Why should a sinner...fear in life and in death to return to his God? … Those who look upon the Cross, no matter how sinful they are, will ind salvation and redemption. -St. Francis de Sales NO COMPARISONS

How many times have we read or heard about someone who’s gotten into trouble—maybe even ired from a job—because of a brush with the law? While our “Christian” minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.” And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else’s behavior as a way of relecting our own goodness. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

October 23, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 4 ARCHBISHOP CUPICH NAMED TO By Michelle Martin, Staff Writer, Catholic New World

Archbishop Cupich greeted the congregation at Holy Name Cathedral Oct. 9 with quips about the other news in town—the Chicago Marathon and the Cubs’ second playoff win—before acknowledging the news that he had been appointed to the College of Cardinals by .

Archbishop Cupich, who was appointed archbishop of Chicago on Sept. 20, 2014, said he was “deeply humbled” by the pope’s decision, which was announced earlier that day in Rome at noon, or shortly after 5 a.m. Central time. The new cardinals are to be invested on Nov. 19, the day before the close of the Jubilee of Mercy.

In a brief press conference following 11 a.m. Mass at the cathedral, the archbishop said he also is encouraged by his Archbishop Cupich speaks to the media in the courtyard appointment. Asked if the pope sent a message with his of Holy Name Cathedral following Mass at Holy Name appointment, Archbishop Cupich said he hard that question Cathedral on Oct. 9. He learned that morning that Pope Francis appointed him to the College of Cardinals. frequently when he was named archbishop. (Karen Callaway/Catholic New World)

“I responded that the pope was sending not a message but a pastor,” the archbishop said.

Now, he said, he hopes he and the other cardinals can help Pope Francis in his mission. The root of the word cardinal is the same root of “cardio,” meaning heart, and that demonstrates how close cardinals are to be to the Chair of Peter, Archbishop Cupich said.

Archbishop Cupich is one of 17 new cardinals named by Pope Francis. Thirteen are under age 80, meaning they are eligible to vote in the election of a new pope, and three hail from the United States. In addition to Archbishop Cupich, they are Archbishop Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis and Bishop Kevin Farrell, of the new Vatican ofice for laity, family and life. The others come from 10 other countries, including seven countries that do not now have any cardinals. For a full list, please visit www.catholicnewworld.com.

Announcing the names of the new cardinals, Pope Francis said, “Their coming from 11 nations expresses the universality of the church that proclaims and witnesses the good news of God’s mercy in every corner of the earth.” Archbishop Cupich said he is honored to be in their company.

As for changes in his daily life, the archbishop said the Archdiocese of Chicago remains his priority, “and I intend to keep my calendar as much as I can,” although duties as a member of the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops will place some demands on his time. Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Cupich to the congregation in July. The congregation’s main job is identifying and proposing candidates to become bishops in dioceses in the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

There had been much speculation that an appointment to the College of Cardinals was in the ofing for Archbishop Cupich, and members of the congregation at the Mass he celebrated Oct. 9 at the cathedral were happy for him, but not really surprised.

Andy Cwik, who regularly attends Mass at Holy Name, said, “I was surprised it was today, but in general, it was expected. The archbishop of Chicago has always been a cardinal.”

“I was wondering when it would happen,” said Don Michorczyk. “We’re back where we should be.”

But no diocese or archdiocese automatically has its ordinary elected to the College of Cardinals. Some archdioceses who have had cardinals at the helm in the past no longer do, and some that have not had cardinals in the past are seeing their archbishops don red hats, including Indianapolis. After the announcement, Archbishop Tobin tweeted that he was “shocked beyond words” by the news.

Asked when he learned the appointment had been made, Archbishop Cupich said he was awakened by phone call from a friend in Rome shortly after 5 a.m., on a day he’d been intending to sleep in until 7 a.m.

“I was glad to get the phone call, but I missed those two hours of sleep,” he said. “While I’m pleased with this, I don’t really feel any different. I feel like I’ll be the same person I’ve always been.”

