Inside: Kristallnacht 75th Anniversary Fall Youth Events Celebrations RABBI EZRING’S CALENDAR COLUMN Service Times Candle Lighting Times Friday 6:15pm Nov. 1 6:11pm Two new Jewish population surveys were just made public. Saturday 9:30am Nov. 8 5:05pm One, the American Jewish Nov. 15 5:00pm Population Project estimates that there are between Nov. 22 4:56pm 4,091,400 and 4,327,900 Nov. 29 4:54pm Jewish adults in the United Minyan Times States. The other, the Pew Research Center’s Religion and Public Life Project, estimates that there are 5.3 million Jewish adults Sunday: 9:00am, 5:30pm and 1.3 million Jewish children in America. The Pew Survey Monday-Thursday: 7:30pm describes a Jewish community in the USA as stable, hovering around the same numbers as the last two decades’ surveys. In Thursday: 7:30am contrast, the other shows significant shrinkage. Saturday: 5:30pm Is our community shrinking rapidly or are we maintaining numerical stability? The answer may be found in whom we consider to be a Jewish adult. However, the real import in the WEEKLY EVENTS studies may not be in the number of Jews in America today, Visit our online Calendar (www.templeisraelnc.org) for but what we find within the American Jewish community. Most a complete listing of upcoming events alarming is that the data seems to tell us that we are losing the soul of American Jewry. The New York Times reports that 2/3 of Tuesdays American Jews do not belong to a synagogue, ¼ do not believe Tuesday With Torah, 9:30am in God and 1/3 had a Christmas tree in their home last year. Temple Religious School, 4:45pm Surprisingly, 34% also said you could be Jewish if you believe Wednesdays that Jesus was the messiah. Over 20% of our population does Torah Sparks, 12:30pm not have a religion. Thursdays The key to addressing the important issues raised in the two Adult B’Nai Mitzvah Class, 6:30pm recent studies is to revisit our core mission. Census numbers will become meaningless if our people stop being Jewish. It Saturdays appears that as a community we may have lost our way by Jr. Congregation, Mini Minyan, 10:00am forgetting our purpose. The Torah introduced ethical monotheism Sundays to the world. The system of ethics, morality, and faith that is Temple Israel Religious School, 10:00am presented in the Torah forms the foundation of the ethical lives of the three Abrahamic faiths. We cannot exist without the religious foundation of the Hebrew bible expressed through the teachings of the rabbis. CALENDAR NOTICE Temple Israel strives to ensure that the calendar While Philosopher and Educator Martin Buber wrote of the information is complete and accurate. Can we reclaim the Jewish soul of our people? Are we really proud of our history and ancestry? Our numbers are not important if we lose our Jewish soul forged at Mt. Sinai. If you are interested in exploring how we as a congregation can ensure a meaningful American Judaism for generations to come, I invite you to contact me at [email protected]. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Barry Bobrow This year features an extremely rare event for American Jews – The first day of Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving on 11/28/2013. This means that the first TEMPLE ISRAEL STAFF night of Hanukkah is actually the night before Thanksgiving. This remarkable confluence has never happened before...and Rabbi Murray Ezring (704) 362-2796, ext. 106 according to all of the articles I found on the internet it may [email protected] never happen again. Rabbi Noam Raucher (704) 362-2796, ext. 106 While a Thanksgiving celebration in the Fall pre-dates [email protected] American independence, Thanksgiving was first established Cantor Elias Roochvarg (704) 362-2796, ext. 108 as a national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, [email protected] with the date set as the fourth Thursday in November. This means that the latest it could ever be is 11/28. As we all Anne Weiss, Executive Director (704) 362-2796, ext. 104 know, the Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar. Without any [email protected] adjustments, because the lunar calendar is 355 days and the Rabbi Tracy Klirs, TIRS Education Director solar calendar is 365 days, the would cycle (704) 944-6786 through the year, much as Ramadan does in the Islamic [email protected] world. Centuries ago some very wise scholars established a complicated formula for correcting this discrepancy, which Ariel Krusch, Youth Director (704) 944-6816 involves adding an additional month of Adar during Hebrew [email protected] “Leap Years”. This Jewish calendar involves 7 additional Kara Tanenbaum, Events and Meetings Manager months added somewhat irregularly on a repeating 19 year (704) 362-2796, ext 103 cycle. We are currently in the 17th year of that cycle, and [email protected] because of the irregular nature of the additional months, our holidays this year are falling at their earliest point during the cycle. TEMPLE ISRAEL 2013-2014 BOARD OF TRUSTEES So Thanksgiving and Hanukkah are both on cycles, but the Barry Bobrow, President cycles are very different. The last time Hanukkah coincided Lynne Sheffer, 1st Vice President with the fourth Thursday in November was 1861, two years Adam Petricoff, 2nd Vice President before Thanksgiving became the law of the land. This David Rosenthal – Treasurer means that in fact Thanksgiving and Hanukkah have never overlapped before. Mike Eisner – Secretary Stuart Breidbart – Immediate Past President This exercise gets even more complicated. Despite the brilliance of the ancient scholars who invented this adjustment system, the Jewish calendar is very slowly Michael Abadi Michael Koss getting out of sync with the solar calendar, at a rate of Brian Bernhardt Beth Listhaus approximately 4 days per 1000 years. While this is not bad Irving Bienstock Allan Oxman for a many centuries old calendar, it makes the probability Teresa Brenner Nicholas Rose of the Thanksgiving/Hanukkah overlap even more remote. Dedee Cygler Frank Rosen According to some brilliant mathematicians, and using some logic that is too complicated for me to understand, without Peggy Gartner Stacey Shuler any adjustments it will be approximately 77,000 years before Margi Goldstein Steven Starr this confluence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving occurs again. Rael Gorelick Liz Winer I hope that all of you thoroughly enjoy your early Hanukkah, and that you and your families enjoy the truly unique Kol Yisrael is published monthly for members and friends of experience of watching Thanksgiving football games and the community. MISSION STATEMENT Temple Israel is a welcoming, egalitarian, and progressive Conservative Jewish congregation that fosters study, spirituality, worship, mitzvot, human well-being, and fellowship in order to further Jewish ideals, identity and community.

JOIN US! Temple Israel will commemorate the th 75 ANNIVERSARY of KRISTALLNACHT NIGHT of the BROKEN GLASS Sunday, November 10, 2013. 7pm at Temple Israel. On this date, in 1938, Nazi Germany co-oriented an attack on the Jewish people in Germany and German controlled countries. Kristallnacht was the beginning of Hitler’s effort to rid Europe of all Jews.

Throughout the night, we will explore the theme “Keeping the Message Alive” Our honorees are four survivors and one liberator who have dedicated many hours to telling their stories at schools, churches and civic groups throughout North Carolina: Irving Bienstock, Suly Chenkin, Susan Cernyak-Spatz, Henry Hirschman, and Jessie Oxendine

Our speakers will include Rabbi Murray Ezring, Reverend Dr. Russ Dean and Reverend Amy Jacks-Dean, Ministers of Park Road Baptist Church. Eugene Kavadlo (principal clarinetist) & Ali Kavadlo (principal violist, emeritus) of the Charlotte Symphony will perform music of the Holocaust, with accompaniment by the Motet Choir of Myers Park Baptist Church.A video, produced by Steve Kahn, will profile our honorees. The commemoration will honor those who perished in the Holocaust and those members of our community who survived. Funds raised by this program will go towards furthering Holocaust education.
