On behalf of the City of Jacksonville, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2008 Jacksonville Jazz Festival! This year's festival will showcase with unforgettable performances at The Florida Theatre and Metropolitan Park. Our city's enthusiasm for jazz and the arts is apparent with this year's fabulous lineup and activities.

The Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition will kick off the festival at The Florida Theatre on April 11 while performances from jazz greats take to the stage at Metropolitan Park on April 12-13. This year also marks the 20th anniversary celebration of the University of North Florida jazz program which will serve as one of the many highlights of the festival. Metropolitan Park also features the Art at the Met juried art show and sale, 38° Latitude wine tasting and a Sunday Jazz Brunch catered by Chef Matthew Medure.

Again, welcome to this year's Jacksonville Jazz Festival. I hope you and your family and friends have a wonderful time experiencing music and the arts in downtown and encourage you to revel in the cultural richness of our city. ACCOMPANIMENT The Rhythm Section Danny Gottlieb, a renowned drummer and educator, and Dennis Marks, an accomplished bassist and educator, will provide accompaniment for the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES Noel Freidline Noel Freidline, of Las Vegas, Nevada, is a graduate of the University of North Florida and is known as a talented pianist, vocalist, writer, arranger and bandleader of his namesake band, The Noel Freidline Quintet. Freidline has been named as Northeast Florida's Best Performer six times. He returns to Jacksonville as Master of Ceremonies for the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and will perform with the University of North Florida Jazz All Stars on Saturday, April 12 at Metropolitan Park.

Cassandra Wilson 's expansive career can be tracked through her discography. From the standards on Blue Skies to the Grammy­ winning , to the combination of originals and interpretations played by a collection of Mississippi and New York musicians on both the 2007 release, , and 2003'5 , Cassandra continues to evolve as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer. Cassandra Wilson is a world-renowned vocalist, songwriter and producer, with an extraordinary following, but at heart she is still a Mississippi girl whose art reflects her deep musical and cultural roots, anchored in the fertile Mississippi soil. Cassandra Wilson will perform on Saturday, April 12 at Metropolitan Park.

Terence Blanchard As Grammy award-winning musician and composer, latest release is an account of the pummeling of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. As a Crescent City native, his impassioned , A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina). is an emotional tour de force featuring Blanchard's quintet as well as a 40-member string orchestra. He has released two other critically acclaimed and was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2006. Terence Blanchard will perform on Saturday, April 12 at Metropolitan Park.

Lynne Arriale Lynne Arriale's 'singular voice' as a pianist, leader, composer, and arranger has been critically acclaimed for "putting the heart back into jazz" (London Times). Arriale's recordings have topped every notable jazz chart, including several #1 Jazz Week Radio hits and a #17 Billboard debut. Her PBS and NPR programs, Profile of a Performing Artist, and consistently excellent recordings have captured jazz and mainstream audiences alike. Arriale won Jacksonville's 1993 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and has sold-out numerous venues including The Kennedy and Lincoln Centers. Her newest release, LIVE (Motema), received the 2007 German Critics Award for Best Jazz CD/DVD. Arriale is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano and Director of the Jazz Combo Program at UNF. The Lynne Arriale Trio, featuring jazz icon and tenor sax soloist, Benny Golson, will perform on Saturday, April 12, at Metropolitan Park.

