Simon Templar Still LivesBy John J. PocsikLeslie Charteris, a dynamic young Englishman, created one of crime fiction's most memorable characters - the mocking, ruthless, amoral Simon Templar aka "Sebastian Tombs" aka "The Saint"in the late 20s. The early Saint was indeed a "modern Robin Hood," robbing the criminal underworld for his own personal gain. In novels like "The Last Hero" and "The Saint In New York" (two amazing fictions filled with violence, humor and tragedy - Simon's character developed by leaps and bounds. When WW2 broke out, Charteris had Simon emigrate to America where he worked against the Naziis. As the 50s loomed on the horizon, Charteris - perhaps mirroring elements in his own wanderlust life - fashioned Templar a well-known "citizen of the world" - always on the move, with no fixed location or love. The stories in SAINT ERRANT are from this latter period and are among the best (including the last one in the book, where Simon is killed).Read and your own risk: like popcorn or shrimp or MMs, you can't stop with just one.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very compelling!By Carol KiekowThis collection of short stories is very interesting and fun to read, although the last one is a departure from the usual fare. I heartily recommend this book to all fans of The Saint. Nine classic adventures for the Saint in which he finds out whether the female of the species really is more deadly than the male. About the AuthorLeslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint.He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. They’ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement.     Saint Joseph's University Semester Abroad Policy Please be advised that starting with the fall 2003 semester, the following policy will be in effect for Saint Joseph’s University students who wish to study abroad and receive credit toward their Saint Joseph’s degree. Under this policy, students will remain registered at SJU and pay SJU full-time, day tuition plus a $100 Continuing Registration Fee for each semester they will be studying abroad. Students will be considered enrolled at Saint Joseph’s University while abroad and will be allowed to receive his/her entire financial aid package. Saint Joseph’s University will then pay the overseas program for the tuition portion of the program. Students will be responsible for all non-tuition fees associated with the program they will be attending. Please note that for some Saint Joseph’s University affiliated programs, students may be required to pay other fees to Saint Joseph’s University first and Saint Joseph’s University will then forward these fees to the program sponsor. Students must receive proper approval for their proposed program of study.     SESSION 20 SPEAK GOAL The goal of this is session is for the teens to see the communion of saints as their extended family, to understand what it means to be a witness of the faith, and to get to know a few modern saints. KEY CONCEPTS Confirmation calls us to be witnesses of faith and provides us with the graces to do so. Being a witness means being a martyr; martyrdom does not necessarily mean dying for the faith, but requires a willingness to sacrifice and suffer for truth. When learning how to become better witnesses, we should look to the examples of other members of the Church — particularly Mary and the saints. KEY TERMS Martyr: A witness to the truth of the faith, in which the martyr endures even death to be faithful to Christ.
