Cilic emerged with a career- defining win, but on Friday in Tokyo, he will have the hopes of a nation against him when he meets Nishikori once again. Nishikori is 6-3 in his FedEx Head 2 Head rivalry with Cilic and won their only other match since the 2014 US Open final, defeating the Croat in the 2015 Washington semi-finals. As if playing the World No. 6 in Tokyo isn’t tough enough, Cilic enters 0-8 against Top 10 opponents since his crowning moment on Arthur Ashe Stadium last summer. Also in quarter-final action on Friday is Frenchman Gilles Simon, who could end the week at No. 9 in the Emirates ATP Race to London if he wins the Tokyo title and John Isner does not reach the Beijing final. Though top seed Stan Wawrinka has already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, his match against Austin Krajicek on Friday is important as he tries to end the year ranked as high as No. 2. EMIRATES ATP RACE TO LONDON UPDATE: Champions in Tokyo and Beijing this week will receive 500 points in the Emirates ATP Race to London, and with a maximum of 3,000 points at stake over the four weeks that follow, anything can happen. The Top 8 players in the race on Nov. 9 will qualify for the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Nov. 15-22. Four players are already confirmed in singles: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.
