Introducing College 2010-11 Viewbook www.okanagan.bc.ca introducing okanagan college

Hi, my name is Arianne and I’m a second-year Business Administration student at Okanagan College. I’m here to walk you through our viewbook so you can get a student’s perspective of Okanagan College.

Before we get going let me tell you a little about my school. Okanagan College is a community college that offers more than 120 degree, diploma and certificate programs in business, university studies, health and social development, engineering technologies, continuing studies and trades.

This school has been around since 1963 and it has a long history of providing education in the Okanagan, Similkameen and Shuswap-Revelstoke regions.

After I finished high school I decided to go to Okanagan College because I’d heard really good things about the College and wanted to stay close to home. I also watched my older brother complete his business degree at the College and I could really see myself as an Okanagan College student.

I’m from , but lots of students come from all over to go to Okanagan College. It is a school with a solid reputation, great professors and is a great place to make new friends and have some fun…but not too much fun.

Anyways, let’s get started.

Quick Facts

Okanagan College:

• Is the largest community college in BC east of the Lower Mainland with 1000 employees serving more than 19,000 students.

• Serves the Shuswap-Revelstoke, North, Central, and South Okanagan-Similkameen regions with major campuses in , Vernon, Kelowna and and education centres in Revelstoke, Summerland and Oliver.

Page 2 www.okanagan.bc.ca mission statement

You might not believe me, but before I applied to the College, I actually read their mission, vision and values statement.

It’s right here on this page and I think it shows how committed the College is to supporting students and communities.

If you live outside of the Okanagan Valley I bet you didn’t know that the College has campuses in the Central Okanagan, South Okanagan, North Okanagan, Shuswap and even in Revelstoke. Each of these campuses are stunning in their own way. Whether they’re nestled in some of the best ski mountains in the world, or overlooking one of B.C.’s most beautiful, turquoise-blue lakes, students have the opportunity to study in spectacular locations. All of the campuses are in great college towns and are close to everything you’ll need while you are at school. Depending on where you live you can either walk, bike or take the bus to get to classes.

When choosing the college you want to attend it’s really important to find a school that fits who you are. I picked Okanagan College because it’s a school that focuses on teaching, learning and staying connected with the community. I’d like to use my business degree to start my own company one day and the College was the perfect choice for me because I want to develop close relationships with my professors and fellow students. The small class sizes and opportunities to participate in business competitions will really help me gain the experience I need. But you may be interested in pursuing a totally different educational path, so, I’ve put together my top 10 reasons for studying at Okanagan College. Check it out.

I know these next pages don’t look very exciting, but the information is important. The next three pages list every program the College offers. They also provide information about where the programs are offered and exactly how long every program takes to complete. It’s great to check all of these out because you might find the College offers programs you didn’t even know existed. It is also cool to be able to compare the different programs and find the one that will work best for you.

There has been a lot of new stuff going on at Okanagan College campuses this past year. In Kelowna, where I go to school, we just opened up our new $28 million Centre for Learning building and it’s pretty cool. It’s an extension of our library, with a common area for students, new classrooms, student meeting spaces, a Centre for Dialogue, offices for faculty and more. Did I mention it has some really cool environmentally responsible features? It will be a LEED Gold certified building (that is short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – basically, it’s on the cutting edge of green technology.

In Penticton we’re building the new Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation, which sounds really cool and is going to include new classrooms, an incubation centre, trades shops, a fitness centre and much more. The College is really moving forward with its commitment to sustainability and is aiming for this new $28 million building to meet high environmental standards. It should be ready for students in the winter of 2011 so if you are reading this viewbook and are still in high school, you might be among some of the first students to use the building.

In Salmon Arm we opened a new Aboriginal Gathering Space on campus. The completion of this space now means that every one of our campuses has designated space for Aboriginal learners to study, access resources and network. We also received $1 million this year as part of the Knowledge Infrastructure Program and are going to be expanding our trades training centre in Salmon Arm.

