His second score from 8 yards out gave the Bears their first lead at 10/6/45 W 27-14 H 17-13 with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. 10/26/46 L 6-20 A 11/8/47 W 13-7 H 10/23/48 W 21-0 A Washington's Peyton Henry connected on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter – including a 10/22/49 W 21-7 H career-long 49-yarder with 2:05 to play – to put the Huskies back on top. But Cal quarterback Chase 11/4/50 W 14-7 A Garbers, who finished with modest numbers but also played a turnover-free game, engineered a late 11/10/51 W 37-28 H comeback. He completed a 19-yard pass to Jordan Duncan to move into Husky territory and later in the 11/8/52 L 7-22 A drive found Kekoa Crawford on a 27-yard catch-and-run to move the ball to the Washington 3-yard line 11/7/53 W 53-25 H 11/6/54 W 27-6 A with 1:25 left. 11/5/55 W 20-6 H 10/27/56 W 16-7 A Thomas' second field goal of the night sent the Cal sideline into a frenzy, and the Bears were able to 11/16/57 L 27-35 H close it out. 11/15/58 W 12-7 A 11/14/59 L 0-20 H "Everybody here handled it great," Wilcox said about the delay. "Everyone is in the same situation. It is 11/12/60 L 7-27 A 10/14/61 W 21-14 H what it is. Henry made four field goals for Washington. 10/11/69 W 44-13 H 10/10/70 W 31-28 A Cal All-America candidate Evan Weaver was arguably the best player on the field on either side, tying a 11/6/71 L 7-30 H career-high with 18 tackles while recording two tackles for loss. He also forced the first fumble that was 10/28/72 L 21-35 A 10/6/73 W 54-49 H recovered by the Bears' Ben Hawk Schrider. 11/9/74 W 52-26 A 11/8/75 W 27-24 H Weaver did a number on the Huskies last year as well, returning an interception 37 yards for a touch- 11/6/76 W 7-0 A down to lift the Bears to a 12-10 victory. WASHINGTON • NOVEMBER 7, 2020 | HEAD COACH HEAD COACH JUSTIN WILCOX Justin Wilcox is in his fourth season as the head football coach at Cal and his 20th campaign in col- legiate coaching in 2020. He has already compiled a long list of accomplishments and signature wins in his first three seasons as the head football coach at Cal, leading the Golden Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and bowl games each of the last two years for the first time since 2008 and 2009. His teams have produced victories over all but one of the other five schools in the Pac-12 North and been victorious in road games at all three of the Bears’ Pac-12 California opponents, ending droughts that dat- ed back to 2000 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and 2009 at both the Rose Bowl and Stanford Stadium. The Bears have also taken down a top-15 team in each of Wilcox’s first three seasons including 2018 Pac-12 champion Washington each of the last two campaigns and produced a perfect 9-0 mark in non-conference regular season games including four wins against Power 5 schools. Wilcox began his third season at Cal in 2019 with four straight wins to move the Golden Bears into the No. 15 spot in the AP Top 25 and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. The victories included road wins at then No. 14/12 Washington and Ole Miss with the latter the first road triumph by a Pac-12 school at an SEC foe since 2010. The two signature wins helped the Bears to a 4-2 mark in true road games to give Cal back- to-back winning seasons on the road for the first time since 2004. A strong defense led by national Defensive Player of the Year candidate Evan Weaver; an offense that took care of the football, setting a record for fewest number of turnovers in a season, and produced explosive plays. They were a disciplined team, leading the conference and ranking in the top 15 nationally in all penalty categories, who had a penchant for game-winning drives. Weaver led the nation in total tackles (school-record 182), total tackles per game (14.0), solo tackles (103) and solo tackles per game (7.9) for a Bears’ defense that allowed only 21.9 points per game and ranked fourth in the Pac-12 in both scoring defense and total defense (389.9 ypg). On offense, Cal put together game-winning drives on its final possessions both at Washington and Stanford in 2019 while committing only 13 turnovers, two less than the previous school record of 15, set in 2016. Cal also sport- ed a 7-0 record in games that starting quarterback Chase Garbers both started and finished. Wilcox guided the Bears to the Cheez-It Bowl and a 7-6 record in his second campaign in 2018 with the THE WILCOX FILE bowl appearance Cal’s first since 2015. The Bears won four out of five Pac-12 games over one stretch, highlighted by signature wins over eventual Pac-12 champion and then-No. 15/13 Washington as well as Birthdate Nov. 12, 1976 at USC. The victory over the Trojans clinched bowl eligibility and marked Cal’s first win against USC since Hometown Junction City, Oregon 2003 and the first victory at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 2000. Cal also started the season High School Junction City HS with a 3-0 mark and in Week 5 made its first appearance since 2015 in the AP Top 25 at No. 24. College Oregon 1999, Bachelor’s Degree in Cal’s defense has been vastly improved under Wilcox and finished the 2018 campaign among national Anthropology and Pac-12 leaders in nearly every category. The Bears also led the conference and ranked in the top 20 in the country in pass efficiency defense (107.26, No. 11 NCAA) and first Coaching History downs allowed (227, No. 18 NCAA). Cal was also 15th nationally in total defense (317.2 ypg) and 22nd Season School Coaching Position (Record As HC) in scoring defense (20.4 ppg) while registering third in the Pac-12 in both areas. 2001-02 Boise State Graduate Assistant 2003-05 California Linebackers The highlights of Wilcox’s first season as the head coach in Berkeley in 2017 included a 3-0 start and 2006-09 Boise State Defensive Coordinator non-conference wins over Power 5 programs North Carolina and Ole Miss, as well as a 37-3 victory over 2010-11 Tennessee Defensive Coordinator then No. 8/9 Washington State. The victory was the Bears’ first against a top-10 team since 2003 and 2012-13 Washington Defensive Coordinator only its second top-10 win since 1977. Cal finished 5-7 overall in his first season as the head coach at 2014-15 USC Defensive Coordinator Cal. The Bears notched a Pac-12 victory over Oregon State but also took three conference opponents to 2016 Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator/ILBs the wire as they lost by a combined total of seven points to Arizona, UCLA and Stanford. 2017-Pres. Over his first 18 seasons in 2006 Boise State Fiesta Bowl collegiate coaching, Wilcox has been a member of staffs that have gone to 15 bowl games and won five 2007 Boise State Hawai’i Bowl conference or division championships. 2008 Boise State Poinsettia Bowl Wilcox spent three seasons as Cal’s linebackers coach from 2003-05 in his first position as a full-time 2009 Boise State Fiesta Bowl coach following two campaigns as a graduate assistant at Boise State (2001-02). The Bears posted a 2010 Tennessee Music City Bowl 26-12 record during his first stint in Berkeley with trips to the Insight, Holiday and Las Vegas bowls. 2012 Washington Las Vegas Bowl 2013 Washington Fight Hunger Bowl A 1999 graduate of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, Wilcox is the son of Dave Wilcox, a 2014 USC Holiday Bowl Pro Football Hall of Famer who played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1964-74.
