Southport Air Show graces our skies in September, with three days of spectacular aerial displays taking place over miles of golden sand and across the sea.

Southport sits at the top end of a 22-mile stretch of beach, with sand dunes stretching back all the way to Crosby (just north of ). On Southport’s beach, you can find the UK’s oldest, and second longest, iron pier. Take a stroll along the beach or pier on a clear day and you will be able to spot North Wales, as well as the peaks of the Lake District. , the main bathing beach, is located just five minutes from Southport and has RNLI lifeguards on duty during the summer months. The dunes provide shelter and long stretches of beach create the ideal setting for a relaxed picnic or a spot of beach volleyball.

Another brilliant beach can be found in , ten minutes from Ainsdale. Here there is plenty of car parking and a backdrop of dunes and Pinewoods. WWT Wetland Centre is just a few miles from Southport. Swoop in and spend a few hours enjoying the peace and tranquillity of an attraction dedicated to the protection and study of wildfowl and other wetland creatures. There are nature trails, birdwatching hides and in the summer months you can take a canoe safari or guided boat tour. One of the centre’s most popular events is the Whooper Swan feeding sessions, taking place at around 3pm every day between November and March.

Not far from Martin Mere, Windmill Animal Farm opens a window onto the day-to-day life of a working farm, including meeting the farm’s lambs, goats and pigs. The farm also has three play areas, a play barn and pedal tractors.

Farmer Ted’s – a family attraction with soft play zones, café and farm animals for the children to meet - is also not far from these wild and wonderful attractions. Be warned if you find yourself there on an October evening though; the fun and friendly world of the farm is replaced by an ominous, terrifying land which will send even the brave running in fear.
