The Rise and Fall of The NEW Four Seasons 1966 to 1977 Chapter 1111————ClosureClosure So in 1982 Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons collapsed along with the fan clubs. But it wasn’t the end…… Valli is from tough stock and his response reflects his years ‘locked into’ being a performer……work was perhaps his escape…..”…”That was the toughest I’ve ever had to go through in my whole life. I was screwed up for a long time after that. My doctor thought it would be in my best interests to continue working. I’m glad I did. I don’t think I’d make a good recluse.” The attempts at a return to former glories would fail. Gery Polci and Don Ciccone left the group. Valli could not offer them the money or the creative direction to stay. The un- released recordings, where not good enough to persuade a record com- pany to release them and promote an album, par- ticularly with the sad state of the record business. Crewe was gone; disillu- sioned by the way the re- cord business had changed. He no longer knew all the ‘execs’ and For many UK fans in 1971 it all started at Batley Variety Club the ‘suits’ who now held the key positions and dic- tated the music to be made. Charles Calello was an in demand arranger/producer having hits with Juice Newton…. And Bob Gaudio had dropped out of the music scene at this time. Frankie Valli re-formed the group as ‘Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons’ keeping Chuck Wilson and Robbie Robinson and Larry Lingle, and once again he picked out good session musicians, offering them a career on the road that would continue to give him an outlet for his Four Seasons and solo hits.

  • Lady Marmalade”—Labelle (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Adele Bertei (Guest Post)*
“Lady Marmalade”—Labelle (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Adele Bertei (guest post)* Labelle Labelle. Hear the name and most will immediately think of Patti LaBelle, diva supreme, but the story is far more profound than the connection suggests. Over the course of 16 years together, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, and Patti LaBelle created a musical legacy unlike any other group before or since. Patti’s incredible voice led the way, undoubtedly. But it was Sarah Dash’s sweet soaring soprano, the deep resonance of Nona Hendryx’s voice and lyrical imagination, and the utopian vision of manager Vicki Wickham that would ultimately result in the creation of the Labellian cosmology--a map of sonic starlight. In 1962, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were a traditional girl group with a few minor hits. Ten years later, they dropped the girl group tropes and became Labelle, reinventing the role of Black women in popular music as bona fide rock stars in 1974. The torque accelerating their ascendancy was a song called “Lady Marmalade.” Co-written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, “Lady Marmalade” is the story of a Creole sex worker strutting a solicitation--”Voulez vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?”--a phrase that became a French-language primer for every American in love with pop music. Any record company trepidation about presenting this brazen shout-out for Black women’s sexual agency to the listening world was extinguished by the undeniable brilliance of the recording. The song might not have been written by Labelle, but their delivery made it a worldwide sensation.

  • Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 22, 2010 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS FRANKIE VALLI & THE FOUR SEASONS FRIDAY, JUNE 25 Richmond, BC – Best known as the front man for the Four Seasons, Frankie Valli scored a total of twenty-nine Top 40 hits with the group and nine Top 40 hits as a solo artist. It was in the summer of 1962 when Valli and the band released the song, “Sherry” which was penned by songwriter, Bob Gaudio in just fifteen minutes. The song moved slowly until the group performed on American Bandstand … the very next day, it sold 200,000 copies catapulting Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons into superstardom. With “Sherry,” they had crystallized a distinctive musical style … the popular doo-wop music of the 50’s inflected with the rhythm & blues influences that would come to define much of the music of the 60’s. With Valli’s amazing falsetto as its trademark, the Four Seasons’ sound would become one of the most enduring in all of rock & roll. Over the next few years, they released numerous hits including “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl” and “Rag Doll.” In 1966, while remaining steadfastly devoted to the Four Seasons, Valli decided to branch out with his own solo album which featured the hit, “(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself.” That same year, he and the Four Seasons reached the #3 spot on the pop charts with “Let’s Hang On!” The following year saw Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” rise to #2 while “I Make A Fool Of Myself” and “To Give (The Reason I Live)” both became Top 40 hits.

  • Florida Studio Theatre to Hear Frankie Valli Tribute
STUNNING WESTIN L I V I N G E A C H M O M E N T “Who Loves You?” Apparently, lots of people! Sold-out shows at the Florida Studio Theatre to hear Frankie Valli tribute Booking nostalgic music in an area that skews older just makes good business sense. Well done, Florida Studio Theatre: The run of “Who Loves You”--featuring the music of the Four Seasons--was extended to keep up with demand. I love the concept: Have a nice meal, dab your chin and swivel toward the stage while you sip your coffee. Perfect. Or show up in time to just enjoy the show, your call. I’ve heard comedians joke about early start-times in Sarasota (“Bartender, bring me a coffee!”), and when I heard the curtain goes up at 6pm, I had to smirk. (Granted it was the first of two shows of the evening and both were sold out.) Erin and I were seated at a four-top directly in front of the stage, about 15 feet back where we met two nice women in their seventies. ** The Broadway musical, “Jersey Boys,” brought Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons back into the mainstream. I already like them, in fact I saw Frankie himself at the Van Wezel a couple times even before the success of the Broadway show. I was looking forward to this performance at FST. ** The show started strong with songs that gave me the chills: “Let’s Hang On,” “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “My Eyes Adored You,” and “Rag Doll” began the first set until they veered off into songs by Bobby Darin, Dion and a few others.
