Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Rain Forest Unit 2 Rain Forest Relationships Overview Length of Entire Unit In this unit, students learn about some of the Five class periods main species in the rain forests of Haleakalä and how they are related within the unique structure Unit Focus Questions of Hawaiian rain forests. 1) What is the basic structure of the Haleakalä The primary canopy trees in the rain forest of rain forest? Haleakalä and throughout the Hawaiian Islands are öhia (Metrosideros polymorpha) and koa 2) What are some of the plant and animal (Acacia koa). At upper elevations, including the species that are native to the Haleakalä rain cloud forest zone within the rain forest, öhia forest? Where are they found within the rain dominates and koa is absent. Today, native species within the rain forests on Haleakalä include more than 240 flowering plants, 100 ferns, somewhere between 600-1000 native invertebrates, the endemic Hawaiian hoary bat, and nine endemic birds in the honey- creeper group. -

Montane habitats of the interior of Rarotonga, southern Cook Islands, are critical to the health and well-being of the island’s people, and its indigenous biota. The steep mountain slopes, isolated and at least partly protected by their extreme terrain, support one of the best remaining examples of montane rainforest in the tropical Pacific, and are critical habitat for many of the island’s endemic species. For these reasons, the montane and cloud forests of Rarotonga are internationally significant. Rainfall increases dramatically with altitude, and cloud forest on the mountain summits intercepts, filters, and releases water that supplies the island’s streams, that are the sole water supply for the island. Cloud forest habitats, with their abundance of non-vascular plant species such as lichens, can also increase water yield relative to other vegetation types, as lichens can absorb water from moisture-laden air, in the absence of precipitation. -

Hollyer, et al., 2002, During the preparation of that publication, Puanani Onapali Anderson-Fung, then with the UH Mänoa Department of Botany, the UH Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology program, and ‘Ahahui Mälama i ka Lökahi (Hawaiians for the Conservation of Native Ecosystems), was contracted to prepare a background chapter on Hawaiian ecosystems biology and related cultural practices. To ensure the veracity of the latter element, she enlisted the collaboration of the co-author, Kepä Maly, cultural historian and resource specialist, an authority on Hawaiian cultural traditions. She also sought review by John Charlot, UH Mänoa Department of Religion, and Isabella Abbott and Charles Lamoureux, UH Mänoa Department of Botany. The photographs are by Clyde T. Imada. East Polynesian Species of Freycinetia Gaudichaud (Pandanaceae )1 BENJAMIN C. STONE Departm ent of Botany, University of Mala y a, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Abstract- Three species of Freycinetia (F. arborea, F. impavida, and F. baueriana) are found in Eastern Polynesia , defined as the Hawaiian , Marquesan , Society , Cook , Austral , and Tubuai Archipelagoes , and New Zealand . These have been known under variou s names , which are cited in synonymy. The species F. baueriana exists as two subspecies , one in Norfolk Island, one in new Zealand. Key to species, full liter ature citations , typification , and nomenclature are presented. Introduction Plants of the genus Freycinetia Gaudichaud, woody lianas of the family Pandanaceae, are frequent in the high islands of Polynesia . They are known to occur in the Society Islands , the Marquesas, the Hawaiian Islands, the Cook Islands, and in New Zealand. For the purposes of this account , Eastern Polynesia is rather arbitrarily defined to include the above-mentioned localities , while the Samoan Islands , the Tonga Group, and the islands in the Phoenix, Tokelau , Tuvalu , Horn, Kermadec, and Kiribati groups are excluded. Freycinetia typically occurs on the high , basaltic islands , and not on low coral atolls; but it may occur on old uplifted and weathered limestone . The region considered here is determined by the distribution and biogeographic relationships of the species of Freycinetia to be considered, which alone or together may be found in the localities herein referred to as " Eastern Polynesia ." Materials studied in this work are cited, and have come from, the herbaria whose codes, as stipulated in the Index Herbariorum , are mentioned below . -
