Norwood Park Presbyterian Church Annual Directory 1942 Transcribed by Stephanie Pierce Carbonetti

The Chicago Genealogical Society received a donation of the 1942 Norwood Park Presbyterian Church Annual Directory recently. The church was located at 5849 N Nina Avenue (Nina and Nicolet Avenues) in Chicago. The first church service was on 7 May 1871 and formally dedicated as the “Norwood Park American Reform Church.” In October of 1916, the church became the Norwood Park Presbyterian Church. The book includes the history of the church, past ministers and local advertisements. The minister in 1942 was Rev. Bertram G. Jackson (picture included). This directory has been donated to the Newberry Library. *Indicates service in some branch of our Country’s forces.

Chicago Railroad Related Land Sales: 1906-07 By: Craig L. Pfannkuche

By the turn into the 20th century, the leadership of the City of Chicago had been deluged with numerous complaints about the mass of deaths which were occurring every year at the almost uncountable number of railroad grade crossings found throughout the city. Even at that time, Chicago was the railroad capitol of North America and literally many hundreds of trains including both passenger and freight trains entered and exited the city every day. In the majority of cases, the grade crossings were not protected in any way with anything but signs warning “Look Out For The Cars!” Automatic gates did not yet exist. Some crossings were protected by gates which had to be manually lowered by railroad “gateman” on the approach of a train. Some gatemen did not always react in time. Other crossings were protected only by a man holding a stop sign. Something had to be done to protect the city’s inhabitants from “carnage by train.”

Street Crossing in the center is today's Western Avenue. The tracks switching off to the lower left of the photo are the tracks of the Old Milwaukee Road (now METRA) line which turns north here and heads to Elgin on the west and Fox Lake on the north. The tracks straight ahead are the C&NW tracks to Elmhurst and beyond. The photo is taken looking east. Photo dated July 1908.

The response of the city’s leaders was to pass an ordinance, much railed against by the many railroad companies which entered Chicago as being way too costly to the railroads, which would force the railroad companies to elevate their lines so streets could pass safely beneath the various rail lines. Many of the city’s leaders ignored the protests of the railroad companies since they knew 11

Chicago Genealogical Society Vol. 51 No. 1 Fall 2018

that the construction companies which would be hired to do the work, and in which they had a serious financial interest, would provide them with a great amount of personal profit. Further, these so called “Grey Wolves” who inhabited the city council chambers at the time could boast to their constituencies that such an ordinance would provide many additional jobs and greatly improve their chance for survival against the evil railroads - as many saw the railroads to be.

Thus, by 1905 the ordinance passed and the railroads began the task of elevating their lines into the city; except for the Illinois Central Railroad line which ran along the lake shore. In order to do this, the various construction companies hired by the railroads had to build either stone or concrete retaining walls along both sides of the tracks where they were hired to do the work. In order to do that work, land alongside the original railroad right of way had to be acquired. This was the responsibility of the railroads themselves.

Site of photo is unknown. It does show on the left the retaining wall under construction. Photo taken July 1908.

An archivist working at the archives of the Chicago and North Western Historical Society, where a vast amount of the records of the now gone (since 1995 by the Union Pacific Railroad) Chicago and North Western Railroad can be found, recently uncovered three small ledgers listing that railroad’s purchases of such land.

Interestingly, a significant number of properties were owned by women. This was often because men, more liable in those days to being sued, placed their properties in the names of their wives to avoid the loss of property if a suit was lost. 12

The following is an alphabetical listing of the land owners from which the needed property was purchased. Following the name of the land owner is a legal description of the land purchased which will allow interested researchers to find the street address of the property. The cost of the purchase of the property can be obtained by a request to the Chicago and North Western Historical Society (www.cnwhs.org).

The three columns contain 1) the name of the land owner (not necessarily the people living on the site), 2) a legal description of the site, and 3) the book in which the data can be found.

