Chapter 1 Introduction perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION A. Background of Research Since women become the minority and live under male supremacy, in the society there is a feminist ideology and movement that develops. The primary goal of feminism are freeing woman from the “male-values” (Willis, 1984). Feminists are against male’s view that said “the appreciation to woman is on their body not on the function of their body”. The feminist ideology and movement happen to answer the challenge of dominant male culture that sees women only in sexual terms. (Fernandes, 1991). The first wave, second wave and even post-colonial feminist have different shape of movement. After the booming of second wave feminism, post- colonial feminism as known as the third world feminism takes a place as a new form of feminist movement. This movement is different from the previous movement that just focuses on women in America, post-colonial feminism is a movement of women in third world country. This movement happened because the second wave feminism did not representing women in all country. Second wave feminism assessed just represents and focuses to feminist of the mainstream. Although post-colonial feminism firstly happen in the third world country, however, it spread out and become the new form of post-feminism, not only just in the third world country but in all country. There also many people, that speaks their idea about post-colonial feminism through their written and work. Many commit to user theories and studies about post-colonial feminism also established in order to give 1 perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id2 knowledge about post-colonial movement and ideology. In addition, there are many medias, such as books, pictures, even music that give a representation about the post-colonial movement. We can say that this era is the era of female singers, as we know there are many female singers that become popular singer in the society and get many music awards. If in the 90s we have Madonna as the popular female singers in that era, in this era we have Katy Perry: female singer who was born on October 25, 1984, started her career as former Christian folk singer and then turned into the pop singer. On her first years career she used name Katy Hudson and released her album on 2001 but this album wasn’t successful. In 2004, she became the vocalist of The Matrix production team and recorded some songs with Ballard, through her sessions with Ballard, Perry was heard by Capitol Music executive, Jason Flom who then agreed to sign her in Spring 2007. However, her career did not fully take off until the release of her next single, "I Kissed a Girl," this single reached the top of the charts during the summer of 2008. And her success was followed by her debut album,” One of the Boys” that became Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her song also earned Perry a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. From that time, she becomes the female singer that has big influence in American music industry. But, not only in America itself, Katy Perry also conquered international music industries that is proven by her fame in other countries. Katy Perry achieved many awards for her songs and her music videos. The newest award that she achieved is Favorite Music Videos in People’s Choice commit to user Award and Video of the Year and Best Female Music Videos in MTV Video perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id3 Music Awards. She got double awards as Favorite Music Videos because her two music videos “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” and “E.T” won that category. From Videos of the Year and Best Female music videos, her music video “Firework” has won the categories. From the awards that she achieved we know that she is the female singer that has big influence in the society and her two music videos “E.T” and “Firework” become the most influential music videos in the society. Then, in 2012 also she released her new music video “Wide Awake”, fromwhich the biography from Katy Perry’s life was taken, which steal many attention from public. Since the first album, Katy always made the music video for most of her songs. Her music video is always different from one to another. She always tries to give a new concept that is different for her each music video. From a playfull and naughty concept to the uplifting, heartbreakingly wistful and spiritual concept are delivered in Katy Perry’s music video (http://www.katyperry.com/bio/). Her first album, One of The Boys, still delivers the naughty side of Katy and in this album she still shows her femininity in her music video. In the second album, in some music videos that are released first, the naughty and playfull concept that deliver the post-modern life is still used in her music video. However, in her music video, such as Firework, which is a self-empowerment sung by Katy, and all video that are released after it, the naughty Katy is transformed into a woman that try to become an inspiration to other. Moreover, all videos that are released after that seem to be representations of women’s life in this era. Katy Perry’s music videos are no longer just an entertainment, but also become an inspiration commit to user perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id4 and representation of what happen within women in society. For that reason, Katy Perry can be categorized as a post-feminist singer. Katy Perry always gives something new to her audience. It is proven by her three music videos that have different concept and theme. Each of music videos describes Perry as different character, but still all of these had become the favorite music videos and always on chart. From the fantasy concept of “Wide Awake” until the science-fiction theme of “E.T”, Katy Perry’s music videos can deliver the new story and concept of music videos for American society. From her success, Katy Perry can be assumed as a figure of the female power in this era. She can be a figure of the post-colonial feminist and her music videos can be the representation of post-colonial feminist image that exists in American society. For that reason, this thesis will analyze how Katy Perry’s three music videos “Firework”, “E.T”, and “Wide Awake” construct the women image and power in the society. B. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Kesha accused Dr Luke of ‘raping Katy Perry’ in series of text messages to Lady Gaga Rebecca Lewis Wednesday 13 Jun 2018 9:22 pm Kesha accuses Luke of raping Katy (Picture: Getty) New court documents have revealed that Kesha has accused Dr Luke of ‘raping’ Katy Perry in a series of text messages to Lady Gaga. Luke has denied the claims. The documents in the ongoing case between Kesha and Dr Luke were filed in New York as part of the on-going legal battle between the music producer, real name Lukas Gottwald, and the singer. Obtained by The Blast, the documents – filed by Luke’s team – read: ‘On February 26, 2016 [Kesha] sent a text message to Stefani Germanotta p/k/a/ Lady Gaga which repeated [Kesha’s] false claim that [Luke] had raped her.’ ‘[Kesha] also falsely asserted that [Luke] had also raped Kathryn Hudson p/k/a/ Katy Perry.’ and that, ‘following this text message conversation, and with [Kesha’s] encouragement, [Lady Gaga] spread negative messages about [Luke] in the press and on social media’. Lukasz Gottwald (L), better known as Dr. Luke, and Kesha (R) in 2011 (Picture: Reuters) Perry has been deposed in the case and gave a written statement but her comments have not been revealed. Perry has never publicly accused Dr. Luke of any sexual misconduct. She previously admitted she had chosen to no longer work with him, simply using the phrase: ‘I had to leave the nest’. Katy Perry (Picture: Rex) Kesha dropped all sexual assault claims in her lawsuit against Dr Luke in August 2016 after years of controversy and legal battles.

