• A Moon Shaped Pool
A Moon Shaped Pool Frank Houston It ended just like that. One day I was married, the next day I was taking down all the pictures of myself and my ex-wife to-be. The wedding photos, the beach getaway scenes, even the family portraits. The ending was like an ice shelf plunging into the Arctic: invisible but known forces roiling in the background until the day when something broke. She had moved out; I was there, picking up the pieces, stowing things in boxes I’d probably never open, making a small mountain of furniture and old electronics in my Radiohead living room, items to be retrieved by men in a truck from the thrift store. A Moon Shaped Pool I put the framed photographs in a box along with the wedding album and paraphernalia 05/2016 that we’d preserved: the program from the ceremony, with its poetry and literary passages praising love; the wedding invitation on midnight blue paper with gold stars XL and speckles; the invoices for the honeymoon suite and the reception DJ who, less than a year later, would be killed at his day job at Cantor Fitzgerald on 9/11. We had met in the fall of 1996 at a Web startup in Chelsea, and a few months later we fell hard for one another. One of many magnetic forces between us was music. Our tastes overlapped almost entirely—Beatles and Stones, The Who and Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye—but we also each brought something new to the other. I introduced her to Bowie.

This study participates in the burgeoning critical approach that places cognitive science in conversation with literary theory, looking towards the start of a cognitive turn in adaptation studies. Specifically, I offer the axiom that adaptations are analogies. In other words, I advance the original argument that adaptations are the textual expression of the cognitive function of analogy. Here, I’m using a cognitive theory of analogy as the partial mapping of knowledge (objects and relations) from a source domain to a target domain. From this vantage point, I reassess the theoretical tensions and analytical practices of adaptation studies. For instance, the idea of essence is an anathema within academic studies of adaptation, yet it continues to hold sway within popular discourse. My approach allows for a productive return to essence, not as some mystical quality inherent in an original text and then indescribably transmitted to its adaptation, but as the expression of a key sub-process of analogical reasoning – what Douglas Hofstadter refers to, conveniently, as “essence” or “gist extraction.” This line of argument demonstrates the degree to which André Bazin’s 1948 theorization of adaptation is in line with this cognitive version of essence.

©2020 Michael Seth Cudd ALL RIGHTS RESERVED FUNCTIONAL AND LENGTHY: PREVAILING CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN SUCCESSFUL LONG SONGS By MICHAEL SETH CUDD A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Music Written under the direction of Christopher Doll And approved by _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey May 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Functional and Lengthy: Prevailing Characteristics within Successful Long Songs by MICHAEL SETH CUDD Dissertation Director: Christopher Doll Successful long popular songs consistently utilize formal structures and compositional techniques that are inherently particular to them. As a result, these recordings differ in more ways than simply length, because there are “long song” characteristics that distinguish this music. In order to better discuss these characteristics, it was important to develop a method for visually depicting songs in a manner that clearly outlines each groove. These “groove analyses” are used to discuss each piece of music in detail. As a result, groove is a primary point of discussion throughout this study, because most long song characteristics are directly linked to this quality within music. This type of analysis is explained in detail, and afterwards, it is utilized throughout much of the dissertation. It is also hypothetically possible that the structures and techniques in question can impact the listener’s perception of time when used outside of the context of a long song. A simple experiment was run in order to better understand how these concepts influence a person’s sense of duration, and the results were promising and demonstrated trends that merit further research.

  • The Middle Ages of Postmodernism: Dante, Thom Yorke and Radiohead
Dante e l’arte 6, 2019 127-142 The Middle Ages of Postmodernism: Dante, Thom Yorke and Radiohead Giulio Carlo Pantalei Università Roma 3 [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5105-2527 Abstract The relationship between Dante and Radiohead has been intense and surprisingly enduring through the years: from the conceptual framework of OK Computer (1997) to the experi- mentalism of Amnesiac (2001), taking into account the Dolce Stil Novo motifs within In Rainbows (2007). The survey will try to retrace the imaginarium of the songwriter within the literary land of the Florentine Poet, exploring the thresholds and paratexts used to con- vey a modernization of the Commedia. An original interpretation of some among Radiohe- ad’s most acclaimed works, including 2+2=5 (The Lukewarm - Gli Ignavi) and Pyramid Song, will reveal the depth -also philogical and intertextual- of this cultural operation that ranges from the social commitment of the Sommo Poeta to a superhuman journey to Heaven «in a little rowboat» through a special guide which leads to Love in itself. Key Words: Dante Alighieri; Radiohead; Thom Yorke; Divina Commedia; Rachel Owen; English translations of the Divine Comedy.
