(A Biblical Perspective of Mary) Mark 7:6-9, 13; Colossians 2:8; I Timothy 2:5, 6 Introduction… The SOURCE of our authority, our Doctrine, our teaching is the WORD OF GOD (The Berean Believers - Acts 17:11-12). Matthew 15:3, 6; Mark 7:6-9, 13; Colossians 2:8 FIRST DOCTRINE: Mary, Mother of God This doctrine proclaims that Mary is the Mother of God. The logic here is simple: Since Mary is the mother of Jesus, and since Jesus is God, therefore Mary should be the Mother of God. The phrase "Mother of God" originated in the Council of Ephesus, in the year 431 AD. It occurs in the Creed of Chalcedon, which was adopted by the council in 451 AD. Let’s look at what the Holy Bible has to say: Mary certainly did not give birth to God. Jesus was actually older than Mary. The only thing Jesus got from Mary was a body. Hebrews 10:5; Matthew 1:18 SECOND DOCTRINE: Mary, Immaculately Conceived The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception declares that God preserved Mary from the stain of original sin at the moment she was conceived within the womb of her mother. It also declares that Mary remained sinless her entire life. In his Ineffabilis Deus in 1854, Pope Pius IX established as dogma the immaculate conception of Mary, which preserved her from inheriting original sin. Let’s look at what the Holy Bible has to say: After delivering Jesus, the Bible clearly states that Mary lived a normal married life with her husband, Joseph and had other children through Joseph. Matthew 13:55, 56 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us?...” Mark 6:3; Matthew 12:46; Mark 3:31; Luke 8:19; John 7:1-10; Acts 1:14; Galatians 1:19 FOURTH DOCTRINE: Mary, Assumed Into Heaven This doctrine teaches that Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, she was assumed (or raised) body and soul into heavenly glory. In other words, Mary didn’t have to wait for the Resurrection of the Body. She has her body, now, in heaven. The doctrine is based on the tradition that Mary, the mother of Jesus was bodily assumed into heaven. Let’s look at what the Holy Bible has to say: The Holy Bible does not state concerning Mary’s death and burial. If her assumption to heaven was a reality, the Bible writers would have definitely mentioned about her incident. (They even mention about the little known Eutychus in Acts 20:9, 10) Copyright © 2016 New Life Assembly of God Church, Secunderabad. By this we mean that Mary cooperated in an extraordinary way in the saving mission of Christ, who alone is the unique mediator between God and man. They teach: "He came to us through Mary, and we must go to Him through her." Every devout Catholic is taught to pray to the Virgin Mary. They pray to Mary, as though Mary were truly God with the attributes of the Deity – omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. Let’s look at what the Holy Bible has to say: I Timothy 2:5, 6. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. Hebrews 4:14-16; 9:15; 12:23, 24. About Mary of Rome and Mary of the Scriptures The Mary of the Bible is so different than the Mary of Rome. They are NOT the same. The Mary of the Bible There are no biblical examples of anyone ever praying to her, honoring her, or venerating her. She lived a normal life like any one of us – except she had the unique privilege to birth and raise God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Mary of Rome: Mary of Rome is considered a co-redeemer with Christ in His suffering on the cross, and is now a co-mediator alongside Him in heaven—essentially an alternative avenue of access to God. The Holy Scripture has NOTHING to say about all of this. During his earthly life, you never see Jesus address Mary as His Mother. Conclusion… So, is Mary, the Mother of God? Absolutely NOT. Nowhere in the Bible is Mary said to be the mother of God. “Jesus’s human nature had no father and His divine nature had no mother." Any teachings by the Church on any subject should be backed up by the Word of God. If it cannot be supported by Scriptures, it is false doctrine.
