    MEDIA RELEASE MALAYSIA’S CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA IN MAY & JUNE Be enthralled and entertained by the sensational month­long cultural extravaganza, Colours of Malaysia 2004, which runs from 22 May to 19 June. Also known as Citrawarna Malaysia 2004, this celebration promises to satisfy the appetite for local arts and crafts, traditional music, exotic dance, traditions and food of diverse cultures. The event, first held on 16 October 1999, is an annual event highlighting the cultures and traditions of the country. Colours of Malaysia 2004 kicks off with a spectacular launching ceremony on 22 May themed “Waves and Colours”, a colourful multi­cultural parade that showcases the dazzling cultural heritage of the different states of Malaysia. At approximately 8.30pm, some 6,000 participants from all over the country will put up a colourful display of ethnic dances and musical performances at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. His Majesty, the King of Malaysia will launch Citrawarna Malaysia 2004 in the presence of dignitaries including the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, foreign ambassadors and members of the international and local media. 1 Malaysians and foreign tourists are also expected to be present to add to the merriment of the event. In conjunction with the month­long celebration, a host of exciting activities at the national and state level have been lined up for May and June. Each activity offers visitors an insight into the unique cultural heritage of the multi­racial composition of Malaysia. KUALA LUMPUR In the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, the Gordang Sembilan, an arts performance of the Mandaling society, which is popular in Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and Perak, can be seen at Laman Seni, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on 29 May.

    THE SAMBALIZING OF IDENTITIES AMONG ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS IN POST-COLONIAL MALAYSIA By Kaliamma Ponnan A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Curriculum, Instruction and Teacher Education - Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT THE SAMBALIZING OF IDENTITIES AMONG ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS IN POST-COLONIAL MALAYSIA By Kaliamma Ponnan This study is an exploration of the English language learning experiences of four Malaysians who were students in the U.S. at the time of the research. They represent the three main ethnic groups in Malaysia, namely the Malays, Chinese, and Indians. The objectives of this study were to explore the ways in which the factors surrounding students’ homes, schools, and social realms impacted the construction and reconstruction of their identities as learners and users of the English language. It also looked at how these attributes further shaped their notions of their ethnic, national, and global identities. This study was undertaken with the notion that students’ voices are sometimes ignored and unheard, and that hearing them often leads to valuable pedagogical awareness. I conducted this study of lived experiences using Clandinin and Connelly’s qualitative narrative inquiry methodology (2000) and phenomenological interviews to obtain data. I gathered students’ lived experiences using the three-dimensional inquiry spaces of temporality, sociality, and place and looking at narrative as both the method and the phenomena under investigation. I analyzed, interpreted, and retold these personal narratives in relation to their social significance. The findings from this study suggest how a gradual flexibility in the construction of students’ identities as English language learners bears upon their current conceptualizations of their ethnic, national, and global identities.
