TEACHING METHOD: Once-a-week lectures (guest lecturers in weeks 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) combined with once-a-week labs. EVALUATION: Lecture grade (20%) based on a final exam, three grammar/style quizzes and six short paragraph assignments. Lab grade (80%) based on lab assignments. Emphasizes the techniques of investigative journalism, and understanding the relationships that develop between crusading reporters and government officials. Covers the following topics: (1) The historical roots of "muckraking" journalism in the United States; (2) The societal forces that contributed to the resurgence of investigative reporting in the early 1970s; (3) The nature and techniques of contemporary investigative stories, including (a) the various decision-making factors that arise in their selection and preparation; and (b) the use of documents, interviewing, data bases and other methods of investigative reporting; (4) The effects of investigative reporting on public opinion, and government policymaking. In sum, the course will explore the historical sources, contemporary methods and societal impact of investigative reporting and other reform-minded journalistic enterprises. PREREQUISITES: Junior or Senior Standing EVALUATION: Class attendance and participation, critical review of a muckraking article from journals published between 1900-1910, investigative reporting story pitch, team reporting project. Law discussion focuses on prior restraint, reporter's privilege, free press - fair trial controversies, defamation and invasion of privacy. Examines landmark court cases and discusses their societal significance and practical effects on journalists.

    March 10, 2013 THE SOCIOLOGY OF AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC (SOAP) UNIT 3 NOTES Rock and Roll 1 March 10, 2013 ROCK 'N' ROLL IN A HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT Changes in the 1940s-1950s: Beginnings of Desegregation and Expanded American World View - in the years following WWII, returning veterans represented a wide range of races and ethnicities - President Harry Truman desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces in 1948, the beginning of the government's total desegregation at all levels of society - many returning soldiers brought brides home with them from overseas - many GIs began to share their broader world view, discoveries, and experiences with their friends and families - these factors contributed to a subtle but growing interest in other cultures - Americans were now becoming "more worldly," more accepting of people from backgrounds other than their own The Booming Postwar Economy - economy was strong in the U.S. after the war, and there was a growing belief that education was the key to future success - federal govt. responded in two important ways: 1) "GI Bill" was passed, providing funds to support veterans financially as they pursued their education; 2) federal and state funds set aside to build colleges/universities - there was a philosophical shift to providing higher education opportunities for all people, regardless of socioeconomic class - combination of a thriving economy and memories of the dreary, demoralizing Great Depression of the 1930s reinforced a collective hope in 1950s' adults to create a better world and future for their

For nearly 20 years, Alma Guillermoprieto CILAS, along with the Center for Latin American 10 Salsa Night at CILAS Studies (CLAS) at San Diego State University, has achieved consistent recognition and support from 11 CILAS Fellowships & Grants the U.S. Department of Education as one of the 12 Visiting Professors at CILAS nation’s leading centers for the study of Latin 13 New Courses on Latin America America. In conjunction with our designation as a 13 Where Are They Now... National Resource Center, CILAS and CLAS were awarded a $2.2 million grant in Title VI funds in 14 Visiting Scholars at CILAS support of our ongoing research projects, visiting Students entering CILAS’s M.A. Program from 2007 are 14 New CILAS Affiliated Faculty professorships for Latin American scholars, (alphabetically): Stephen Cook, Jessica Córdova, Kimberly Dodge, 15 Affiliated Faculty Publications conferences, graduate student fellowships, outreach Sara Kozameh, Cory Molzahn, Jessica Novak, Annie Nyborg, Jessica Sisco (not pictured), Erica Skog, Laura Vázquez, and events, film series, and lecture series.
