environment in general, and the oceans and coasts in particular. The following are just some of the large-scale and regional initiatives which seek to provide standards and guidance for our educational efforts and form partnerships to reach broader audiences. The shoreline proposed for beach maintenance extends approximately 1,700 linear feet from the west end of the Kuhio Beach crib walls to the existing groin between the Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikiki hotels. Since 1985 the shoreline has been chronically eroding and receding at an average annual rate of 1.5 feet. The purpose of the project is to restore and enhance the recreational and aesthetic benefits provided by the beach, as well as maintaining lateral access along the shore. The proposed project will include the following primary components: The recovery of up to 24,000 cubic yards (cy) of sand from deposits located 1,500 to 3,000 feet offshore in a water depth of about 10 to 20 feet. Pumping the sand to an onshore dewatering site to be located in an enclosed basin within the east Kuhio Beach crib wall. Transport of the sand along the shore and placement to the design beach profile. The removal of two old deteriorated concrete sandbag groin structures located at the east end of the project area. -

Abstract: Phyllodial pores and the identification of two subspecies of sea urchins in Mexico: Meoma ventri- cosa grandis (Pacific) and Meoma ventricosa ventricosa (Atlantic). The genus Meoma inhabits Mexican waters and is represented by the subspecies Meoma ventricosa grandis in the Pacific and Meoma ventricosa ventricosa in the Atlantic. Both subespecies are morphologically similar. We studied the morphological differences between Meoma ventricosa grandis and Meoma ventricosa ventricosa, specifically in the patterns of phyllodial pore pairs and kind of sediments where they live. The number of pores differs among subspecies until M. ventricosa grandis reaches 110 mm of total lenght. The difference in the number of phyllodial pores can be an adaptation to the size of silt grain. Rev. Biol. Trop. 56 (Suppl. 3): 13-17. Epub 2009 January 05.