Page 12 www.okanagan.bc.ca engineering technology

If you like technology and are interested in working in high tech industries, these are great programs. All of these programs are two-year diplomas with co-operative education (co-op) options. Co-op gives you the opportunity to go to school for one or two semesters before taking your education out into the world to work for a semester in your field. You can make great contacts - that sometimes even lead to job opportunities – but more than that, you get to apply your knowledge and that’s where a lot of what you learn really takes off.

I got to know a lot about the College during my first year as a business student but occasionally I need some help figuring out all of the programs we offer. I am pretty interested in IT and someone who knows a lot about this field is Kevin Trotzuk. Kevin is a research analyst in the department of Institutional Research at Okanagan College. He graduated from the Bachelor of Computer Information Systems program in 2006.

Kevin collects, organizes and analyzes information at Okanagan College using a whole bunch of different tools, computer programs, queries, and databases. He is the guy who can tell you just about anything you need to know about the students who go to Okanagan College and the programs they enroll in. But Kevin’s career path is really just one of the options that exist for people with an education in Information Technology. Whether you plan on completing a diploma or degree, the CIS program prepares grads for the fast-paced world of IT.

This page has a lot of information for high school students. Did you know that the College, in partnership with School Districts, offers opportunities for high school students to take college programs before graduating? We call these programs dual credit because students get credit toward their high school graduation requirements, as well as college credit. The College offers dual credit programs at each of its campuses and in a variety of areas. It’s important to talk to your high school career counselor early if you are interested in dual credit options to make sure you start your school district application and plan your courses. Welcome to the Okanagan School of Business, a place I call home.

I’m enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program. What I like best about my program is that I was able to take business courses right away in my first year. I knew by the end of my first semester I was in the right program. The classes that are offered here can fulfill the core foundational business principles and practices but the Okanagan School of Business also offers unique, specialized classes that allow students to develop an expertise in emerging business fields like social entrepreneurship, tourism management and international trade. Dr. Heather Banham Associate Dean of Business We also have a ton of really cool support systems for students like our Entrepreneur-in- Residence program. Our professors focus their energy on teaching and mentoring students and many of them offer guidance to our business competition teams, who are among the best in the country, maybe even the world. There are so many opportunities for students.

Page 20 www.okanagan.bc.ca trades & apprenticeship programs

Did you know that Okanagan College is BC’s largest trades school outside of Vancouver? The College is known for its pre- apprenticeship or entry-level training programs. These programs provide trades training to students with little or no trades experience so they can complete their level one apprenticeship in a whole range of trades.

The demand for skilled trades people in Canada has never been greater. If you are interested in stable employment in a challenging and rewarding career, pursing a trade can get you there.

At Okanagan College you can also go straight into a level- one apprenticeship program, depending on your experience. An apprenticeship program is for someone who has already worked in the trade or has a knowledge base and some experience in the field.

They can come to the College to complete their level one and then they go back out to work in their field for a specific number of hours. Once those hours are complete and they’ve gained a lot of on-the-job experience, they come back to the College for level two. This process continues until they finish all of their apprenticeship training (usually four levels), then they can become certified after successfully completing the interprovincial exam.

Our Trades department also offers two diplomas. Advanced Culinary Arts is for students who want to combine cooking with business training. This is a great option for someone considering opening up their own business in a trade or for someone who wants to own or operate a business in the culinary industry.

The other trades diploma the College offers is the Trades Technology Teacher Education (TTTE) program. This program is for people who want to teach trades and technology classes to students in high school (what we used to call shop teachers). Students in TTTE do the first two years of their training at Okanagan College and then complete the final requirements at a university.

Page 23 foundational programs

At Okanagan College we get quite a few learners who have been out of high school for some time and then decide to go back. Most of these students enroll in foundational programs that help prepare them for entry into other programs. The most important thing to know about foundational programs is that they prepare you to go into college programs and they are tuition free – which means you don’t have to pay for the courses while you are upgrading.

