His long and illustrious career straddled the fine and applied arts, encompassing paintings, posters, advertisements, ceramics, book covers, wallpaper and much more. He was also an Official War Artist in the Second World War alongside his friend Eric Ravilious. After a curator talk and a chance to view the exhibition, we will have lunch independently nearby before taking the coach to Great Bardfield, Bawden’s Essex home for over 40 years. We will be met by Janet Dyson, author of Artists of Great Bardfield, who will guide us on foot around the locations associated with the renowned group of artists who lived and worked in the village in the mid twentieth century. As well as Bawden, they included Ravilious, Michael Rothenstein, Sheila Robinson, Kenneth Rowntree and Marianne Straub. We will have tea and cake in the Town Hall before returning to Cambridge. There will be at least 90 minutes’ walking so comfortable shoes are recommended. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Depart Queen’s Road (The Backs) coach stop by the junction with Silver Street at 8.45 am, Trumpington Park & Ride at 9 am. Tickets to include coach, Fry entry and coffee, guided walk and tea, £40. Last year, donations from the Friends enabled the Kettle’s Yard curatorial team to work over a six month period with expert conservators to care for works in the collection. The conservation work was carried out in preparation for the reopening of the new site, ensuring that the House was also looking at its very best. This talk will explore some of the projects that were undertaken on the fine art works, including the Alfred Wallis paintings, and textiles. The shop will be open from 7 pm for ticket holders to look at / buy Christmas items etc and there will be drinks available on presentation of your ticket. The talk/discussion will start at 8 pm in the House and will be open to ticket holders only. Tickets £5.
