When you came to Lasell University, you did so with dreams for the future and plans to get there. As we all experienced, even the best of plans can go awry — but with a flexible mindset and innovative thinking, you navigated the storm, cleared the hurdles, and emerged stronger.
We may be seated six feet apart today, but as a community, we have never been closer. For you, the Class of 2021 — today is a day of victory.
Whether you spent your final months as a Lasell University student here on campus or gathered with classmates and faculty over Zoom, the end result is clear: You did it. Today is the first of many you will reflect upon in the future as a symbol of achievement.
As we emerge from the pandemonium of the pandemic, I hope that your next steps bend toward peace, empathy, and kindness — caring for yourself, and caring about others. We have proven throughout this year that when we act as if it isn’t just about us, but about everyone, we can rise above the chaos and find a way forward.
Together, we celebrate — we cheer, we clap, we cry tears of triumph — and we look ahead. Our admiration for your achievements, much like your future, knows no bounds. You are the pioneers in whose footsteps future generations will follow as you forge new paths for a better world.

2 Keynote Speaker: James E. Muller, M.D.
Dr. James E. Muller is an academic cardiologist, entrepreneur, and social activist who is also a longtime friend and neighbor of Lasell University. He has been a co-founder of three activities that grew to a global scale.
In 1980, Dr. Muller co-founded International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which was awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. Over a 20-year period he developed an FDA- approved device for detection of the vulnerable coronary plaques likely to rupture and cause heart attacks. In 2002, he founded Voice of the Faithful, a group of lay individuals dedicated to improving the Catholic church after the cover-up of sexual abuse of children. Voice of the Faithful has grown into a worldwide movement, with Dr. Muller’s experiences chronicled in his book, Keep the Faith, Change the Church.
Dr. Muller studied Russian language at the University of Notre Dame, and in 1967 took a 6-month leave from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to become the first medical exchange student in Russia during the Cold War. In 1972, he worked with then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s office to establish a health cooperation agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union. Dr. Muller’s and Dr. Bernard Lown’s friendships with Russian physicians led to the formation of the IPPNW and its subsequent Nobel Peace Prize. He remains connected to the cause today, and hopes to continue dialogue with today’s students about reducing the risk of nuclear war for future generations. In addition to his activism against the threat of nuclear war, Dr. Muller also participated in the 1965 Selma voting rights march led by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As a physician, Dr. Muller began his career as a cardiologist at the Brigham Hospital in 1973. He has served as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and as the CEO of Infraredx, Inc., a company he founded in 1999 to create a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) coronary catheter that would receive FDA approval in 2019. In 2017, Dr. Muller co- founded SpectraWAVE, Inc., to provide additional diagnostic capabilities for a coronary catheter.
Dr. Muller is currently the Chief Medical Officer of SpectraWAVE and a practicing cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

On behalf of the Lasell University Alumni Association, I want to welcome you into the Lasell University Alumni Network. You are now a member of this great community that will continue to support, mentor, and challenge you as you start your postgraduate journey.
You have all had to adapt over the last year in so many ways, but through it all, each of you never lost sight of your goals and dreams. As Lasers, we try, try, and try again and we keep trying until we triumph. You should all be immensely proud of your accomplishments.
No matter the next direction your life may take, know that you have a whole network of Lasell alumni ready and willing to help you navigate the journey ahead. Make courageous choices and take even bigger risks knowing you have our support each step of the way.

Academic “costumes” date back to medieval English custom when kings’ courts were closely associated with Oxford University and there was a deep connection with the church. The elaborate vestments identify the degrees, disciplines, and levels of achievement of the wearer. In the United States, the Intercollegiate Commission set the standards for academic costumes in 1894.
For bachelor’s or master’s degrees, the color of the gown is black with no trim. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front in black velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves. The color code is the same for all degrees; however, the width of the hood edging, hood length, and sleeve style vary. The doctor’s hood has edging 5-inches wide, a 4-foot hood length, and full, round sleeves. The master’s hood edging is 3-inches wide, and the hood is 3.5-feet long with long pointed sleeves. The bachelor’s hood edging is 2-inches wide, the hood measures 3 feet, and the sleeves are full-length square. The colors of the satin lining of the hood indicate the particular college or university that awarded the degree. Tassels for caps for all degrees may be black, with the exception of gold, which is most often worn for the doctor’s degree.

History of the Lasell University Banners
The Lasell University banners exemplify the rich tapestry of the institution. Class banners vary greatly with color, motto, and pattern chosen by each individual class. These banners have been a part of the University’s history since 1854. Early banners were typically designed with shields in red, white, and blue bearing class mottos; later, some were made of silk and occasionally embroidered. Class banners frequently provide insight into world events at the time of graduation. Many of Lasell’s banners have been preserved in the University’s Winslow Archives. Today, we proudly add the banner for the Class of 2021 to the collection as a way to proclaim the long and storied history of Lasell University.

Lasell is a 170-year-old innovative educational institution and dynamic environment that embraces challenges and forges direct connections with professional outcomes so that students in pursuit of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, in addition to professional certifications, are prepared to thrive in the 21st century.
Founded in 1851 as the Auburndale Female Seminary, Lasell was the first two-year college for women in the United States at a time when women faced limited educational opportunities. The school was renamed Lasell Junior College in 1932, and evolved into a four- year institution — Lasell College — in 1989. In 1997, Lasell became coeducational and shortly after, established Lasell Village, an on- campus continuing-care retirement community focused on lifelong education and intergenerational collaboration. The institution’s first graduate programs were launched in 2003.
In 2019, Lasell College became Lasell University. This latest chapter in our history is not a destination or an end point. Rather, it is part of an ongoing evolution that started in 1851 and continues to this day. In this unprecedented time of change, Lasell has flexed to meet profound new challenges in higher education and for those who seek its benefits.
Founder Edward Lasell strongly believed that students should be well-versed in both the liberal arts and the practical aspects of everyday life; in fact, early ads for the Seminary spoke of the school’s unique curricular approach of blending theory and practice. Today, we call this Connected Learning.