He had spoken with many members of his family Sunday morning, he told reporters, and he could assume them that at least one thing had not changed.

“They still treat me with the same lack of deference they always have.”

REPORT OF SATURDAY-SUNDAY MASS ATTENDANCE FOR OCTOBER 2015—ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO

SUMMARY

Approximately 20% of Chicago Area Catholics in attendance at mass during 2015 October count

For the average weekend in October 2015 the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Chicago reported a total of 410,800 persons in attendance at 1,680 regularly scheduled masses plus other special weekend celebrations. In addition there were at least 12,050 persons in attendance on the average weekend at other reporting institutions in the Archdiocese. The parish and mission average for 2015 is less (-2.7% or –11,189) than the October 2014 average of 421,989. The combined parish, mission and institution actual count of 422,850 is 19.0% of the estimated 2,228,000 Catholic population of the Archdiocese.

PARISHES AND MISSIONS

The overall count at parishes and missions decreased by ~3% (almost 11,000 persons), but ~40% of the parishes/missions experienced an increase.

For parishes and missions reporting counts in both 2014 and 2015, 60.0% reported decreases. Among these 217 parishes and missions the average decrease was about 92 persons per parish/mission between 2014 and 2015 or a total of 20,047 persons. 39.1% of the parishes and missions responding in both years reported increases. For these parishes the average increase was 66 persons per parish/mission between 2014 and 2015 or a total of 9,342 persons. Three parishes reported the same average for both 2014 and 2015 (the weekly totals and individual mass counts differ between the years). The net result for all parishes and missions reporting in both years is an overall decrease of 11,189 persons or 2.7%.

OTHER CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS

48 non-parish institutions hold mass for ~12,000 persons

Many of the non-parish Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese, such as hospitals and religious communities, schedule regular weekend masses for staff and the special publics they serve. Since the October count project began in 1986 several hundred have been contacted. By 1990 it was found that just over one third have regularly, scheduled weekend services. Each year some new institutions are added to the list and some that no longer have services are asked if they have started again. For the October 2015 count, 82 institutions were asked to participate if regularly scheduled services were held. From the 82, 48 or 58.5% participated in the 2015 count.

The participating institutions report an average weekend attendance for October 2015 of 12,050 persons. There were 40 institutions that participated in both October 2014 and 2015. For October 2014 these 40 reported an average attendance of 11,773 persons. For October 2015 they report an attendance of 11,176, a decrease of 5.1%. For those reporting in both years, 16 report increases in attendance while 21 report decreases in the count for 2015, while three remained the same. Estimated attendance for the 34 institutions not participating suggests that around 5,280 persons were in attendance at these sites. Hence it is accurate to say that around 17,330 persons attended masses in non-parish/mission settings in the Archdiocese of Chicago during the average weekend of October 2015.

Hospitals serve ~400 mass-goers on average weekend in October, and aging care centers serve another ~1,700

Six of the 11 Catholic hospitals holding weekend services participated in the October count project for 2015. These 6 taken together had an attendance average of 415 for October 2015 or roughly 69 persons per institution. Four participated in both years and had their attendance increase from 143 in 2014 to 152 in 2015. Based on past responses it is accurate to say that around 700 persons attended masses in 11 Catholic hospital chapels

(continued)

October 23, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 7 during the average weekend of October 2015. Three other hospitals that had regularly scheduled weekend services report a combined total of 71 persons in attendance. Among 17 Catholic nursing, retirement and residential care homes that responded, there was a combined average of about 1,744 persons in attendance or about 103 persons per weekend per institution. Among the 14 institutions reporting in both years there was a decrease of –1.2% from 1,407 in 2014 to 1,390 in 2015.

Four campus ministry sites serve ~1,600 for mass

Four campus ministry sites participated in the project for 2015. A combined total of 1,586 were reported in attendance for the average weekend of October 2015.

