David Bailey, Chairman Funded by: 1 Obituary MAURICE GARNER , COPE’S FIRST CHAIRMAN DIES AT THE AGE OF 91 It is with great sadness that we have to report that Hon Councillor Maurice Garner MBE died last month peacefully at the age of 91. Maurice was COPE’s chairman from our formation as a Registered Charity after Cambridge City Council disbanded Phoenix 2000 and a group of eighteen volunteers needed a leader to ensure the future of our older people’s group. He was honoured with an MBE for service to charities after Alice Zeitlyn organised an application before he retired from the position having led us to become a countywide organisation of nearly 3,000 members. It was hard to believe that Maurice was one of the longest surviving members of the Zipper Club having had a triple heart bypass during his year as Mayor of Cambridge back in the year of the Silver Jubilee more than 40 years ago.
