2012 YEAR IN REVIEW Welcome

Dear Friends and Partners in BC Soccer, As we reflect on our collective soccer successes this past year, the BC Soccer family has once again shown the universal passion you have for our global game. The last 12 months have brought dramatic changes in the BC Soccer landscape reverberating from the all-important grassroots across new pinnacles of high performance player development all the way to the professional team level with Whitecaps FC and the National Team level with our Canadian Women’s National Team. During the past year, BC Soccer embarked on one of its most in-depth membership consultation journeys in association history en route to the Spring 2012 launch of the new Grassroots Development Service Plan, which, based on the vision of our Board of Directors, sees our Soccer Development Staff team deployed in enhanced ways including the support of 20 newly installed regional grassroots tutors to ensure you as the members receive the best soccer leadership and service, no matter where in beautiful you are located. In the high performance arena, the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL), as unanimously supported by the BC Soccer membership in early 2011, kicked-off its inaugural mini-season in fall of 2011 and is currently in full swing in its first complete season in 2012. While clearly still in its infancy, one can confidently assert that the league will create excellent developmental opportunities for BC players that strive to take their game to the highest level fuelled by the coming together of soccer leaders from all areas. As BC’s soccer team, Vancouver Whitecaps FC have started their MLS adventure in 2011, setting standards in commercial success and match attendance, while learning valuable lessons for future seasons on what it takes to put a squad on the pitch that can contend for a play-off spot in the future. One of our favorite football occasions this past year was hands-down the Canadian Women’s Team success in front of a passionate crowd of BC Soccer families at the new BC Place Stadium for the 2012 London Olympics by reaching the final of the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. With having also secured the privilege of hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™, we can proudly say that Vancouver/ BC is ready to play a major role as one of the host cities for the tournament. Football enthusiasts are already dreaming of Vancouver acting as home base for Team Canada in 2015. Just imagine the massively positive impact this will have in inspiring people to embrace lifelong active, inclusive, and team play in soccer in BC for years to come! With team play being at the heart of everything, we would like to applaud the efforts you as soccer leaders in BC at all levels continue to put forth. Without you there would be no game and all successes large and small are, ultimately, owed to the tremendous work the BC Soccer community is investing for its love of the game. As part of that, we would also like to thank and recognize the dedicated BC Soccer and Staff team, who continue to work hard to lead and manage BC Soccer on your behalf. Yours in Soccer,

This year LTPD saw tremendous advancement with the Canadian Soccer Association’s (CSA) release of the Wellness to World Cup Volume 2. With a more thorough breakdown of seven player developmental stages that are inclusive for technical, tactical, physical and mental training, it will serve as the national curriculum for all of our member clubs’ head coaches and technical directors to follow. As BC Soccer continues to be a national leader in our LTPD implementation, we conducted various consultation meetings with our membership to present the new curriculum and provide our recommendations and guidance on how their clubs can effectively introduce it to their stakeholders. To further ease the transition we also created a monthly LTPD Journal designed to supplement the material in the Wellness to World Cup Volume 2. BC Soccer will continue to implement the LTPD model for its programming.

Grassroots Development

BC Soccer is glad to announce the recent launch of its new framework, the Grassroots Development Service Plan for member clubs and district associations across British Columbia. The goal of this initiative is to provide our member clubs the opportunity to support their new coaches in effectively running their training sessions, giving coaches the ability to better deliver technical service and training sessions to their young players. Three age-specific workshops make up the framework; each three hours in duration. So far the launch of this new framework has been well received and our Soccer Development Department will continue to educate our membership about the Grassroots Development Service Plan into this upcoming year. Since the Fall 2011, we have made 32 presentations to over 250 technical and administrative staff of our member clubs in the following areas: Kootenay Rockies 4 presentations Lower Mainland 10 presentations Northern BC 8 presentations Thompson Okanagan 4 presentations Vancouver Island 6 presentations Grassroots Handbook

This Fall, the Grassroots Development Department produced a specific Grassroots Handbook for coaches working with the Active Start and Fundamental stages; as well as, revised its existing Grassroots Handbook to be more suitable for coaches working with players in the Learning to Train stage. The content provided within these handbooks is derived from the CSA’s Long Term Player Development vision and will assist coaches in delivering effective and responsible team programming. By providing a supplemental training curriculum that demonstrates how to successfully prepare and organize a practice, BC’s youngest players will receive higher quality coaching early on.

Developed in accordance with the CSA’s LPTD “Wellness to World Cup”, Soccer Science provides our membership with the relevant information and tools required to enhance our player’s performance through physical preparation; diet and nutrition; regeneration and recovery; and, injury prevention initiatives. This year’s programs and initiatives included: High Performance Service Plan

Over the past 4 years, BC Soccer Provincial Team Programs and the CSA National Training Centre Program West have been using the SPARQ Self-testing protocol. SPARQ, which stands for Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction and Quickness, includes five tests in its standard protocol: 1. Height / Weight 2. Vertical Jump Test 3. 20-meter sprint 4. Arrowhead Agility Test 5. Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test BC Soccer is glad to announce that this past year we integrated the protocol to our EA Sports BCSPL as the official fitness testing protocol for the league. As a part of that we: • Delivered the SPARQ Protocol to all EA Sports BCSPL Franchises, by reviewing it with approximately 120 Coaches • Developed physical preparation program for BC Soccer Provincial Team Programs and delivered the program to 144 players • Tested and conducted Medical Screening for 736 players across the BC Soccer Provincial Team Programs and CSA National Training Centre West

