James Tomkins, BA Hons, MS, PhD, Chancellor PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATE FOR HONORARY DEGREE Presented by Harold Riemer, BEd, MEd, PhD, Dean, Kinesiology and Health Studies Tewodros (Ted) Jaleta Ted Jaleta was born into a farm family in Dangur, Ethiopia. His mother and father could not read or write, but they believed that education would change their son’s life. After high school, Jaleta studied graphic arts at Kenya Polytechnic in Nairobi, Kenya. He also joined a track club and had dreams of competing at the Olympics. That dream ended when he was arrested demonstrating against leaders of the coup that overthrew Ethiopia’s last Emperor. He was imprisoned, miraculously escaping death, and then spent four years in a refugee camp in Sudan before escaping to Kenya. He applied to move to Canada and was accepted in 1982. Jaleta credits his running for helping him make the transition to his new life. He remains grateful to Canada and Saskatchewan for his second chance at life. He became a Canadian citizen in 1985. He attended the University of Regina from 1987 to 1989 in the Bachelor of Arts program. He has worked for the Canada Revenue Agency since 1991. Jaleta is a well-known community volunteer and leader, high-performance athlete and coach, and motivational speaker. He credits his mother’s example as a community leader and her belief in the value of education for his passion for lifelong learning and giving back to the community. Jaleta coached the U of R’s men’s and women’s track and field and cross-country teams from 2004 to 2007, and has coached a distance running club – the Jaleta Pacers – since then. Besides running, the members of the Pacers participate in 1 fundraising activities to assist Saskatchewan children and youth to overcome barriers and achieve their potential. Jaleta was named SaskSport Master Athlete of the year in 1997 and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. A book about his struggles and achievements, Never Give Up, was published in 2006. He fulfilled his dream of carrying the Olympic torch in 2010, near Swift Current, Saskatchewan. CONFERRING OF HONORARY DEGREE R. James Tomkins, Chancellor of the University of Regina, will confer upon Tewodros (Ted) Jaleta the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. SIGNING OF HONORARY DEGREES REGISTER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT BY HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Dr. Ted Jaleta PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATE FOR HONORARY DEGREE Presented by Sheila Petty, BA Hons, LèsL, MèsL, DEA, Doctorat, Dean, Fine Arts William Shurniak Bill Shurniak was born on the family farm at Limerick, Saskatchewan. He began working for the Imperial Bank of Canada (now CIBC) after high school, moving to various locations in Canada. He spent two years as manager of CIBC’s main office in Kingston, Jamaica, and then transferred to Hong Kong, where he headed up the bank’s operations in the Asia-Pacific region. Shurniak left the bank to become executive director and chief financial officer of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., a Hong Kong-based conglomerate with operations in more than 50 countries. He retired in 1997, but moved to Adelaide, Australia, a few years later to become chairman and director of three electric distribution companies. He moved back to Canada and took up residence on the family farm at Limerick in 2005. Since returning to Canada, he has served on the advisory board of the Ivey Business School at Western University, as director of Trans Canada Trail and as a trustee of the Saskatchewan Foundation for the Arts. He built the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia to house his growing art collection. He also wanted to give back to his home province and community. He was awarded the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal when the gallery opened in 2005, and he continues to donate his time to its daily operations. Shurniak has received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Western Ontario (now Western University), the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Although he says he is officially retired, he continues to serve as a director of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and as director and deputy chairman of Husky Energy Inc.