Upcoming CGS Programs November & December 2018

November 3 - Valid and Unsound Assumptions: What Was She Thinking? Our speaker is Jeanne Larzelere Bloom, CG. The search for the deceased husband of Elizabeth Larzelere enumerated in 1820 with four young children leads to unexpected results and to new questions. Come learn about this research journey. Jeanne Larzalere Bloom, CG® is a full-time professional researcher with over fifteen (15) years of experience. She specializes in forensic genealogy, problem solving, multi-generational family histories, Chicago and Cook County research. As a case manager for the American History Company, Jeanne works on identifying family members that can provide Family Reference Samples (mtDNA, Y-DNA, and autosomal DNA) to aid in the possible identification of unaccounted for soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War and to determine the Primary Next of Kin and the Secondary Next of Kin of the servicemen. She has worked on over 400 cases with a success rate of over 95 percent. Jeanne researched the Chicago ancestry for many episodes of the television series, Who Do You Think You Are? and appeared in the Jason Sudeikis and Julie Bowen episodes. Jeanne lectures frequently at conferences, workshops, and institutes and writes articles for scholarly journals and society publications. She holds a Bachelor of Arts [History] from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a second-year certificate from the University of Chicago's publishing program. She is a trustee and a former president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists.

December 1 - Adding Context: Social History for Genealogists. Our speaker will be Ginger Frere. Learn how to add depth and greater human interest to your family stories by including the social settings in which your ancestors lived. We will discuss the value of adding social context to family stories, review samples of narratives where context is provided, and look at some published social histories to determine where and how to find materials of interest to genealogists. Ginger Frere, MLIS, MBA, is a professional researcher who provides a variety of research services to authors, professional historians, film makers and individuals interested in genealogy. Her primary research interests include Chicago history and the creation of online tools for genealogists. She was one of the driving forces behind the development of ChicagoAncestors.org.

In addition to researching, Ginger is a frequent speaker in the Chicago-land area and a regular instructor in Chicago’s Newberry Library Adult Education seminar program. She is also a Newberry Scholar-in-Residence.

These FREE programs will be held at the Newberry Library at 60 West Walton, Chicago, and begin at 1:30 p.m.

Chicago Genealogical Society Vol. 51 No. 1 Fall 2018

Professor and Reverend John Alfred Hultman “The Sunshine Singer” By: Stephanie Pierce Carbonetti

From time to time the Chicago Genealogical Society receives donations of old pictures taken in Chicago from people all over the country who find them in antiques stores, estate sales, and on ebay. As the quarterly editor, I try to include as many as possible in the publication.

The photo to the right arrived recently from a woman who found it in the northwest. Written in pen on the back is “Proffessor H. A. Hultman.” See picture below of the inscription. The picture was taken at A M Rothschild & Co., State Street and Van Buren Street, Chicago.

Professor Hultman looks to be wearing a tuxedo or other formal attire. I thought there has to be a story with this picture.

Guessing the picture was from the turn of the century, searches were made of the 1900 and 1910 censuses for an adult H* Hultman male living in Chicago returned no results.

Further research of the 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905 Chicago city directories did not provide any possible candidates. However, the 1906 Chicago city directory had the following entry “HULTMAN PIANOS Rev H Soderholm mngr 7, 108 Washington.”1 The entry does have the “H” for a first name but Soderholm does not match the “A” in the inscription as a middle initial. A piano business could match the tuxedo in the picture. Could he be the right person? The piano business must have been short lived. Researching the Chicago city directories for following years 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1912, 1913 and 1914 were negative searches. Was Professor Hultman’s move to Chicago a brief one?

Wondering if I was going to be able to find out any more about Professor H.A. Hultman, I turned to research newspapers. A search of the Chicago Tribune historical newspaper and online www.newspapers.com for “Professor H.A. Hultman” was unsuccessful. After searching other combinations, “Professor Hultman” returned some results. At first, I noticed they were from all

over the country, not Chicago. The articles were from Montana, Wisconsin, Kansas, California and New York. The articles were about a “Professor J.A. Hultman.”

The Salina Evening Journal of Salina, Kansas published on 24 October 1905 provided the first clue:

CONCERT AT SALINA Professor Hultman of Chicago Will Conduct It

Preparations are being made by the Swedish Mission church of this city for a sacred concert which is to be given November 8 for the benefit of Walden college of McPherson. The concert will be given by Prof. J.A. Hultman of Worcester, Mass., the most noted singer of the Swedish Mission church in the United States, and a man of national reputation.2

The time period and formal attire could be a match for the picture. However, the “H” written on the back of the picture did not look like a “J.” Was J.A. Hultman the correct person in the picture? After reviewing over 100 newspaper articles, The Brainerd Daily Dispatch (Brainerd, Minnesota) answered the question on 1 November 1915, with the picture to the right included with the article:3 I found the correct Mr. Hultman.

