  • A Local's Guide to Papeete Visiting Tahiti? You Don't Have to Rush Off to the Outer Islands Too Quickly
A local's guide to Papeete Visiting Tahiti? You don't have to rush off to the outer islands too quickly. There is a lot of fun to be had on the main island of Papeete as well. If you can manage to be in Papeete for the Heiva festival in July, you're in for a real treat of festival excitement: dancing, cultural shows, sporting events, parades: it's party time in Tahiti for this national holiday. Everyone, local and visitor alike, also heads outdoors for the great annual canoe tournament. All shapes and sizes of canoe, from outriggers to pirogues, singles and doubles to huge 24 man vessels, compete in thrilling races for the crowds. If marine life is your thing, don't miss the Papeete aquarium, entered through a giant shark's mouth. There are also 200 year old turtles to visit not far out of town. Hotels, even if you aren't staying in them, are a hub of visitor activities. You can join day trips to go play with dolphins, feed sharks or feed sting rays. (You can even pet the rays, which will come right up and "kiss" you!) A range of water sports are available, such as water skiing or kite surfing, and hotel restaurants often offer an excellent meal at the end of the day, with evening entertainment such as fire dancing displays. For an authentic local experience and fantastic atmosphere make sure to check out "les roulottes", a kind of mobile food court, by the port, where stall holders open small trucks up to reveal kitchens producing a range of quality dishes.

  • Aviation in the Pacific International Aviation Services Are Crucial to Trade, Growth, and Development in the Pacific Region
Pacific Studies Series About Oceanic Voyages: Aviation in the Pacific International aviation services are crucial to trade, growth, and development in the Pacific region. Improved access provided by international aviation from every other region in the world to an increasing number of islands is opening new opportunities. Tourism contributes substantially to income and employment in many Pacific countries, usually in areas outside of the main urban centers, and enables air freight services for valuable but perishable commodities that would otherwise not be marketable. Although some features of the Pacific region make provision of international aviation services a challenge, there have also been some notable successes that offer key lessons for future development. Case studies of national aviation sector experience show the value of operating on commercial principles, attracting international and OCEANIC V private-sector capital investment, assigning risk where it can best be managed, and liberalizing market access. Integration of the regional market for transport services, combined with harmonized but less restrictive regulations, would facilitate a greater range of services at more competitive prices. Pacific island country governments have the ability to create effective operating environments. When they do so, experience O shows that operators will respond with efficient service provision. YAGES: About the Asian Development Bank Av ADB aims to improve the welfare of the people in the Asia and Pacific region, IATI particularly the nearly 1.9 billion who live on less than $2 a day. Despite many success stories, the region remains home to two thirds of the world’s poor. ADB is O N IN THE PACIFIC a multilateral development finance institution owned by 67 members, 48 from the region and 19 from other parts of the globe.

  • The Political, Security, and Climate Landscape in Oceania
The Political, Security, and Climate Landscape in Oceania Prepared for the US Department of Defense’s Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance May 2020 Written by: Jonah Bhide Grace Frazor Charlotte Gorman Claire Huitt Christopher Zimmer Under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Busby 2 Table of Contents Executive Summary 3 United States 8 Oceania 22 China 30 Australia 41 New Zealand 48 France 53 Japan 61 Policy Recommendations for US Government 66 3 Executive Summary Research Question The current strategic landscape in Oceania comprises a variety of complex and cross-cutting themes. The most salient of which is climate change and its impact on multilateral political networks, the security and resilience of governments, sustainable development, and geopolitical competition. These challenges pose both opportunities and threats to each regionally-invested government, including the United States — a power present in the region since the Second World War. This report sets out to answer the following questions: what are the current state of international affairs, complexities, risks, and potential opportunities regarding climate security issues and geostrategic competition in Oceania? And, what policy recommendations and approaches should the US government explore to improve its regional standing and secure its national interests? The report serves as a primer to explain and analyze the region’s state of affairs, and to discuss possible ways forward for the US government. Given that we conducted research from August 2019 through May 2020, the global health crisis caused by the novel coronavirus added additional challenges like cancelling fieldwork travel. However, the pandemic has factored into some of the analysis in this report to offer a first look at what new opportunities and perils the United States will face in this space.