Rufus Reid Rufus Reid's extensive jazz background and discography reads literally like the Who's Who in jazz. He has traveled, performed and recorded with many of the great Jazz Masters and continues performing and recording in collaboration with other award-winning musicians as well as his own group, The Rufus Reid Quintet. His career as a performer, educator, composer and author has been recognized with the following honors and awards: 1997 Humanitarian Award by the The International Association of Jazz Educators, the 1998 Jazz Educator Achievement Award by Bass Player Magazine, Outstanding Educator of 1999 by The New Jersey Chapter of the IAJE and The Distinguished Achievement Award, in 2007 by The International Society of Bassists. Rufus Reid will perform with the Lynne Arriale Trio on Saturday, April 12 at Metropolitan Park. THE FINALISTS Robert Botos Born into a musical Romani (Gypsy) family in Hungary, self-taught pianist Robi Botos' notable performances include the opening concert for Bela Fleck, Stanley Clark, and Jean Luc Ponty at the 2005 Toronto Jazz Festival. Since immigrating to Canada in 1998, his most recent honors have included the 2007 NOW award for Best Jazz Artist, the 2007 National Jazz Award for "keyboardist of the year" along with a nomination for the same award in 2006. Robert Botos was also finalist in the 2007 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Jazz Competition. JD Daniel J D Daniel began his professional career in Tucson, Arizona, where as an upcoming bandleader, his ensembles included Diane Schuur and Brian Bromberg. For more than 30 years, J D has recorded and performed with a variety of jazz artists including Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Ronnie Laws, among others. J Dis currently writing and recording his latest CD, Back In The Groove. Bennett E. Paster Keyboardist, composer and producer Bennett Paster attended Tufts University and New England Conservatory of Music, and received degrees in English and Jazz Studies. Committed to furthering his career and his love for Afro-Cuban music and latin jazz. The sophomore recording by his jazz piano trio, Paster, Ryan & Hall was entitled Invisible Horizon in 2006. Bennett Paster was also a finalist in four Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competitions. Bill Peterson Bill Peterson is an Associate Professor of jazz piano at Florida State University. He received the B.M. degree from the Cincinnati College­ Conservatory and the Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music. He has performed with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, among others and has written big band arrangements for David Leibman, Richie Beirach and Barry Harris. Peterson was also a Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition finalist in 1992 and 1999. Dave Stoler Da ve Stoler received a Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami-Coral Gables. He currently works with his own jazz trio, The Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Sextet and the Madison Jazz Orchestra. He was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Piano Competition and the American Jazz Piano Competitio n. His second CD, Have you b e en to the Forest?will be released this summer. 38° LATITUDE: A WINE TASTING EXPERIENCE Located at the River Overlook near Art at the Met

Returning to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival is a tasteful complement to the displays of fine art and the sounds of jazz at Metropolitan Park.

TASTING TIMES Saturday, April 12 Noon - 9:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Wine store hours will mirror the tasting hours each day.

TASTING TICKETS $15 Purchase a tasting ticket for $15 at the point of entry to this special region and receive a souvenir wine glass and eight samplings of featured wines. An additional five tastes may be purchased for $10. Knowledgeable wine representatives will also be available to discuss various vintages.

Aptly titled Jazz at Night, Sergio explains, "my principle motivation for this piece was my love for music and it is the inspiration for all my paintings. The commemorative poster is available for purchase for $25 signed and numbered by the artist and $75 unsigned, while supplies last. After the festival, posters will cost $50 (signed and numbered) and $25 unsigned.

The Jacksonville Jazz Hall of Fame serves to recognize those in the community who have made significant contributions to jazz in Jacksonville.

DR. BILL PRINCE, 2008 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Dr. Bill Prince is a professor emeritus of music at the University of North Florida and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a major in Theory and Composition from the University of Miami. He has taught at many universities and served as a visiting lecturer at colleges in South Africa. His compositions and arrangements have been performed and/or recorded by jazz ensembles throughout the United States and Canada. Music has taken him to all 50 states and approximately 75 countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and Asia.

One of Bill's most unique talents is his ability to perform professionally on several instruments including trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, and electric bass. He also produced his own CD, Happy Thoughts, on which he composed, arranged and performed all parts. In 2008, Dr. Bill Prince was inducted into the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame for contribution to jazz education, his legacy as a performer and support of jazz in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame will be on display during the festival at the Main Library at 303 North in downtown Jacksonville. Dr. Bill Prince will join the following Jazz Festival pioneers, city leaders, musicians, educators and patrons of the arts.