John Alfred Hultman was born 6 July 1861 in “Safsjo” or “Hultsjo”, Smaland, Sweden. He emigrated to the United States in 1869.4 John, son of Johannes and Christine K (Magunsdotter) Hultman, was living in Omaha when he married Carolina Palmer of Chicago, daughter of Nils and Maria (Nilsdotter) Palmer, on 10 May 1884 in Omaha, Nebraska.5 While living in Nebraska in the 1880’s, John and Carolina “Lina/Lena” would have three known children,

Julia, Paul and Olivia.6 By 1896, Professor Hultman was living in Chicago teaching at North Park College. The college, founded by the Evangelical Covenant Church, had moved in 1894 to Chicago from Minnesota. Professor Hultman taught and gave singing lessons to students from the Fall 1896 to Spring 1897. However, he was so popular traveling almost 24,000 miles a year giving concerts, the college couldn’t keep him as a professor.7

The church history for the Evangelical Covenant Church of Worcester, Massachusetts, records John as a baritone singer and the pastor of the church from 1900-1906. His background included studying and teaching music and documented he spent 14 years as a pastor in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Massachusetts. He composed and performed concerts all over the country, becoming renowned in the United States and Sweden, called “Solskenssångaren” – the “Sunshine Singer.”8 Professor Hultman would travel with a portable collapsible organ to play at concerts. The original organ is in the archives at North Park University’s Brandel Library in Chicago.9 See picture to the right.

Bergman in the District of Columbia.11 John would die doing what he loved on 7 August 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He is buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Colma, San Mateo County, California.12 The website www.findagrave.com has a memorial page for John with a lengthy biography and several pictures.

There are many sources online providing information about Professor Hultman. The Internet Archives website has recordings of John singing that you can listen to at: https://archive.org/details/SwedishEvangelist.

Also, North Park University has an online Historical Photograph Collection with 25 pictures of John during his career and a picture of him and his first wife Carolina. In the collection is the same picture that was donated to the Chicago Genealogical Society that inspired this article. The Evangelical Covenant Church and North Park University Archives has a collection “J.A. Hultman Papers” that has items dated from 1882-1932. The finding aid for this collection provides an inventory of mixed material for two boxes that include sheet music and music books. The Archives is located in the Brandel Library, 3225 W Foster Avenue, Chicago.

Bishop Maurice Francis Burke

This is a cabinet card photograph of Maurice Francis Burke. The back of this card says that "Bp. Burke gave me this Nov 18, 1887, the day on which he left for Cheyenne." We are looking at Bishop Maurice Francis Burke who was a Catholic priest in Chicago at St. Mary's between 1878 and 1885. He was born on May 5, 1845 in Nockainy, Limrick, Ireland. He came to Chicago with his parents, Francis and Johanna (Casey) Burke, as a small child. He was assigned to Joliet from 1886 into 1887. In November 1887, he was assigned to become the first bishop of Cheyenne, . He tried hard to establish a Catholic diocese there but massive opposition from the "American Protective League" drove him out. He was reassigned to the Catholic diocese of St. Joseph, . He died there on 17 March 1923 and is buried there in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Both his parents died in Chicago and are buried in Calvary Cemetery. 27

Maggie Mahon

The date on the reverse of the Carte de Visite is September 13, 1877. That is all we know about her except that she came with the group of Catholic church photos. She was probably a "Sisters of Mercy" girl. The reverse of the card is a tiny hand written note sayings "To my own darling Sister Stanislaw hoping that she ever looks at it she will think of one who always thinks of her." The photographer was H. H. Clynch at 163 South Halsted, Chicago.

Miss M. Higgins

The back of this photo says "Miss M. Higgins, 1877." It may be that this young woman was the student, Mary Higgins, who graduated from the "Sisters of Mercy" school in June 1876. The 1880 census suggests that she was age 17 in 1880. The Carte de visite photo was taken by Brand at 210 & 220 Wabash in Chicago.
