Antimodernism and Genre from Country-Rock to Alt.Country, 1968-98 Jason Bianchi Kirby San Jose, California B.A. Sociology and Literature, University of California—Santa Cruz, 2002 M.A. American Culture Studies, Bowling Green State University, 2006 A dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia August 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a cultural history exploring expressions of and responses to antimodernism within country-rock and “alternative country” music, drawing on reception history, intellectual history of underground and mainstream left-wing American political movements, interview discourse with artists, and close readings of songs. In this dissertation I argue that despite styling itself as a type of purer root or “folk” form of contemporary country music, in terms of its ideologies, studio production techniques, fan and critical discourse, and business practices, alt.country is a type of rock music. It embodies some of rock’s core beliefs, particularly rock’s critique of the more bureaucratic and “rationalized” dimensions of postindustrial capitalism, particularly as this relates to the everyday impact of new technologies. I argue that this anti-modernism, emerging here from the American political left, has been different in different eras, from the back-to-the-land movement of the late 1960s, to late- ‘80s/early-‘90s expressions of left populist punk’s longing for “folk” community. In this project I look beyond contemporary scholarly understandings of alt.country as mostly ironic, as ultimately I suggest that this music illustrates what Keir Keightley calls rock’s aesthetic of “seriousness,” more precisely than it does an understanding of country music ideology.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

  • The Slummers Love of the Amateur Blue Rose Records
The Slummers Love Of The Amateur Blue Rose Records Dan Stuart ! Or the wondrous musical resurrection of a formerly influential desert rock band leader, after years of withdrawl into an early retirement. The founder and bandleader of Green On Red decided in the mid 90s to never have anything to do with the Rock’n Roll business again, moved from Tucson, Arizona to Madrid the exile of personal choice……and after all has been back for the past few years with not just one but several brilliant projects: first a short but all the more impressing reunion with the mentioned Green on Red (incl. Chuck Prophet), then the a lot more elaborate reactivation of Danny & Dusty , another very successful cult band of the 80s with Steve Wynn, and now THE SLUMMERS , his newest baby making the first statement with the debut record Love Of The Amateur ! The Slummers certainly doesn’t consist of just Dan Stuart, but matured in the about one year start-up phase into a real band, where one pinion fits perfectly into the other, where the single musicians complement each other with their abilities and add the peculiarities of their different cultural backgrounds. The Slummers are an intercontinental American/Italian entity with exactly defined and shared tasks. Stuart and his sideman for many years, the in No Depression/Alt.County/Guitar Rock circles well known producer and multi-instrumental JD Foster , are responsible for songwriting, guitars, and vocals, the two Italians Diego Sapignoli on drums and Antonio Gramentieri , composer, arrangeur, producer and multiinstrumentalist, are the backbone of the band.

"We got there at the [Omni] Berkshire [Hotel], and all our rooms got flowers and fruit—it's like, 'bad move, guys,’” he says recalling the accident. By the time Stinson finishes making himself at home, it costs $1,000 to replace a broken window, door and phone. The carnage isn't major, but doesn't endear the Replacements to Saturday Night producer Lorne Michaels, who vows, “No band from Warner Brothers is playing on my show again unless you guys pay for it.” Warner Brothers antes up without fuss. "We were a troublesome bunch,” says Stinson. "They picked us up in the stock limousine. They knew we were going to immediately start drinking, which we did. And they wouldn’t let us off the floor — ‘Anything you need, let us know’- and it’s like, ‘Okay, gimme about four (studio) pages and I'll feel better.' Yeah, we were totally abusive of their privileges.” Later that night, Stinson and company—his bassist/brother, Tommy, singer/guitarist, Paul Westerberg; and drummer Chris Mars—throw timing and tuning aside during "Bastards Of Young" and "Kiss Me On The Bus” in a classic clip reflecting a long day of mismatched sensibilities and mutual hostility.

"One of rock's true heroes of the underground." - Philadelphia Weekly "The ex-Dream Syndicate frontman's a veritable Ph.D. of timeless rock songcraft" - Chicago Tribune "A force to be reckoned with and cherished." - London Sunday Times "No contemporaries make classic rock records like Wynn" - AllMusicGuide.com "A first-class songwriter in the simple-yet-profound tradition of Lou Reed, Neil Young and post-Beatles John Lennon, [with] an ear for balancing his pop sensibility with artful dissonance." - PopMatters.com In 25 years, Wynn has released at least that many albums and has seen over 300 of his songs recorded. He has played over 2000 shows in more than 25 countries. His songs have been recorded and/or performed by REM, Luna, Concrete Blonde, The Black Crowes, Yo La Tengo and Eleventh Dream Day, among others; his "That's Why I Wear Black" became the #1 single of 1993 in Norway as the leadoff track from the debut album by Somebody's Darling. He has been prominently featured in Rolling Stone, Mojo, Uncut, Entertainment Weekly, People, The Los Angeles Times, New York Times and countless other publications all over the world. Or maybe you know Wynn from his groundbreaking work with The Dream Syndicate, a band that--along with REM and the Replacements--practically invented the American indie rock scene of the 1980s. Perhaps you know Wynn from his critically acclaimed solo albums of the 1990s which were fixtures on many Modern Rock radio stations across the country. Or it could be from his highly touted side-project Gutterball which by its fifth gig found itself signed to Mute/Elektra and on a national tour with The Black Crowes.
