Richard Berry, the writer of “Louie Louie”, headlines the Waterfront Blues Festival. While Berry was in town, the Oregon Historical Society honored him and members of the Kingsmen with the installation of a plaque at 411 S.W. 13th Ave, the original location of Northwestern recording stu- dios, where the Kingsmen’s epic hit “Louie Louie” was recorded on April 13, 1963. Berry wrote “Louie Louie” in 1955 in Los Angeles and recorded it with the Pharoahs as a calypso-tinged R&B number. In 1960, Seattle’s Rockin’ Robin Roberts covered it with the Wailers. The Kingsmen heard the Wailers version on a jukebox and decided to record it themselves. Paul Re- vere & The Raiders recorded “Louie Louie” at North- western the day after, for Columbia Records.

  • Producers BIO
PRODUCER's BIO BJ BAARTMANS Dutch multi talented musician/producer BJ Baartmans was born in 1965. In the early 80’s, as he began writing and performing his songs, he also developed a strong desire to record and capture this original music on tape. Armed with two cassette decks, a hi-fi and a radio shack microphone the possibilities to overdub guitar, vocal or drum parts to a simple song form opened up a fascinating world of sound for him. With his finger nail, he would tap out bass parts on the neck pickup of his Japanese Strat with all the treble rolled off, or construct rhythm parts with his mom’s frying pans (great cowbellsound) and salt shakers (shake it baby!), playing the part on one speaker, while recording a new instrument on the other. School days were soon to end.... Within a couple of years he managed to get his hands on a real Tascam four track cassette recorder, making man and machine a perfect match. Soon he added a budget Lexicon reverb and a real AKG mike and an endless stream of home made demos, with wild sound experiments and freaky little guitar symphonies began to appear. In the meantime, gigging, rehearsing and writing turned his love of rock, jazz, folk and blues music into a real job, with recording being still mostly a side project. But more and more, musician friends would ask BJ to help them make demos or self-released tapes. The art of production slowly revealed itself, as he learned to make better use of microphones and studio equipment and the manipulation sound.

May 2013 blank1 (Page intentionally left blank). May 2013 EDITORIAL Finally we meet again his issue of Sustain took longer than usual. Indeed, preparing T a specialized magazine for a de- manding readership is no child’s play, and that is the way we like it, even if putting everything together takes a couple of extra months. In this issue we have, as always, a little bit of everything mixed in. Research, work- shop techniques, innovation, reviews of lutherie books, the answers to our read- er’s questions, and even a touch of humor provided by luthier Alejandro Baccaglioni, telling us about the real customer com- ments heard in his workshop. I loved the one made by a customer complaining about his fretless bass playing out of tune. I have a piece of (probably) bad news, though. The intern quit last week. He said he wanted to work for a big corporation producing a fashion magazine or some- thing. He said he thought of me and of our readers as a bunch of nerds. “We are a bunch of nerds”, I answered. Well, good A beautiful Jolana guitar. More on it in the article about luck for him—let’s see if we can succeed in the National Museum of Music of Prague, from page 32 making a good magazine without that inval- uable help. You be the judge. Leo Lospennato is luthier, author of books on lutherie and chief editor of SUSTAIN Magazine. He lives in Berlin, Germany.
