PADRES TO AID USD BASEBALL PROGRAM
The San Diego Padres will continue their program of support for local college
baseball for the second straight season by assisting the University of San Diego in
upgrading its facility it was announced today by Padres President Buzzie Bavasi.
The Padr~ will be working in conjunction with USD President Author E. Hughes
and its baseball coach John Cunningham to make available the necessary funds to putting
in permanent seating to complete the Toreros campus facility.
Last season the Padres worked with San Diego State University to put in lights
at Smith Field on the SDSU campus, making it one of the finest college facilities on
the West Coast.
"We have always believed in helping in situations such as those at San Diego
State and USD where the entire community can benefit in the long run," commented
Bavasi. "Now, the school can have a complete facility and, at the same ti.me, be able
to offer an attractive field for summer programs, high school baseball tournaments
and CIF playoffs.
"Additionally, we will be looking forward to using the facility from time to
time come next spring just before we take off for spring training," concluded the
Padre President.
University of San Diego President Hughes expressed gratitude towards the Padres
f or the assistance.
"USD has been gratified by the interest of San Diegans in our outstanding
baseball program. Gifts from the community made our fine baseball diamond possible and now the assistance of the Padres is completing a 14-year dream of of having adequate seating which will further enhance his facility. "