  • Movie Review: Katy Perry: Part of Me
Movie Review: Katy Perry: Part of Me By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK – An interesting sociological study could be made that less than a decade separated the Billboard chart appearances of the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and the Raspberries’ “Go All the Way.” Fast forward to 2008 and the campily costumed central figure of the concert film “Katy Perry: Part of Me” (Paramount) was having a breakthrough hit with a ditty called “I Kissed a Girl.” Sensing a trend? Suggestive and even blatantly sexual lyrics are nothing new in pop music of course. The issue here is the youthful following Perry attracts: On screen at least, her fans seem to range from toddlers on up, but with a heavy concentration in the pre- and early teens. Yet the sight of Perry imploring an imaginary young man of her fancy to “Show Me Your Peacock” is one that parents will almost certainly find unsuitable for their kids. Add to that a strongly reinforced message promoting individualism without limit – and at least implying acceptance of a gay lifestyle – and it would seem imperative to mark these mildly entertaining but overlong proceedings, helmed by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, as off limits to the target demographic. None of which is to deny that the Perry who emerges in this profile has her moral strong points. Her generous interaction with her star-struck admirers reaches a poignant climax when she fulfills the titular mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation for one ailing but delightedly dazzled boy. We also see her making apparently extraordinary – though, sadly, unsuccessful – efforts to salvage her short-lived marriage to British comedian and actor Russell Brand.

When it came time to make her exhilarating second album “Teenage Dream,” Katy found herself increasingly drawn back home to Santa Barbara, Calif. Back to where they knew her before she became a superstar. Before she kissed a girl and liked it. And, certainly, before she sold 5 million copies of her Capitol Records blockbuster, “One of the Boys.” “I love the vibe that Santa Barbara gives off and I wanted to really tap into the purity of my childhood and that feeling,” says the two-time Grammy nominated singer. “It was really fun to get away and walk into the studio with no make-up on.” “Teenage Dream,” out Aug. 24, will move you, both emotionally and physically. “When I was touring, I wanted people to dance more,” Katy says. “So I wrote an album that made people move, yet didn’t sacrifice the story substance that I had on the last record.” The album, whose producers include Max Martin, Tricky Stewart, Stargate, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells, is a glorious evolution from “One of The Boys,” It showcases an artist who dares us to join her as she experiences every facet of life. 17 is all in “I’m giving everyone the full spectrum on this record,” Katy says. “You’re getting the sugary sweet, but you’re also getting the ‘Oh my goodness, she had to sit down for a minute and let some things off her chest’.” Fun first single, “California Gurls,” declared by Entertainment Weekly as “unforgettable,” is the undeniable summer anthem of 2010.

A mentor in every sense of the word, Jodie Hertzog embodies the very nature of adviser; her council was very much appreciated through the course of my study. v ABSTRACT “Girl Power!” is a message that parents raising young women in today’s media- saturated society should be able to turn to with a modicum of relief from the relentlessly harmful messages normally found within popular music. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits.
