Travel booklet Summer term 2021

Travelling to and from school

Introduction The Grammar School at (GSAL) is committed to providing a range of safe and environmentally sustainable options for travelling to school and encouraging pupils to walk, cycle or use public transport.

We run the UK’s largest school bus service covering Leeds, West and North , which enables hundreds of our pupils to get to and from school safely every day. We have planned our service for the autumn term 2020 in response to the government, Public Health and Department for Transport guidance to minimise the risk of COVID-19 infections.

We have had to reduce the capacity of our vehicles with the resulting changes to our service for autumn term 2020 only or until government guidance changes: • The service will prioritise senior school pupils • Primary pupils in Year 3 and above may travel only if accompanied by a senior school sibling

We have also enhanced our traffic management systems for those who have to drive to school. We have installed a new express lanes zone in front of our remodelled Primary School and made improvements to the main off drop zone in the visitor car park. These changes plus enhancements to the road layout and the installation of traffic lights will help the flow of traffic on site, and also ensure that cars can enter and leave school safely, and easily.

We will be regularly reviewing all of our travel arrangements in response to guidance from government and other statutory bodies, and to meet the requirements of the school and its pupils.

Travel options

Driving to school Drivers must enter school via the main gates on Harrogate Road and travel along the drive to the appropriate drop off or parking area. Vehicular access to Manor House Lane is for residents only.

The lanes on the drive are clearly marked and flow of traffic will be controlled by a traffic light system. Please ensure that the yellow box area at the junction is kept clear at all times.

o Sixth form drivers Sixth form students who drive themselves to school are not permitted to park on site.

o Parent drop off and parking areas In order to ensure the smooth flow of traffic around the site, particularly at peak times, we ask parents to use the relevant drop off zone rather than to park for extended periods. Parents may drop off in one of the following three areas: 1. Express lanes zone (in front of Primary School) • We have created a new area where parents can drop their child off safely and quickly, and immediately leave the school site. • It will operate from 07:30 to 08:30 • There will be three lanes which can accommodate 12 cars at any one time. • This zone is only for pupils who can exit the car quickly and make their way independently to Primary or Senior School.

2. Main drop off zone (in the visitor car park area) • It will operate from 07:00 to 08:30 • This zone is for any pupils who need time to safely exit the car and who can walk to school from their car independently.

3. Short stay zone (in the visitor car park area) • It will operate from 07:00 to 08:30. • This area is for parents who need to park for a short period of time whilst they accompany their child to school playgrounds or buildings. • There are accessible parking places in this zone.

o Pick up at end of school day Parents may pick up from either the main drop off zone or the short stay zone. Both are in the visitor car park area.

Walking and cycling Pupils living in close proximity to the school are encouraged to walk or cycle. Cyclists and pedestrians may access the school along Manor House Lane or via the main drive, which has a dedicated cycle path alongside the footpath. Secure cycle storage is available on site.

2

Public transport Public bus services stop on Harrogate Road, about a 15-minute walk from the school buildings: • 36 (Leeds-Harrogate-Ripon, every 15 minutes at peak times) Transdev • 48 (Leeds –Moortown-Wigton Lane, hourly) First Bus

School buses We operate 12 morning and afternoon services, together with 6 late services. The bus service has to be environmentally and financially sustainable so routes are designed to enable significant numbers of pupils to get to school safely and efficiently.

In addition, we offer free shuttle service(s) from: • Lane - the bus stop on The Avenue • Moortown Corner – the bus stop north of Marks & Spencer (near the roundabout with Scott Hall Road) • Slaid Hill – the bus stop at the Dexter on Wigton Lane

Due to the current restrictions, for the autumn term school bus services will only be available to senior school pupils and Year 3 to 6 pupils travelling with a sibling in senior school.

3

GSAL school bus services for the summer term 2021

Overview The daily buses arrive at school between 08:00 and 08:20 and depart school at 16:10. The late bus services depart at 17:50 to accommodate pupils taking part in after school activities but please note that the routes differ from the 16:10 services.