Men and women religious communities have weekend services with count of ~700, while shrines/oratories count ~7,500

Four of the six communities of men religious reported their weekend services were attended by 40 to 191 persons at the sites. Four of the sites use languages not available in nearby parishes. (Three are retreat centers as well as houses of men religious.) The four reported a combined total of 323 persons in attendance for the average weekend of October 2015. One site not reporting, typically reports numbers over 3,000. Seven of the eight communities of women religious reported weekend services for a combined total of 350 persons in attendance per weekend. Nine non-parish shrines/oratories with regularly scheduled weekend services report a combined total average of 7,563 persons—with 82% of that total attending Maryville-O.L. Guadalupe Shrine. Airport ministries reported an average of 157 persons per weekend.

Gentle St. Francis, you were so devoted to the humanity of Christ. Your heart burst with appreciation toward God for taking on human life. You saw beauty and goodness in all living things - in birds that sing, the ish that ill our waters, and all that lives in nature. Help us to imitate your reverence for life wherever it may be. Especially, humble Francis of Assisi, help us to help others to see the worth of each living, unborn baby sheltered in its mother's womb. Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure? Have members of your family suffered from these ailments? Do you have a poor diet? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may want to consider being screened through the services of Life Line Screening.

Blockages in these arteries are a leading cause of stroke. We are pleased to host this Life Line Screening event on November 3, 2016 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All ive screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. EMMAUS HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY CELEBRATES 15TH YEAR OF MINISTRY AT ST. FRANCIS DE SALES

Did you know that St. Francis parishioners help to feed close to 175 people every Sunday night? In Father Valker Hall, a group called Emmaus House of Hospitality hosts a Community Dinner and perishable food pantry for those who are challenged with feeding themselves and their families. September 18 of this year marks the 15th anniversary of Emmaus House’s incorporation as a non-proit charity.

On June 4, 2000 Emmaus served twelve guests a hot, nutritious meal. Today we serve approximately 175 guests each week and approximately 7500 each year. Our perishable food pantry offers meat, dairy, produce, and other food rescued by volunteers from local retailers. This food is distributed on Sunday after the dinner so that in addition to a hot meal, guests leave with much needed groceries for the week.

For many years we relied on St. Francis parishioners to provide all the food for the Sunday dinners. You may remember sign-up tables in the Gathering Space. As the word spread in the community, Emmaus was approached by various groups looking for outreach opportunities. Community Dinners are now hosted by St. Francis Ministries and parish groups, civic groups, businesses, area churches and school organizations. Emmaus House volunteers coordinate these efforts and provide the leadership.

Emmaus also sponsors special programs for Community Dinner guests including: Jeepers Sneakers, which provides back to school shoes for children, Undie Sunday which distributes new underwear and socks in time for back to school, and the distribution of laundry detergent and paper products – all items that cannot be purchased with food stamps.

Another part of our work is preventing local homelessness. For example, in the past year, we have provided funding to pay rents, mortgages and utilities for people threatened with losing their homes. This funding gives people more time to get back on their feet inancially and to stay in their homes.

Poverty and homelessness still exist in SW Lake County but with God’s grace and the help of our dedicated volunteers ~ and that means you ~ , Emmaus will continue to make a difference in our community. Thank you to all who have volunteered in any way. You have helped Emmaus House serve “the least of our brothers.” This should make us all proud and humble as parishioners in the Lord’s work.

All of that being said, we have a challenge we hope that you will help us address: We need leaders who can help us continue to operate Emmaus House. People with administrative and organizational skills, with a passion to put those skills to work to help others. We have several openings on our Board of Directors and we need an infusion of new blood. It only takes a couple of hours a week but it can change the lives of people in need, and it will likely change your life too.

If you’d like to be part of a leadership team committed to the continuation of this important corporal work of mercy (feeding the hungry and helping the homeless), please stop by the table in the gathering space for information or email Brian Pozzi at [email protected]. Thank you!
