Thanks to Broken Hill artisans like the Wild Bunch Florist, who are still operating during the current lockdown, locals have access to safe delivery of flowers and other goodies in these difficult times. Wild Bunch Florist owner and manager, Belinda Philpott, says they have been busy with lots of orders. “It’s good because it’s always a bit of a risk opening in these periods – we could potentially have staff sitting around all day not doing anything - but it has been steady,” says Belinda. “So, I guess that’s reassuring for us, that it was the best thing to do.” Contactless delivery is the only option Wild Bunch is currently offering to ensure the safety of their staff, clients and the wider community.

Edwin Greenslade (Dryblower) Murphy, journalist, 1866-1939, is pictured above. But ‘Dryblower’ was more than a journalist. He wrote verse, satirical verse, amusing verse, verse that soon became an institution in the Coolgardie Miner. It all began at Bulong when a dusty and soiled envelope provided copy paper for the first piece of verse penned and printed between York, WA, and South Australia. Murphy wrote “The Fossicker’s Yarn” to “squash and squelch the objectionable ‘Jackeroo’ (sic) system obtaining on Bayley’s Reward Mine”. “Dryblower” sent the verses to the Coolgardie Miner and a friend sent them to the Sydney Bulletin. The Bulletin published them first, while the Miner “had them in type awaiting issue”. They appeared in the third issue of the Miner. See ANHG 94.4.9 below for Dryblower’s poem, “The Printer”. Colac, Victoria, celebrated 150 years of newspaper publication this year. Four newspapers had been started there by 1902 when its first and only daily appeared. With the financial backing of a local medical practitioner, Joseph Gillis Wynne, the Colac Daily News was launched on 24 March 1902, with journalist James Cleary Roach as printer and publisher (see colophon below). The paper ceased publication on 20 October 1903, after the plant and machinery had been seized by the bailiffs. The only available files of the paper are in hard copy in six packages (see above) held at the Ballarat stores depot of the State Library of Victoria. Each issue is folded and so fragile it threatens to disintegrate with even the gentlest handling, making it extremely difficult to study them in detail. Your editor viewed them in the Heritage Collection Room of SLV, Melbourne. The Colac Herald, the town’s second paper, was launched on 22 October 1869 and is still published.