Lots of students upgrade their math and English education through the Adult Academic and Career Preparation program and take other courses at the same time. If you have been out of school for a while, foundational programs are a great place to start.

One-to-one instruction, personal tutors, and an accessible and flexible learning environment characterize our Adult Academic and Career Preparation, English as a Second Language and Adult Special Education programs.

Adult Academic and Career Adult Special Education Preparation (formerly ABE) Adult Special Education provides courses and certificate programs for students Certificates are available for completion with special learning needs. ESL courses are offered in English Essentials, Grammar, Pronunciation, Reading, Speaking, and Writing.

Page 24 www.okanagan.bc.ca continuing studies & distance ed

Continuing Studies has some of the coolest certificates at the College. They range from bartending (something I might consider if I decide to go travelling) to teaching English as a Second Language (another great travelling credential). They also have all kinds of other stuff like audio engineering and music production, pharmacy technician and viticulture. Some of the courses are relatively quick and fun to complete and others can be pretty demanding because they prepare grads for really interesting careers. A number of CS courses are also offered through distance education, which can be a really good option for people who are already working or those who don’t live close to an Okanagan College campus.

Today, it is not unusual for a person to change careers a number of times over the course of their working life. In today’s fast-paced environment, most of us will need to upgrade, retrain, or prepare for new employment opportunities that didn’t even exist 10 years ago.

So if you only want to go to school for a short time, or if part-time learning works best for you, check out these certificates. You can get a lot more information on the CS website at www.okanagan.bc.ca/cs.

Page 25 library & services

This page lists some of the services offered by the College. There is even more than is listed here but these are the really important services that prospective students need to know about. In my opinion, some of the most helpful services for new students are: the Learning Centre, where students have access to free tutoring, the Library, which is available to students on every campus, and campus recreation. Okanagan College staff will assist you with everything from program planning, registration, orientation, and learning assistance to accommodation, employment opportunities, financial assistance, health issues, and recreation opportunities.

There is always a lot going on at every campus – we even have ice hockey and baseball teams in Kelowna for students who also excel on the ice and on the diamond.

Most students don’t realize the amount of help that’s out there when it comes to getting money to go back to school. I had good grades in high school but not the type that get you scholarships. So I was really happy to find out that once I got here and demonstrated I was a serious student, I could apply for an Okanagan College Tuition Bursary. A bursary is based on your need, not your grades. So if you are in good standing with the College and let them know you need financial aid they will try to help you.

There are also a lot of generous donors who contribute to scholarships for Okanagan College. Some of them are based on your academic standing and others are determined by a range of factors, like how active you are in your community in volunteerism. The best thing to do is to go online to check out the options out there, or connect with someone in the financial aid department.

International Education doesn’t just refer to the many students who come from around the world to study at the College. There are also a number of opportunities for Canadian students to study abroad. Right now the College has partnerships with more than 20 post-secondary institutions in countries like Australia, Austria, China, France, Finland, Germany, Japan, Spain, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the USA. So if you get the travel bug you don’t have to quit school to go, you just have to become a travelling student.

Each year, Okanagan College welcomes hundreds of international students from around the world into its programs. Our students share classes with students from more than 30 different countries and cultures. Okanagan College also offers its domestic and international students a variety of options for a global educational experience through international exchanges, internships, field schools and volunteer experiences.

Okanagan College currently has partnerships with post- secondary institutions around the world.

The development of an international perspective and the ability to communicate in more than one language are fundamental aspects of a modern education and increase future career opportunities.

Page 29 admission requirements

The next pages explain the college admission requirements. We kept this information simple and you should go online to www.okanagan.bc.ca/calendar for complete program information.

Sometimes students get really confused about whether or not they qualify for a specific program. The College, like most post-secondary schools, has what are called entrance requirements. These requirements tell you exactly what you need to get in.

It can get confusing if you have been out of high school for a while and you don’t know if your math or English grades were high enough to get you going. That’s why many adult students should do an AACP assessment.
