“Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* The Eagles In 1971, the arrival of The Eagles signaled a major shift in popular musical tastes in America. If Woodstock was the funeral for both the music and the culture of a decade of drugged out, hippie, free love and cultish idealism, the Seventies was the decade of blatant decadence, political cynicism, sexual distrust, and rampant narcissism. No band represented both the rejection of the Sixties and the celebration of the Seventies more than its crown princes, the Eagles. Songs like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone,” filled with spirited playing, close harmonies and an overlay of the Eagles’ war between the sexes, comprise four of the ten selections included in the initial compilation of Eagles’ hit songs from their first four albums, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).” Ironically, although the Eagles’ laid-back sound was bright and natural as Southern California sunshine, none of the original four members were Golden State natives (Don Henley, vocalist, lyricist, drummer, was from Texas, bred on bluegrass and country music; Glenn Frey, vocalist, lyricist, rhythm guitar, pianist, came from the streets of Detroit, influenced by the music of Motown and mentored by Bob Seger; Randy Meisner, on bass, was a veteran bar band night sider out of Nebraska; Bernie Leadon, guitar, mandolin, banjo, was a Minnesotan who loved and loved to play classic country). Each migrated separately to Los Angeles, like lemmings, to The Troubadour, the musical and cultural ground zero club on Santa Monica Boulevard, owned and operated by Doug Weston, who favored putting on his stage country-rock bands and female vocalists. -

Discurso preparado con motivo de la Conferencia del Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones sobre “Retos de la Competencia en el Mundo Digital” Ciudad de México, México 7 de noviembre de 2018 Buenos días. Gracias, Comisionada Estavillo, por la amable introducción. Es un honor estar aquí en la Ciudad de México, en el Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) para el Foro de retos de competencia en el entorno digital. Gracias por invitarme. También debo señalar que estoy encantado de estar en México esta semana en nombre de la delegación estadounidense para participar en las conversaciones trilaterales entre Canadá, México y los Estados Unidos. La cooperación en la ejecución de las leyes de la competencia en nuestros tres países es importante y hay bastante que podemos aprender unos de otros. La economía digital ha transformado las telecomunicaciones y otras industrias. Hemos sido testigos de la rápida innovación y la dinámica competencia, a medida que las tecnologías y las preferencias de los consumidores siguen evolucionando. Estos cambios tienen un impacto sobre la manera en que compiten las compañías, e incluso, abren nuevos mercados. Las autoridades designadas para proteger la competencia, a su vez, deben estar al día con las nuevas realidades del mercado. México ha hecho su parte, especialmente con sus reformas de competencia emblemáticas en 2013 y 2014. Estas reformas han abierto los mercados de telecomunicaciones a la competencia, con beneficios significativos para los consumidores y han creado este organismo, el Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones. -

L.A. meant palm trees and the Pacific Ocean, despotic directors and casting couches, a factory of illusion. L.A. was “the coast,” cut off by hundreds of miles of desert and mountain ranges. In those years Los Angeles wasn’t acknowl- edged as a musicCOPYRIGHTED town, despite producing MATERIAL some of the best jazz and rhythm and blues of the ’40s and ’50s. In 1960 the music business was still centered in New York, whose denizens regarded L.A. as kooky and provincial at best. Between the years 1960 and 1965 a remarkable shift occurred. The sound and image of Southern California began to take over, replacing Manhattan as the hub of American pop music. Producer Phil Spector took the hit-factory ethos of New York’s Brill Building 1 c01.qxd 3/29/06 11:47 AM Page 2 2 HOTEL CALIFORNIA songwriting stable to L.A. and blew up the teen-pop sound to epic proportions. Entranced by Spector, local suburban misfit Brian Wil- son wrote honeyed hymns to beach and car culture that reinvented the Golden State as a teenage paradise. Other L.A. producers followed suit. In 1965, singles recorded in Los Angeles occupied the No. 1 spot for an impressive twenty weeks, compared to just one for New York. On and around Sunset, west of old Hollywood before one reached the manicured pomp of Beverly Hills, clubs and coffee- houses began to proliferate. -

In their flight across a decade that they defined as authoritatively as any band, the Eagles mirrored the larger changes tak ing place in society They began as wide-eyed innocents with a country- rock pedigree and ended as purveyors of grandiose, dark-themed albums chronicling a world of excess and seduction that had begun spinning seriously out of control. A Hollywood scriptwriter couldn’t have plotted out the parallel history of a band and the decade they inhabited any better than this: The Eagles were born in 1971 and died in 1980. We all had the unique treat of experiencing the sounds and cultural impact of both the Beatles and all the artists of Soul music while in their prime. I still remember seeing The Four Tops and The Temptations perform in person at Skimmer Weekend. I was also lucky enough to be in the audience at The Ed Sullivan Show on the night that Paul McCartney introduced “Yesterday”. Our music, like the events of our time-- truly historic in every way.
