Landmarks Preservation Commission December 15, 1998, Designation List 300 LP-2027 GORHAM BUILDING, 390 Fifth Avenue, aka 386-390 Fifth Avenue and 2-6 West 36th Street, Manhattan. Built 1904-1906; architect Stanford White of McKim, Mead and White. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 837, Lot 48. On September 15, 1998, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Gorham Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Seven witnesses representing Manhattan Community Board 5, the Murray Hill Association, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Beaux Arts Alliance, the Society for the Architecture of the City, the Municipal Art Society, and the Historic Districts Council spoke in favor of designation. The owner of the building submitted a letter asking that the hearing be adjourned to another date. The hearing was closed with the proviso that it could be reopened at a later date if the owner wished to testify. The owner subsequently declined to do so. There were no speakers in opposition to this designation. The Commission also has received a letter in support of the designation from a local resident. Summary This elegant commercial building, constructed in 1904-05 for the Gorham Manufacturing Company, contained its wholesale and retail showrooms, offices, and workshops. Designed by Stanford White of the prominent architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the eight-story building is an adaptation of an early Florentine Renaissance sty le palazzo incorporating a two-story arcade, a four-story mid-section, and a two-story loggia. -

21&23 W 26TH ST NEW YORK, NY TWO HISTORIC ADJACENT COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS FOR SALE ASKING PRICE: $19,000,000 21&23 W 26TH ST PROPERTY DESCRIPTION Cushman & Wakefield has been exclusively retained to sell 21 and 23 West 26th Street, two historic adjacent office buildings in New York’s NoMad District. These side-by-side three story plus garden, penthouse and cellar buildings were designed by Thomas Stent and Peabody, Wilson & Brown and constructed in 1881 as the real estate office for brothers William Waldorf Astor and John Jacob Astor III. The Astor Family managed their immense real estate holdings out of these buildings until the elder son, Vincent Astor died and left the buildings to his daughter who was married to millionaire communist, Corliss Lamont. When Lamont died, he bequeathed it to the U.S. Communist Party to use as their headquarters in the mid-1940’s. The exteriors have remained relatively untouched since 1881 and 1922, respectively, until a penthouse addition was placed atop of No. 21 in 1991. The interiors have been renovated and restored over the last 40+ years with the addition of an elevator, central air conditioning, new kitchens and toilets, but the original tiled floors, iron stair, paneled walls, office dividers, fireplaces and even door hardware are all still intact. The buildings combine for approximately 19,045 square feet (No. 21 being 9,290± SF and No. 23 being 9,755± SF), have one elevator inside of No. 23 and are interconnected on the front entryway of the ground floor only. Both buildings contain concrete-lined, walk-in vaults with massive steel safe doors where deeds and cash were stored by the Astor’s and now safeguard archived books. -

Built 1912-13; Herman Lee Meader, architect; New York Architectural Terra Cotta Co., terra cotta. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 609, Lot 7. On June 22, 2010, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 154 West 14th Street Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Three people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of New York Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, and the Historic Districts Council. Summary The 154 West 14th Street Building (1912-13), a 12-story speculative loft structure constructed for lawyer-banker and real estate developer Leslie R. Palmer, was the first completed New York City design by architect Herman Lee Meader, with whom Palmer collaborated on five projects. The building’s location at the prominent intersection of 14th Street and Seventh Avenue anticipated the southward extension of Seventh Avenue and its new subway line, and benefitted from its proximity and direct access to the Holland Tunnel and west side freight terminals. Arranged in a tripartite base-shaft-capital composition with large window areas, it is a striking and unusual example of a large loft building partly clad in terra cotta – on the three-story base, on the spandrels between the white-brick piers of the midsection, and on the upper portion. -

February 22, 2018 14th Street Corridor Traffic Analysis Overview Introduction In late October 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City and left 43 New Yorkers dead, 2 million people without power, flooding in 17% of the city affecting some 90,000 buildings, and $19 billion in damages to the City alone. The effects of the extensive damage to the subway system serve as a reminder of Sandy’s huge impact. All six of the MTA-NYCT’s East River subway tunnels were inundated with storm water surges, corroding the various mechanical, electrical and communications components with saltwater. The 92-year-old tubes of the Canarsie Tunnel, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan via the L Line, were flooded with seven million gallons of salt water. While the tubes were drained and service was restored just 10 days after the storm, it was clear that a full reconstruction of the tunnel was required. Service Planning for the Canarsie Tube Closure Starting in April 2019, the 15-month closure of the L train’s Canarsie Tunnel will directly affect 275,000 daily customers. While MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) have been working together to provide alternatives and new travel options, it is difficult to overstate the significant disruption and inconvenience being brought to the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. With most L commuters moving to other subways, even those New Yorkers who do not ride the L will see their commutes affected by the influx of L riders on their subway lines. -

SPOONER. the early Dutch colonial families the Van OF Rensselaers were the first to acquire a great landed estate in America under the "patroon" system; they were among the first, after the English conquest of New Netherland, to have their possessions erected into a "manor," antedating the Livingstons and Van Cortlandts in this particular; and they were the last to relinquish their ancient prescriptive rights and to part with their hereditary demesnes under the altered social and political conditions of modem times. So far as an aristocracy, in the strict understanding of the term, may be said to have existed under American institu- tions—and it is an undoubted historical fact that a quite formal aristocratic society obtained throughout the colonial period and for some time subsequently, especially in New York, — the Van Rensselaers represented alike its highest attained privileges, its most elevated organization, and its most dignified expression. They were, in the first place, nobles in the old country, which cannot be said of any of the other manorial families of New York, although several of these claimed gentle descent. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission March 12, 1q85; Designation List 176 LP-1274 B. ALTMAN & COMPANY DEPARTMENT STORE BUILDING, 355-371 ~ifth Avenue, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1905-1913; architects Trowbridge & Livingston. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan, Tax Map Block 864, Lot 1. On February 9, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation ComMission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the B. Altman & Company Department Store Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to April 13, 1982 (Item No. 2). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Five witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designa tion. Three representatives of B. Altman stated that while their preference was for no designation, they were not opposed to designation. A statement in favor of designation was received from Manhattan Community Board No. 5. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The dignified B. Altman & Company Building, located at the northeast corner of 34th Street and Fifth Avenue, is a di st inguished design by Trowbridge & Living ston and one of the flagship department stores of Fifth Avenu e. When the new B. Altman store opened in 1906, Fifth Avenue was essentially a small-scale street filled with shops catering to the upper crust of New York society. The opening of B. Altman catalyzed Fifth Avenue 1 s transformation into a grand boulevard lined with many large department stores serving a broad clientele. An Italian Renais sance palazzo type design, B. Altman is elegant but reserved, stately rather than flamboyant; it is a reminde r that the building was des igned to blend into a neigh borhood it then helped to transform. -
