Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012. -

The Dutch actor even contributed his own infinitely quotable couplet to the film’s epochal “tears in rain” scene, a moment as iconic as Casablanca’s “Here’s looking at you, kid”. 12/37 The Vanishing Screenplay: Jean-Claude Carrière at BFI Southbank in July 2012 The contribution of the writer is often overlooked in cinema, yet it’s inseparable from the creative process of filmmaking. This season lauds an ‘invisible giant’ of European cinema, screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. He is also a novelist and essayist, cartoonist and sometime director and actor, and has recently collaborated with director Michael Haneke on the script for The White Ribbon (2009) and appeared in Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy (2010). He is probably best known for his working relationship with Luis Buñuel, who both co-scripted most of the titles of the great Spanish director’s French period. Carrière’s films for Buñuel include the erotic psycho-fairytale Belle de Jour (1967), the surreal The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and the deliciously satirical The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), released in cinemas nationwide on 29 June for its fortieth anniversary by Studiocanal and the ICO. It will also be screened as an extended run as part of the season. BFI Southbank is delighted to announce that Carrière will give an on-stage introduction to a preview screening of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie on Thursday 28 June. International collaborations for Carrière followed in the late-70s and 80s. These include acclaimed literary adaptations of sprawling and seemingly un- adaptable works for directors like Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum, 1979), and Philip Kaufman (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1988) and also his dream- like rendering of Proust in Swann in Love (1984). This last film was co-written with Sir Peter Brook, whose earlier work with Carrière included The Mahabarata and presaged an extended departure from screen to stage writing. -

Shakespeare's Humanizing Language in Films and TV Series Sarah Hatchuel, University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 Abstract If Harold Bloom presented Shakespeare, in a rather essentialist way, as the author who invented the Human, US television series project Shakespeare as a playwright who conveys a humanity in constant redefinition, reconstruction and reassertion. Shakespeare is not mobilized to define the Human in a fixed way, but rather contributes to an extension of what we consider human. In such science fiction series as Star Trek, Person of Interest or Westworld, Shakespeare's words become the signs through which machines and robots reveal that they are becoming human or rather that they had always already been human. This dialogue between Shakespeare and "post-human" series echoes that established in The Elephant Man filmed in 1980 by David Lynch, a director who has invested the fields of both cinema and television. Humanizing the Post-Human This essay explores scenes from films and television series in which Shakespeare's sixteenth- century language is appropriated by so-called "freaks" or post-human androids; it argues that Shakespeare's words contribute to constructing a humanizing perspective on what could first appear "alien." In a 1999 book entitled Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, Harold Bloom presents Shakespeare as the author who invented the "Human" through characters who thought aloud, reflected on their actions and revealed their psyches to us: Shakespeare would have engendered what we conceive as psychological inwardness and would thus have literally created the way we think about ourselves as humans and as subjective beings. -

Juliette has just been released from prison after serving a long sentence. Léa was still a teenager when Juliette, a doctor, was convicted of the murder of her six-year-old son. Léa contacted Juliette when she was released and suggested that Juliette come to live with her. Juliette had no particular desire to see her sister again. Luc (Serge Hazanavicius), Léa’s husband, is quite reserved, almost hostile, about Juliette’s presence under their roof. -