Due to the COVID-19 arrangements capacity on all of the vehicles will be reduced, therefore all journeys must be pre-booked for the full spring term. Bookings must be for return journeys and for a minimum of three days per week, and the booked journey must be the same for every week of the autumn term.

We advise pupils to arrive at their bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is due. Our school buses only pick up and drop off at recognised bus stops.

Electronic registration system The automatic registration system requires pupils to swipe their identity card/fob as they board and also give their name to the driver who will check they are registered on the list of pre-authorised users. Senior school pupils must use their student identity card to swipe on and off the bus and primary school pupils must use a bus fob. Fobs will be issued via their class teacher.

How to book and conditions of travel

1. Booking options For the spring term there are three pass options - 3 day, 4 day or 5 day return pass. You may not purchase single journey, ad hoc or annual passes. The minimum usage is three days a week for the same days every week, which must be specified at the time of booking. You may book for return travel only; regrettably, we cannot offer single journeys at this time.

2. Payment The shuttle services are free of charge. All other bus travel must be paid for once we have confirmed the allocation of your child’s seat. Please pay via sQuid no later than 15 December 2020, after this date we will reallocate seats that have not been paid for.

3. What happens next? The school transport department will produce passenger lists for each route. The driver will check passengers against the passenger list but pupils must also use their student identity card to swipe on and off the bus.

4. Boarding and alighting from the bus All pupils using the bus need to be at the correct stop at least 5 minutes before the vehicle is due. Pupils must wait at the bus stop and signal to the driver when they see the bus approaching. Pupils must swipe their card as they board the bus and again as they alight.

5. Lost cards and fobs It is the child’s responsibility to keep their card safe. If a card is misplaced or lost, a replacement can be requested from their year group administrator. Primary School pupils can request a replacement fob from their class teacher.

6. Lost property Any property found will be handed into pupil reception in the campanile in Senior School at the earliest opportunity but please allow 48 hours before making any enquiries.

7. COVID-19 Secure transport We are implementing additional health and safety measures in accordance with government guidance as follows: • Seating will be colour coded, including on the late buses and the free shuttle services • Pupils must sit in their colour coded seat, as directed by the driver • Pupils must sit facing forwards with their seatbelt fastened • Pupils must wear a face mask and use hand sanitiser when boarding • Anyone flouting these rules will lose their place without a refund • Late buses will leave school at the slightly later time of 17:50, allowing additional cleaning of touch points on board between journeys

35

8. Bus behaviour policy Pupils are expected to behave at all times with consideration for other people - their persons, their property and their feelings. Therefore, we require all pupils to comply with the following Code of Conduct:

o Boarding for the bus • Queue sensibly, away from the road observing social distancing. • Get on the bus calmly, without pushing, and sanitise hands on entry. • Senior School students must accompany siblings in Primary School. o On the bus • Not bring nuts or any nut products onto the buses. • Remember to scan their identity card/transport fob. • Find a seat and stay seated for the entire journey. • Fasten their seatbelt. • Give priority to members of staff, followed by Primary School and then younger pupils to take a seat on the bus. • Not distract the driver unless in an emergency. • Not damage the bus. • Always behave sensibly throughout their journey. • Use language that is civilised in tone and volume. • Leave no litter. • Never touch the emergency exit. • Stow their bag in the proper place and never leave their bag in the aisle. o Getting off the bus • Inform the driver when approaching their stop and wishing to disembark. • Remain seated until the vehicle stops and the doors open. • Wait until the bus has moved off and they can see the road clearly in both directions before crossing the road after they get off the bus. • Use a pedestrian crossing if available. • If accompanying primary school siblings, stay together at all times.

Pupils are expected to report anyone breaking this code of conduct to the transport office or the bus driver.

9. Terms and conditions of travel By purchasing a pass you are accepting the terms and conditions of travel. This includes sanctions which will be applied if the required standards of behaviour are not met. You should be aware that if your child causes any damage or does not meet the required standard of behaviour on the bus they could: • Have their identify card / transport fob withdrawn. • Be banned from using the bus and face other school sanctions. • Be required to pay for any damage they have caused. • Be prosecuted by the police.

10. Any queries… Please contact the school’s transport office if you need any further information on 0113 228 5147 or email [email protected].
