Patricia L. Hartwell, a former war correspondent and arts administrator, died in her Kaneohe home Monday Dec 28, 1998. She was 82. Hartwell was born in Austin, Texas. She attended Wellesley College and Columbia University's journalism school. During World War II, she wrote about the Pacific and European theaters for Collier's and Women's Home Companion magazines. She continued writing for national magazines after the war and left New York in 1961 to run The Arizonian, a weekly newspaper in Scottsdale, Ariz., that she and her second husband, Dickson Hartwell, had bought. They eventually sold the paper, and she became the first director of the Scottsdale Fine Arts Commission and oversaw construction of the city's Center for the Arts. In 1971, she moved with her family to Oahu, where over the years she served as director of the Arts Council of Hawaii, edited a State Foundation on Culture and the Arts newsletter, was an art editor for Honolulu magazine, and taught magazine writing at the University of Hawaii. She is survived by four sons, Stephen and Jefferson Bull and Jay and Ware Hartwell; brother Lloyd Lochridge; sister Chloe Massie; companion Stewart Fern, and five grandchildren. William H. Heen Jr., 85, former Kailua resident and son of former territorial Senate President William H. Heen, died Tuesday Apr 14, 1998 in Santa Rosa, Calif. A retired fiscal officer for the Koolau Boys Home of the state Department of Corrections, the junior Heen was born in Hilo. His father died in 1973. The younger Heen served on the Oahu School Advisory Council in the 1960s. His community activities also included memberships in the Hawaiian Government Employees Association and Maunawili Elementary School Parent-Teachers Association. He retired from his state position in 1964 and moved to Santa Rosa in 1989. “He enjoyed fishing; he enjoyed golf,” said daughter Shellene Gilman. “He enjoyed following the Rainbow football and basketball teams. He was a lifelong Democrat. He kept busy mostly with fishing, golfing and spectator sports (in retirement).” He also is survived by son Peter; brothers Curtis N. and Douglas; sister Muriel K. Robert Heiserman Jr - When Robert Heiserman Jr. retired as president of Amfac/JMB’s agricultural operations last August, he was able to see the company’s sugar plantations on Kauai turn a profit for the first time in a decade. During his five-year tenure, Heiserman helped the company go through tough financial times. He developed a long-range plan to return the company to profitability and is credited with helping to save Amfac’s Kekaha and Lihue plantations. “He was doing everything that he could to save the plantations,” said his wife, Betty. “He loved Kauai and he loved the Hawaiian islands. He’d been in sugar cane 50 years. This was a wonderful way to top off his career—in paradise,” she said. Heiserman, 73, died July 12, 1998 at the Queen’s Medical Center of complications from cancer. Services were held today at Valley Forge Park in Pennsylvania, and he was buried near his birthplace in Bryn Mawr. Heiserman and his partner, Robert Reid, first came to Hawaii as consultants. In 1992, they were asked to run Amfac’s agricultural operations, which at that time included the Pioneer Mill on Maui, Oahu Sugar Co. and a coffee plantation. A few days after they started work, Hurricane Iniki hit. Much of the first 18 months was spent helping the plantations recover. Heiserman also oversaw the closure of the Oahu Sugar Co. when the leases for its sugar lands were not renewed. “During his tenure we did a lot of downsizing and re-engineering. He led us through a lot of changes,” said Lyle Tabata, vice president of operations for Amfac sugar. “Nobody wants to lay people off, but you have to have the fortitude to do something like that and he did it because it was the right thing,” Tabata said. Heiserman merged the operations at Kekaha and Lihue, which resulted in the loss of about 200 jobs. There were also layoffs at Pioneer Mill. Betty Heiserman said the closure of Oahu Sugar was “heart wrenching” for her husband. “He had a love of the plantation and deep feelings about the people,” she said. Heiserman’s door was always open to any employee and workers even came to him with personal problems. “He had a lot of pride and integrity—integrity above all. When he said he was going to do something for you, he did it and he had a lot of compassion for his fellow man,” Tabata said. Heiserman’s career in sugar began while working part-time at the National Sugar Refining Co. during college. He graduated from Princeton University after serving in the Air Force as a navigator during World War II. He worked with the Holly Sugar Corp. and was president of North American Sugar Industries. He also ran a general management consulting firm in Colorado Springs. Heiserman kept working despite his age because he felt a need to contribute, Tabata said. “He saw an opportunity to help us here in Hawaii and his efforts were tireless,” Tabata said. Betty Heiserman said she and her husband would have lunch regularly at the Princeville Resort in Hanalei. “He would look at the Na Pali Coast and he said, ‘If there is a heaven, this must be heaven because heaven must look like this.’” Besides his wife, Heiserman is survived by son Robert III; daughters Sally and Amy Szvetecz; step-daughter Melissa Hosp; a grandson and step-grandson. Retired Adm. John J. Hyland, 1967-70 Pacific Fleet commander, Honolulu resident and much-decorated scion of an old Navy family, died Sunday Oct 25, 1998 in St. Francis Hospice after a brief illness. He was 86. A naval aviator, he championed the aircraft carrier. “The aircraft carrier is one way to provide first- class tactical air power in a selected area,” he once said. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1934, 34 years after the academy graduation of his father, a Navy captain. He became a Navy flier in 1937. In the Philippines at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, he took part in the defense of the Philippines, various engagements in the Dutch East Indies and the 1942 Allied pullback to Australia. Later that year, he became Fleet Adm. Ernest J. King's personal pilot, returning to the Pacific in 1943. He commanded an air group flying off the carrier Intrepid and took part in various combat actions in the last years of World War II. His postwar career included a number of command positions, both sea and air. He also was a Navy test pilot and served in various high-ranking staff positions. He took over the Pacific Fleet with promotion to full admiral after his 1965-67 command of the 7th Fleet in Southeast Asian waters. His arrival then marked his third Pearl Harbor tour. In 1940, he was stationed here, and his family lived six months on Ford Island. In 1954, he returned to Hawaii to become Pacific Fleet air operations officer. After retiring Jan. 1, 1971, Hyland held business directorships and continued an active interest in naval aviation. He was elected to the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor in Pensacola, Fla., and the Naval Aviation Test Pilots Hall of Honor in Charleston, S.C. His awards and decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal with gold star for second award for exceptional meritorious service; Distinguished Flying Cross with gold stars for two additional awards for heroism or extraordinary achievement in flight; Silver Star for gallantry in action in leading a low-level air attack against an enemy air base at Kure, Japan, on March 19, 1945; and Air Medal with gold stars for four additional awards for meritorious service in war or peace. Decorations from governments of the Netherlands, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Republic of China and South Vietnam also came to Hyland. He received the John Paul Jones Award for inspirational leadership from the Navy League in 1966. His wife, the former Florence Day Whiting, died in 1991. An art admirer, she was a volunteer with the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The admiral is survived by sons John J. Hyland III and Whiting Walker Hyland; daughters Nancy Arnold and Pamela Hyland; seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. A Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Naval Station Chapel, Pearl Harbor, with visitation from 10:45 a.m. Inurnment will follow in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl, at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