“Thanks to the introduction of SPARQ Self-Test protocol; we now have an opportunity to collect provide players and coaches with quality information on how to better train to improve physical SportMed Soccer

SportMed Soccer is a joint initiative between SportMedBC and BC Soccer. While the original vision for SportMed Soccer was to be an online resource library of soccer related information pertaining to sport medicine, sport science and sport training, SportMed Soccer now includes community workshops and seminars for parents, coaches and club officials along with an array of performance programs and services targeting BC Soccer’s Premier League. In addition, SportMed Soccer is responsible for providing medical coverage to BC Soccer’s Coaching and Player Development Programs. In the past year SportMedBC organized and provided medical coverage and managed the medical first aid equipment for 64 events, technical projects and courses.

Over the past year, our Goalkeeping Department produced a 3-stage specific curriculum that focuses on the fundamentals before moving on to more complex skills. Stages 1 and 2 concentrate on basic handling and goalkeeper movements while stage 3 places more emphasis on combining footwork with handling; as well as, introduces diving and high balls. This 3-stage curriculum is available in the updated Grassroots Manual. Following the same tune, development on a revamped BC Soccer Goalkeeper Level 1 Diploma Course is underway and set to launch in 2012. This past year we ran four Goalkeeping Diploma Courses under the old curriculum, reaching over 60 coaches. We also kicked off the goalkeeper aspect of the High Performance Service Plan with visits to BCSPL franchises. This provided another chance to assess and evaluate the goalkeepers within their own environments, and the clubs will be able to further develop their goalkeeping programs. This year we visited all eight BCSPL franchises and were able to assess over 100 goalkeepers through the course of these visits. EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League

The EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) is designed to support player development through increased competition for top soccer athletes. In February 2011, eight founding franchises in regions representing more than 80 percent of the BC population were announced (see logos below). Following this announcement, a preliminary "mini-season" took place from September through November to prepare for the full season commencing in February 2012. The league features divisions in the U-13 through U-18 levels. Moving forward, competition will run from February through November each year. Thompson Okanagan

The Referee Development Program prospered throughout 2011. By continually educating referees and reinforcing the importance of the fundamentals, British Columbia has been recognized by both the CSA and internationally for having quality referees from grassroots to top levels. Instructor Assessor Symposium

Annually, BC Soccer trains instructors and assessors on the methodology of instruction, communication and the learning process. Supplemented with educational materials, the Instructor Assessor Symposium enables instructors and assessors to teach new referees the practical applications of the Laws of the Game. This year we trained instructors and assessors in all regions of our province: Region # of Assessors # of Instructors Trained Trained Kootenay Rockies 4 3 Lower Mainland 23 10 Northern BC 4 3 Thompson Okanagan 6 3 Vancouver Island 13 4 TOTAL 50 27

2011 ASSESSMENTS: 226 Lower Mainland 25 Northern BC Assessment Program

The Assessment Program is the practical ongoing education of referees in game situations. As a part of the Program, assessors provide immediate feedback to referees after a match; as well as, a written review of their strengths and areas for improvement based on core competency standards. While conducting these assessments assists referees with their individual development, it also creates uniformity in applying the Laws of the Game and provides criteria in which to rank referees on. Candidates Program

Designed for aspiring referees to refine their skills, the Candidates Program provides on and off field training and educational sessions to referees on a bi-weekly basis throughout the year. By providing a positive, educational, and referee specific learning environment, candidates can progressively work to climb the provincial referee ladder as they ultimately seek to obtain national and/or FIFA referee status. With a pay-it- forward mentality, those who graduate the Candidates Program are able to continue to advance refereeing in BC by becoming a referee instructor and/or assessor. This year we hosted a series of Program Sessions for 93 candidates based out of Kelowna, the Lower Mainland, and Victoria.

Provincial Teams Program

BC Soccer’s highly successful Provincial Teams Program (PTP) has been responsible for developing numerous players for both the men’s and women’s CSA National Teams Programs; some of which include current members Christine Sinclair, Sophie Schmidt, Brittany Timko, Josh Simpson, Adam Straith and Marcus Haber. The program has also been responsible for the placement of players at US and Canadian universities and serves as a key platform for the advancement and selection of BC players onto professional teams within our development partners, Vancouver Whitecaps FC. This past year there were 144 players from 14 clubs in 25 districts. CSA National Training Centre Program West

The National Training Centre Program West (NTC) is designed to provide a formative, structured path for which young elite players can prosper. Under the direction of qualified professional coaches, players are introduced to international soccer at the age of 15, and are projected to reach a stage of “international maturity” between the ages of 18-20 years. With the primary goal being to deliver quality, international- ready players to the Canadian Youth (U-20) Team, players at this level learn what is required of them, both physically and mentally, to perform consistently and successfully at the highest level. We are proud to report that in 2011 there were 80 players from nine clubs across the province involved with the NTC; 40 female and 40 male.
