Doctor Strange sends Spider-Man through time and space in order to help stop Dormammu. During his trip he encounters all of his greatest friends and foes. One of the hands down best Otto Octavius storylines and one of the last times he was relevant for nearly a decade, this story also is the groundwork for the budding romance between Black Cat and Spider-Man that took hold in the early s. Often an overlooked gem despite its immense historical impact on the webslinger. As the title says, it is back to the basics of what makes Spider- Man great and is the best the book has been in yeaaaars. The recent Venom film is based on this 6 issue miniseries and although it's not the greatest storyline, it is a pretty good solo outing for Venom and a good start to his run as an antihero. Mac Gargan is often regarded as one of the worst hosts for the Venom symbiote. And while I generally agree, this often overlooked 4-part miniseries really is something special. The miniseries is delightfully twisted and laugh out Comic Book Fever: A Celebration of Comics: 1976-1986: A Celebration of Comics funny. Venom Venom : Flash Thompson is given a chance to serve his country, on the condition he joins with the Venom Symbiote to become a hero once more.     Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.

This Planet is Under Our Protection” – An Exegesis of Superheroes’ Interrogations of Law Jason Bainbridge Abstract This paper examines concepts of authority, law, and justice in the genre of superhero comics. Despite the common view that comic book superheroes do not warrant (and have not received) significant academic attention except as art form (rather than social/legal commentary), they do, in fact, present a locus in which visions of law and its relationship with society are played out with a degree of intellectual and jurisprudential sophistication. This is because superheroes reflect perceptions of failed or deficient law. They are therefore another vehicle for thinking discursively about law because of what they can say about society and its perceptions of the effectiveness of law, in the context of their manifesting a pre-modern, sacralised, view of embodied justice as opposed to modern constructs of law. Using a typology of pre-modern, modern, and postmodern justice, the paper briefly explores the characteristics of justice found in superhero comics.

THE ALUMINUM AGE: POSTMODERN THEMES IN AMERICAN COMICS CIRCA 1985- 2018 by AMY COLLERTON Under the Direction of John McMillian, PhD ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to update the fan-made system of organization for comic book history. Because academia ignored comics for much of their history, fans of the medium were forced to design their own system of historical organization. Over time, this system of ages was adopted not only by the larger industry, but also by scholars. However, the system has not been modified to make room for comics published in the 21st century. Through the analysis of a selection modern comics, including Marvel’s Civil War and DC Comics’ Infinite Crisis, this thesis suggests a continuation of the age system, the Aluminum Age (2001-the present). Comics published during the Aluminum Age incorporate Postmodern themes and are unique to the historical context in which they were published.
