Modi University, Newai, Rajasthan, India. : An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in English ISSN 2455-7544 www.daathvoyagejournal.com Vol.1, No.3, September, 2016 Exploring the Illusive Borderlines: Construction of Identity in the Indian Subcontinent Raj Raj Mukhopadhyay Student, M.A. (II) Department of English VisvaBharati University Email: [email protected] Abstract: The creation of borderlines demarcating the geographical boundary of the state has always problematized the discourse of nation incorporating the issues and debates of race, class, religion and historical events. It is also significant how it presents the ongoing process of the construction of personal ‘identity’ and the cultural determination of one’s selfhood. In the Indian subcontinent, the case is more interesting and complex as nation building takes place in heterogeneous, even fragmented lingual and cultural societies all over our country. The idea of ‘nation’ in the Subcontinent is much complicated, where the question of ethnicity and other forms of religious and political identities play a key role. My paper entitled “Exploring the Illusive Borderlines: Construction of Identity in the Indian Subcontinent” is a very modest attempt to get a glimpse into how the formation of borderlines by the partition of India delineates the construction of racial, religious and cultural ‘identity’ of an individual. This paper aims at studying few short stories like Intizar Husain’s “An Unwritten Epic”, SaadatHasanManto’s “Toba Tek Singh” and films like Vol.1, Issue 3, 2016 Page 67 : An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in English ISSN 2455-7544 www.daathvoyagejournal.com Vol.1, No.3, September, 2016 SrijitMukherji’s “Rajkahini”, Deepa Mehta’s “Earth”, exploring the inherent complexities that arise while defining one’s identity, which is determined by one’s socio-cultural and religious position.

  • Rajnish Rai's Allegations of a Fake Encounter in Assam Will Not Impact
Rajnish Rai’s Allegations of a Fake Encounter in Assam Will Not Impact the Impunity of India’s Security Forces KISHALAY BHATTACHARJEE 31 May 2017 Manipur state police commandoes announce resumption of curfew after a relaxation period of four hours expired in Imphal, on 6 August 2009. The language and descriptions of Rajnish Rai’s letter are eerily similar to hundreds of such reports from Assam, Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir—three states with a significant number of encounter killings. AP PHOTO Rajnish Rai is no stranger to the consequences of investigating cases of staged encounter killings. Rai, a 1992 batch officer from the Indian Police Service, first courted controversy in 2007, during his tenure as the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Crime Investigation Department of Gujarat. In April that year, he arrested three senior IPS officers—DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandiyan and MN Dinesh—for the fake encounters of a gangster, Sohrabuddin Sheikh, and his wife, Kausar Bi, in November 2005. By May 2007, Rai was taken off the investigation, so that—according to a report in The Hindu—he could be prevented from “putting the arrested senior IPS officers to more embarrassment.” He was instead posted as the DIG of the State Crime Records Bureau, a non-executive post, which was followed by a transfer to another non-executive posting as the principal, Police Training (Chowky) in Junagadh. His superiors, PC Pande, then the director general of police in Gujarat and OP Mathur, who was the CID (Crime) chief, downgraded the review of his performance in his annual confidential report for the period between 1 April 2007 and 22 August 2007 from “very good” to “average.” In April 2008, the officials of Gujarat University claimed that Rai had cheated in the LLB examinations that he had appeared for and declared him failed in all subjects.

High Technology Letters ISSN NO : 1006-6748 The Angry woman of Indian Cinema - A Saga of the Marginal 1Ms. Dharna Bhatt, 2Dr. Barnali Chetia 1 Research Scholar, 2Assistant Professor 1,2Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, 1,2Indian Institute of Information Technology Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India Abstract In Indian cinema, the concept of anger was associated with men, popularizing the idea of 'Angry young man' not 'Angry young woman,' which in fact catapulted many male actors career to undisputed stardom. Women remained marginalized even in this sector. As per the gender stereotype of emotion, anger is associated with men. However, there are some women characters in Indian cinema whose bold portrayal of the emotion of anger has rightfully caught the eyes of the critics. This paper is an attempt to portray the anger of women in different roles- mother, wife, sister, friend, and prostitute, to name a few. This study is based on some selected 'angry' female characters of Indian cinema who were more often than not overshadowed by the 'angry' male characters. The study is qualitative in nature which follows the form of narration for analyzing the emotion of anger in women of Indian cinema. Key Words:- Emotion, Anger, Women, Marginal, Indian Cinema. I. Introduction Emotion is a conscious mental reaction (as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feeling usually directed towards a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioural changes in the body. Happiness, love, fear, anger, hatred, trust, joy, grief, hurt, shame, loneliness, etc. are some terms to express Emotion. Visual Grandeur, Imagined Glory: Identity Politics and Hindu Nationalism in Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat Abstract This paper examines the tropes through which the Hindi (Bollywood) historical films Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018) create idealised pasts on screen that speak to Hindu nationalist politics of present-day India. Bajirao Mastani is based on a popular tale of love, between Bajirao I (1700-1740), a powerful Brahmin general, and Mastani, daughter of a Hindu king and his Iranian mistress. The er lationship was socially disapproved because of Mastani`s mixed parentage. The film distorts India`s pluralistic heritage by idealising Bajirao as an embodiment of Hindu nationalism and portraying Islam as inimical to Hinduism. Padmaavat is a film about a legendary (Hindu) Rajput queen coveted by the Muslim emperor Alauddin Khilji (ruled from 1296-1316).

It is a critical-historical account of the transitional era, roughly from 1998 to 2018, and examines practices and decisions taken ‘on the ground’ by film sound recordists, editors, designers and mixers. My work explores the histories and genealogies of the transition by analysing the individual, as well as collective, aesthetic concerns of film workers migrating from the celluloid to the digital age. My inquiry aimed to explore linkages between the digital turn and shifts in production practices, notably sound recording, sound design and sound mixing. The study probes the various ways in which these shifts shaped the aesthetics, styles, genre conventions, and norms of image-sound relationships in Indian cinema in comparison with similar practices from Euro-American film industries.

Introduction In late 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the criminalisation of same-sex relationships and intimacies under the colonial Section 377 was unconstitutional; bringing an end to a legal battle that spanned two decades. Amongst the celebrations were the expected criticisms, most notably to me that of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) spokesperson Arun Kumar who declared that, while it should not be illegal, it would never be accepted in Indian culture (Hindustan Times, 2018). The RSS is a Hindu group founded by the early Hindutva thinkers Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Madhav Sadhashiv Golwalkar. Their ideology is centred on India, or Bharat, is a Hindu nation, and must belong in no diminished manner to the Hindus, something their website describes as a “global mission” and “for the welfare of entire mankind” (RSS Website, 2019). Under Golwalkar, the second Sarsangchalak (leader), race science from Europe, specifically Nazi Germany, was incorporated, and minorities under his vision would have to venerate the superior Hindu (and Aryan) race in a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu state), and could claim no civil rights or privileges (Guha, 2008: 35).
