The Smilezone Impact

Chemotherapy, treatments, hospital stays, and continuous visits can be a long and strenuous process; A physical, mental, emotional and financial burden for both a child and their family. Each Smilezone allows for a reprieve during those long and difficult days, an escape both mentally and physically for a child to look forward to from their life battle.

Each Smilezone aims at impacting children getting treatment, siblings, and family members in overcoming their loved one’s challenges, always sharing with them the universal sign of happiness… a smile.

“Our Smilezone makeover is nothing short of spectacular! The area is brighter and more inviting than we ever dreamed it could be. The treatment rooms are so colourful and detailed, the children and parents just love them! The common room is much better laid out for space and activities. All around amazing transformation of a previously “hospital-like” space.” - Nurse Practitioner, Northeast Cancer Centre, Sudbury, ON

“We started visiting KidsAbility earlier this year for my 18-month old daughter, as she was not hitting the speech and language milestones expected for a child of her age. Along with us came our rambunctious, curious 6-year old son. Both children settled in right away in the lobby of KidsAbility. They loved exploring the space and in particular, spent a lot of time with the "magic floor." They were amazed at the ever- changing display on the floor and their ability to kick the leaves, reveal the hidden dog, or cause ripples in the water. It was great that both kids could enjoy the space so much!” - Parent, KidsAbility Centre, Waterloo, ON

"My daughter Pip is no stranger to hospitals. Having over a dozen surgeries, a Rolodex of specialist appointments every month & therapies weekly, waiting rooms are her playground. Waiting rooms are her safe place within a building that typically can be quite scary. Waiting rooms have calmed her down, made her happy, helped to make her feel comfortable & have in essence been a place for her to play. When Smilezone re-created the spaces my daughter knew, it was amazing to see the difference in her. The spaces were fun, bright and colourful & gave her a space with so much more to do. Smilezone helped create this beautiful zone within a place that kids truly need it, just for them." - Parent, Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, ON

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Smilezone? A Smilezone (or “Zone”) provides a safe, warm and accessible space in a healthcare facility for children and families to enjoy together. Zones can be constructed in existing waiting rooms, chemotherapy and treatment rooms, and custom patient care spaces created for a specific facility. These transformations include supervised and unsupervised areas that are fully customized based on the needs of children and families that use the space on a regular basis. We offer inclusive and interactive opportunities to children of all abilities by uniquely incorporating accessible technology and sensory features in our Zones. Zone features may also include fresh paint, bright murals, custom cabinetry, entertainment units, and more.

What is the Smilezone Process? Each Smilezone is fully customized to ensure smile satisfaction. A collaborative and client-centred approach to each Zone design is our top priority. The Smilezone Team will coordinate, design, and evaluate target Zones in partnership with each organization’s interprofessional staff team and local funding partner, in order to best identify the needs of clients and the community. After months of planning, Zone transformations take place entirely over one weekend, from set-up to clean up – children, families and staff are blown away by the big changes they see when they walk in Monday morning!

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Zone? Smilezone Foundation truly believes that you cannot put a price on a smile! Zones are designed to fit the unique needs of each partner facility and its clients, as well as local funding partners, which means that costs will vary from build-to-build depending on the scope of work required. Smilezone works diligently with our facility partners and local funding partners to set a budget that will allow every child who visits the Smilezone an opportunity to smile!

How are Smilezones Evaluated? The success of each Zone is measured through a 3-month and 1-year report completed by hospital/organization officials. Specifically, the 3-month report collects quantitative data showing how many people use, interact and enjoy the Zone, as well as involves testimonials from clients and professionals. Progressing, the 1-year follow up report again measures how many people are using and enjoying the Zone, but through more extensive documentation.

Where Can I Find a Smilezone in my Community? As of 2017, Smilezone Foundation has transformed more than 130 Zones in dozens of communities across Ontario! Thousands of children and families access our Zones on a daily basis, bringing smiles to their faces every time they walk through the door. A full list of our completed Zones and upcoming installations can be found on our website, at www.smilezone.com
